Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN RICHARD WHITMORE REMEMBERED

Emily left the office before Daniel could stop her.

She didn't run away. She simply needed air, distance, and a moment in which she wasn't someone's wife, someone's target, or the possible key to a fortune.

Daniel found her outside, standing beneath the awning as rain began to fall.

"Please talk to me."

She looked at him.

"I love you. That's why this hurts."

He nodded, accepting the truth without defending himself.

"I love you too. I don't know what Dad knew, but I know why I married you."

"Then tell me."

"Because you were the first person who challenged me without wanting something from me. Because you remembered the names of the people who cleaned my office. Because you told me I was being cruel when I canceled a family dinner just because I was angry with my sister."

Emily's eyes filled.

"And because you made me laugh when I thought I'd forgotten how."

She looked away.

"I believe you. But I need to know the rest."

Daniel promised there would be no more secrets between them.

They returned to Evelyn's office and asked her to investigate Emily's family history.

Emily had grown up believing her father died before she was born. Her mother, who had passed away when Emily was twenty, had worked as a nurse and rarely discussed her past.

That afternoon, Evelyn found an old employment record.

Emily's mother had worked at a private medical clinic funded by Richard Whitmore.

A second record showed that she'd received financial assistance after leaving the clinic.

The payments stopped shortly before Richard's death.

"Why would your father help my mother?" Emily asked.

Evelyn searched deeper.

A letter finally surfaced from an archived file.

Richard had written it to Emily's mother, Margaret Ellis, twenty-six years earlier.

You saved my daughter's life. I can never repay what you did, but I will make certain your child has opportunities you never had.

Emily stared at the page.

"My mother saved Rebecca?"

Evelyn nodded.

"According to these records, Rebecca was seriously ill as a child. Your mother was one of the nurses who helped care for her."

Daniel took Emily's hand.

"That doesn't mean Dad arranged our marriage."

"No," Evelyn agreed. "But he may have known your family long before you met."

The next discovery came from Clara.

She remembered Emily's mother visiting the mansion once, years before Emily met Daniel. She'd brought a small wooden box to Richard and asked him to keep it safe.

Richard had hidden it in the private study.

Marcus located the box behind a false panel in the old library.

Inside lay a hospital bracelet, a photograph of two little girls, and a sealed envelope addressed to Emily.

The photograph showed Rebecca as a child beside another girl.

The second girl was unmistakably Emily.

Emily's breath caught.

She'd never seen the picture before.

The letter explained that the girls had spent several months together during Rebecca's recovery. Emily's mother had helped them become friends, and Richard had arranged for the families to stay in contact.

But the final paragraph changed everything.

Emily, if you ever read this, it means I failed to bring Rebecca home safely. Your mother made me promise that neither child would be used as leverage against the other. If you and Daniel ever find each other, let your relationship be your own. Never allow the trust to become the reason you stay together.

Emily lowered the letter.

Her father-in-law had known her family.

He'd even hoped she and Daniel might meet.

But he had explicitly warned against using their relationship for financial gain.

Daniel's eyes shone with anger and grief.

"Mom turned Dad's wish into a weapon."

Before Emily could answer, Marcus entered carrying his phone.

"Sir, Thomas has released the recording."

A video was already spreading across business news sites.

Richard Whitmore appeared on screen, admitting that money had been moved out of company accounts shortly before his death.

The clip ended before he explained why.

The headline beneath it read:

WHITMORE BILLIONAIRE'S FATHER CONFESSED TO FINANCIAL FRAUD—SON FACES INVESTIGATION.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then another alert appeared.

The board had called an emergency meeting.

And Margaret had already been named interim chair.
