Chapter 5 - THE MAN AT THE FUNERAL

The man in the photograph was unmistakable.

He'd been seated beside Margaret during the dinner, quietly observing Emily while everyone else laughed at her humiliation.

Daniel remembered him leaving before the confrontation escalated.

"Who was he?" Emily asked.

"Margaret introduced him as a family friend," Daniel replied. "Someone who'd known my father for years."

Clara stared at the screen.

"That's Thomas Reed."

The discovery changed everything.

Thomas hadn't died. He'd changed his identity and remained close to Margaret.

Daniel contacted his company's chief security officer and requested a full background investigation. Meanwhile, Evelyn began preparing an emergency motion to prevent any transfer of trust assets.

By noon, the first results arrived.

Thomas had been operating under the name Thomas Mercer. He'd served as an adviser to Northbridge Holdings for more than a decade.

The company controlled several properties, private investments, and a significant portion of Whitmore Industries' voting shares.

Daniel's mother wasn't merely protecting the family fortune.

She was working with the man who had helped manage it.

That evening, Daniel and Emily returned to the mansion with Marcus and a court-appointed observer. Margaret greeted them in the entrance hall, dressed elegantly in cream silk.

"I knew you'd come to your senses," she said.

Daniel didn't remove his coat.

"We're here for the original trust records."

Margaret smiled.

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Mrs. Whitmore, we've obtained a court order requiring the preservation of all documents connected to the trust and Northbridge Holdings."

For the first time, Margaret looked genuinely frightened.

Then Thomas appeared at the top of the staircase.

"Daniel," he said smoothly. "Your father would be ashamed to see you dragging legal disputes into his home."

Daniel looked up.

"You're supposed to be dead."

Thomas's smile vanished.

Clara stepped into view behind Emily.

"You should have stayed gone."

Thomas stared at her.

"Clara. Still meddling in matters beyond your station?"

"Someone had to protect the people you tried to destroy."

Thomas descended the stairs.

"You don't understand what Richard wanted."

"Then explain it," Daniel demanded.

Thomas adjusted his cuffs.

"Your father was preparing to transfer control of the company to a charitable trust. He believed the Whitmore fortune had become too powerful in private hands."

Daniel frowned.

"Why would that require hiding my sister?"

"Because Rebecca was the intended trustee."

The revelation struck Daniel like a physical blow.

His father hadn't simply hidden a daughter.

He'd intended to entrust her with the family's future.

Margaret's composure cracked.

"Rebecca was unstable. She couldn't be trusted with that responsibility."

"Was she?" Emily asked quietly. "Or was she simply someone you couldn't control?"

Margaret turned on her.

"You have no idea what happened!"

"Then tell us."

For several seconds, Margaret looked ready to speak.

Instead, she slapped the papers from Evelyn's hands.

"Get out of my house!"

The court-appointed observer intervened, warning Margaret that obstructing the order could have serious legal consequences.

Thomas seized the moment.

He slipped through a side door.

Marcus ran after him.

Daniel started to follow, but Emily caught his hand.

"Let Marcus handle it."

He looked at her, then nodded.

They waited in the hall as footsteps thundered through the service corridor.

A minute later, Marcus returned alone.

"He escaped through the garage."

Daniel swore under his breath.

Marcus held up a small object.

"But he dropped this."

It was a silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon.

Clara gasped.

"Rebecca's."

Daniel turned it over.

A tiny inscription had been engraved on the back.

TO MY DAUGHTER, WHO DESERVES THE TRUTH.

Underneath were coordinates and a date.

Evelyn checked them on her phone.

The location was a cemetery in upstate New York.

The date was tomorrow.

Daniel looked at Emily.

"Someone wants us there."

She squeezed his hand.

"Then we'll go together."

But when they reached the cemetery the next morning, they discovered that the grave marked with Rebecca's name was empty.

And a fresh note had been placed on the stone.
