Chapter 6 - The Lions' Den

The grand press room at the New York Athletic Club was packed to the gills with over a hundred journalists, television camera crews, and society columnists.

The air was thick with the scent of hot electrical cables, cheap cologne, and predatory anticipation.

At the front of the room, sitting smugly in the front row of the gallery, was Richard Sterling himself.

He was sixty, barrel-chested, with cold blue eyes and a face that looked like it had been carved out of wet cement.

Beside him sat Victoria, wearing dark sunglasses and dabbing dry eyes with a linen handkerchief, playing the heartbroken victim for the cameras.

When the side doors opened, the entire room erupted into an explosion of camera flashes that sounded like popping popcorn.

Alexander walked through the threshold, commanding the room with his towering six-foot-two frame and tailored charcoal suit.

On his arm, walking with the regal, measured glide of a prima ballerina, was me.

A collective murmur rippled through the press corps.

Reporters scrambled to their feet, their microphones thrusting forward like spears.

"Mr. Blake! Did you publicly abandon Miss Sterling for a hotel maid?"

"Is this an elaborate publicity stunt for your upcoming IPO?"

"Miss, what is your legal name? Are you an undocumented worker?"

Alexander raised a single hand at the central podium, and the chaotic room instantly dropped to an eerie hush.

"Thank you all for coming," Alexander began, his baritone voice smooth, resonant, and entirely unbothered.

"There have been numerous fabricated rumors circulating in the press regarding the events of last night's gala."

He turned slightly, extending his hand toward me with open, genuine pride.

"I would like to introduce you all to my fiancée. Her name is Lena Rostova."

The name landed in the room like a grenade.

Two veteran culture critics from The New York Times dropped their notebooks onto the carpet.

Richard Sterling’s cold sneer froze instantly on his face.

"Rostova?" a senior journalist shouted from the third row.

"As in the daughter of Elena Rostova, the legendary defector who vanished from the Lincoln Center stage in 1998?"

"The very same," Alexander confirmed, stepping aside to let me take the center microphone.

I leaned forward, my hazel eyes locking directly onto Richard Sterling's pale, horrified face in the front row.

"Fourteen years ago, my mother passed away," I spoke clearly, my voice carrying to every corner of the room.

"Following her death, Apex Capital—a predatory subsidiary owned exclusively by Mr. Richard Sterling—unlawfully seized our family studio through manipulated interest rates and fraudulent lien filings."

Gasps echoed through the journalists as cameras swung violently from me to Sterling.

"For six years, Mr. Sterling used third-party service agencies to garnish eighty percent of my income, forcing me into cleaning contracts while he sat on our board," I continued, unrolling a set of certified audit documents Thomas had secured that morning.

"These records prove systematic financial extortion, wage theft, and illegal corporate espionage."

Sterling surged to his feet, his face turning an apocalyptic shade of purple.

"This is slander! Turn off those cameras! This woman is an extortionist!"

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium banged open.

Four uniformed federal marshals and two agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission walked down the center aisle, their badges gleaming under the television lights.

"Richard Sterling?" the lead federal agent announced, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.

"You are under arrest for federal securities fraud, grand larceny, and corporate racketeering. Step out into the aisle, please."

Victoria shrieked, dropping her sunglasses as reporters surged forward to capture the downfall of Manhattan’s most ruthless tycoon.

I stepped back from the podium, feeling Alexander’s arm wrap securely around my waist.

He leaned close, his breath warm against my ear amidst the chaos.

May you like

"Brava, Miss Rostova," he whispered, a brilliant, genuine smile lighting up his face.

"You just brought the entire house down."
