Chapter 3 - The Midnight Contract

I stepped backward, crossing my arms over my chest, refusing to touch his outstretched hand.
"I don't need your charity, Mr. Blake. And I certainly don't need a fake marriage to satisfy your bored ego."
Alexander’s eyebrows furrowed in genuine confusion.
To him, women spent years plotting, scheming, and compromising their morals just to earn a single glance from his table.
Here I was, standing in a twenty-dollar cleaning uniform, rejecting the most powerful bachelor in New York without blinking.
"It isn't charity," Alexander said, taking another step forward as his personal bodyguards formed a tight perimeter around us to block the flashing paparazzi cameras.
"And it isn't an ego trip. You just embarrassed Victoria Sterling in front of every major media outlet in the city. By tomorrow morning, her father will use every ounce of his political capital to destroy you."
My heart gave a faint, nervous flutter, but I kept my face impassive.
"I've survived on the streets since I was fourteen, Mr. Blake. A spoiled billionaire and his daughter don't scare me."
"Sterling doesn't just play dirty, Lena; he owns judges, housing authorities, and hospital boards," Alexander countered, his voice dropping into a low, urgent murmur.
"If you walk out that service door alone tonight, you won't have an apartment by Friday. You won't have a bank account by Monday."
"And what do you offer?" I challenged, my hazel eyes flashing with defiance.
"A gilded cage where you can show off your dancing maid to your rich friends?"
Alexander paused, studying me closely as the murmurs of the ballroom continued to swirl behind his security detail.
"I offer protection, legal immunity, and access," he said smoothly.
"And I offer the one thing money usually can't buy: a clean slate."
His head of security, a towering man with gray hair named Thomas, parted the crowd, clearing a path toward the private VIP elevators.
"The press is swarming the front entrance, Boss," Thomas reported quietly.
"We need to move now."
Alexander didn't wait for my agreement.
He gently but firmly placed his palm against the small of my back, guiding me past the shocked gala guests into the quiet, mahogany-paneled elevator car.
The heavy brass doors slid shut with a soft chime, sealing out the noise of high society.
The elevator climbed smoothly toward the hotel’s penthouse suite sixty floors above Fifth Avenue.
I stood against the mirrored wall, looking at our reflections side by side: a billionaire in a ruined tuxedo, and a cleaning woman with hair escaping her pins.
"Why did you do that?" I asked, staring at the floor indicator lights ticking upward.
"You didn't care about my dancing. You just wanted to get rid of Victoria."
Alexander leaned back against the brass handrail, letting out a dry, self-deprecating chuckle.
"Victoria's father has been attempting a hostile takeover of my shipping logistics firm for six months. He used Victoria to infiltrate my private life and monitor my meetings."
He looked directly into my eyes, and for the first time, I saw exhaustion behind his sharp intellect.
"I needed a public, irrevocable reason to sever ties with the Sterlings tonight without giving their board legal grounds to sue for breach of partnership."
"So you used me as a weapon," I said, a bitter taste rising in my mouth.
"I used an opportunity," Alexander corrected calmly as the elevator doors chimed open into a palatial, glass-walled penthouse overlooking Central Park.
"And now I am offering you a business contract. You play my eccentric, fiercely talented fiancée for ninety days. In exchange, I will deposit two million dollars into a private trust and pay off every debt your family ever accrued."

He walked over to a wet bar, poured two glasses of sparkling mineral water, and set one on the marble counter before me.
"Do we have a deal, Miss Lena?"
