Chapter 8 - THE FIREBella did not scream.

She backed away from the door and reached for the emergency phone Adriano had insisted she keep.

No signal.

Jammed.

Smoke thickened.

Paolo knocked again.

"Open the door."

Bella looked toward the balcony.

Thirty floors.

No escape.

Then she remembered something Lucia had said.

Powerful men built homes with obvious exits.

Frightened women learned the hidden ones.

Bella went to the laundry room.

The building had a service corridor behind the utility wall for maintenance access.

She pulled open the narrow panel.

Behind it was darkness.

The front lock began to move.

Bella squeezed inside.

At seven months pregnant, there was barely room.

She crawled.

Metal scraped her knees.

Behind her, the apartment door opened.

"Mrs. Valente?"

Paolo's voice.

Closer.

Bella kept moving.

Her daughter kicked hard.

"Not tonight," Bella whispered.

She reached a service ladder.

Down one floor.

Then another.

Her lungs burned.

At the twenty-eighth floor, she kicked open an access panel and rolled into an empty apartment.

A window shattered somewhere above.

She found a landline.

911 answered.

Bella gave the address.

Then one more number.

Adriano picked up before the first ring finished.

"Bella?"

"He's here."

Silence.

"Paolo?"

"Yes."

"Where are you?"

"Twenty-eighth floor. Empty unit."

"I'm coming."

"No."

"Bella—"

"Police first."

He stopped.

She could hear him breathing.

"Police are already coming."

"Good."

"Stay where you are."

"I intend to."

"I love you."

Bella closed her eyes.

"I know."

It wasn't the answer he wanted.

But it was true.

Seven minutes later, police flooded the building.

Adriano arrived behind them.

He did not storm inside.

He did not pull rank.

He stood behind the barricade and waited.

It nearly killed him.

Firefighters contained a small deliberately set fire outside Bella's apartment.

Officers searched floor by floor.

Paolo was gone.

Again.

Then a detective found something.

Blood on the service stairwell.

Security footage showed Paolo escaping toward the basement after cutting his hand on broken glass.

His face was visible.

For the first time, authorities had current proof placing him at an attempted attack.

A citywide manhunt began.

Bella emerged at 3:11 a.m.

Adriano saw her.

He took one step.

Stopped.

Bella crossed the distance herself.

She wrapped her arms around him.

His body shook.

"I followed your rules," he whispered against her hair.

She almost laughed.

"Congratulations."

"I hated every second."

"I know."

"I wanted to tear the building apart."

"I know."

"I still do."

Bella pulled back.

"But you didn't."

"No."

She touched his face.

"That's the point."

He kissed her.

Not dramatically.

Not possessively.

Just once.

Softly.

Then he rested his forehead against hers.

Police found Paolo six hours later.

He had entered a private marina using a false name.

Marco recognized the marina from one of Vittorio's old ledgers.

Officers surrounded the dock.

Paolo tried to flee by boat.

He was arrested before sunrise.

Adriano did not go.

That surprised everyone.

Instead, he sat beside Bella at the hospital while doctors checked the baby.

"Strong heartbeat," the obstetrician said.

Bella exhaled.

Adriano closed his eyes.

Their daughter was fine.

Afterward, a detective arrived.

"Paolo wants to speak to Mr. Valente."

"No," Bella said.

Adriano looked at her.

She raised an eyebrow.

"Your decision."

He considered.

Then shook his head.

"Tell him he can speak to his attorney."

The detective left.

Adriano stared at the floor.

"I've imagined confronting the man who killed my father for nine years without knowing his name."

"And now?"

"I don't want him to own another hour."

Bella squeezed his hand.

That afternoon, Lucia arrived.

Behind her came Marco.

Behind Marco came Bianca, escorted by federal investigators.

The strange group gathered around Bella's hospital bed.

Lucia looked at all of them.

"This family needs therapy."

Nobody spoke.

Then Marco laughed.

Bianca followed.

Bella laughed next.

Finally Adriano did too.

Lucia remained serious.

"I wasn't joking."

That made it worse.

For the first time in years, the Valentes laughed together without anyone pretending everything was fine.

Because everything was not fine.

Vittorio was still dead.

Trust had been broken.

Bella still lived separately.

Adriano still had a lifetime of instincts to unlearn.

But Paolo was in custody.

Lucia was free.

Their daughter was alive.

And the truth had finally entered a family that had survived for decades by hiding it.

That evening Adriano drove Bella back to another temporary apartment.

At the door, she turned.

"You can come inside."

He stared at her.

"For coffee."

"Coffee."

"Don't make it weird."

"I wasn't."

"You were."

He followed her inside.

They sat at a tiny kitchen table until midnight.

They spoke about things that had nothing to do with crime.

Baby names.

Paint colors.

The ridiculous stroller Adriano had ordered from Italy.

Bella hated it.

Adriano defended it like national territory.

Then Bella asked quietly, "Why did you marry me?"

He looked surprised.

"Because you were the first person who told me no and then stayed long enough to explain why."

Bella smiled sadly.

"And somewhere along the way, you stopped liking the no."

"Yes."

He reached across the table.

"I want to learn again."

Bella placed her hand in his.

"Then learn."

He kissed her fingers.

At 12:17, he stood to leave without being asked.

Bella watched him reach the door.

"Adriano."

He turned.

"Tomorrow night."

"What?"

"Dinner."

His expression changed.

"Here?"

"Here."

"Family dinner?"

Bella smiled.

May you like

"Just us."

For once, Don Adriano Valente looked like a man who had been handed the world.
