Chapter 5 - THIRTY WEEKSThe doctor said the words Adriano had feared since the second Bella doubled over.

"Possible placental abruption."
The hospital corridor seemed to narrow.
"Is my daughter alive?"
"Yes."
"My wife?"
"Stable right now."
Right now.
Adriano hated those words.
They meant the future had refused to make a promise.
Bella was thirty weeks pregnant. Too early for birth, but far enough that the neonatal team had hope if delivery became necessary.
Adriano stood outside the treatment room with blood on his shirt where Bella had clutched him.
Lucia sat nearby.
Neither spoke.
Finally she said, "Sit down."
"No."
"Adriano."
"No."
His mother looked at him.
"You think standing makes you more useful?"
His jaw tightened.
"Don't."
"Don't what?"
"Analyze me tonight."
Lucia nodded.
For once, she obeyed.
The door opened.
A nurse approached.
"Mrs. Valente is asking for you."
Adriano entered.
Bella lay beneath a white blanket, monitors surrounding her. She looked small in the hospital bed.
He stopped beside the door.
She noticed.
"You can come closer."
He did.
"Baby's heartbeat is strong," Bella said.
He nodded.
"They're trying to stop the contractions."
Another nod.
"Adriano."
He looked at her.
"You can speak."
His voice broke on the first attempt.
"I nearly lost you."
Bella's anger could not survive the naked fear on his face.
But forgiveness was different from compassion.
She reached for his hand.
He took hers.
"Listen to me," she said. "If something happens—"
"No."
Her eyes sharpened.
"Do not do that."
He went silent.
"If something happens, you listen to the doctors. You don't threaten anyone. You don't turn the hospital upside down. And you do not make decisions about my body because you're afraid."
He flinched.
Even here, they were talking about Lucia.
About themselves.
About everything.
"I understand."
"Do you?"
This time he answered.
"I treated fear like authority."
Bella watched him.
He continued.
"My father died when I wasn't there. I decided afterward that nothing would ever happen to someone I loved without me being prepared. Then preparation became control."
His thumb moved across her knuckles.
"I did it to Mama. And I've been doing it to you."
Bella's eyes filled.
He did not ask for forgiveness.
That mattered.
"I made your pregnancy an argument against you."
"Yes."
"I trusted Bianca's certainty because it sounded like mine."
"Yes."
"I let you stand in our house feeling like the least credible person in the room."
Bella looked away.
That one hurt.
Adriano swallowed.
"I'm sorry."
A monitor continued its steady rhythm.
Bella finally said, "I don't need a husband who never makes mistakes."
He looked at her.
"I need one who doesn't require me to disappear before he hears me."
His eyes closed.
"I know."
Outside, Tomas received a call.
Marco and Bianca had reached a secure Valente property.
Paolo had disappeared.
That should have been the night's worst news.
It wasn't.
At 2:31 a.m., an accountant named Elias Moretti opened Vittorio's files and discovered that Paolo had transferred nearly forty million dollars over nine years.
But the money was secondary.
Buried inside an encrypted folder was a schedule.
Hospital appointments.
Lucia's.
Bella's.
Even the name of Bella's obstetrician.
Paolo had been tracking them.
Tomas entered Bella's room.
Adriano saw his face.
"What?"
"We have a problem."
Bella listened as Tomas explained.
Adriano's expression became lethal.
"Move her."
The words came automatically.
Bella's hand withdrew from his.
Adriano stopped.
Three hours ago, he would have issued twenty orders.
Instead he looked at her.
"What do you want?"
Bella studied him.
Then she answered.
"I want the hospital security director involved. I want my doctor to decide whether moving me is medically safe. And I want federal authorities contacted if Vittorio's evidence shows crimes outside your organization."
Tomas looked surprised.
Adriano did not.
"Do it."
No argument.
Bella's fingers found his again.
It wasn't forgiveness.
But it was something.
By dawn, the contractions had slowed.
The bleeding stopped.
The baby remained inside.
Adriano finally slept in a chair beside Bella's bed, his large hand resting loosely near hers without touching it.
When Bella woke, she watched him.
This man had terrified cities.
Yet sleep had stripped the Don from his face.
He simply looked tired.
Human.
Vulnerable.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Bianca.
I'm downstairs. I have something you need to see.
Bella stared at it.
Then at Adriano.
She carefully withdrew her hand and called Tomas.
Ten minutes later, Bianca entered.
She looked nothing like the immaculate woman in cream from the previous night.
Her hair was tied back. There was a bruise near her temple.
Bella gestured toward the chair.
Bianca remained standing.
"I won't stay."
"What do you have?"
Bianca placed her phone on the blanket.
An audio file.
"My father recorded this seventeen years ago."
Bella pressed play.
Carlo Riccai's voice filled the room.
Another man answered.
Paolo.
They discussed accounts, shipments, Vittorio.
Then Carlo said something that made Bella's blood turn cold.
If Vittorio finds out, Marco takes the blame.
Paolo laughed.
And Adriano?
Carlo answered.
Adriano will believe whatever makes him angriest. Men like him always do.
The recording ended.
Adriano was awake.
He had heard everything.
Bianca looked at him.
"My father understood your weakness before you did."
Adriano said nothing.
Bianca's eyes moved to Bella.
"So did Paolo."
Bella frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Bianca unlocked another message.
"Paolo didn't need Adriano to put Lucia in Villa Serena."
She turned the screen toward them.
"He needed the family divided."
There was a photograph taken outside the hospital less than twenty minutes earlier.
It showed Lucia entering through the private entrance.
Underneath was a message.
ONE OLD WOMAN. ONE PREGNANT WIFE. ADRIANO CANNOT PROTECT BOTH.
Adriano rose.
Then Bella's phone rang.
Lucia's name appeared.
Bella answered.
"Mama?"
No response.
Only the sound of an elevator bell.
Then a man's voice.
May you like
"Good morning, Mrs. Valente."
Paolo.
