Chapter 7 - The Video

The storage facility's security footage changed the case.
At 9:14 p.m., a man wearing a baseball cap entered the corridor carrying a gasoline container.
At 9:17, he chained the exterior handle.
At 9:19, he started the fire.
Police identified him within hours.
Raymond Pike.
Former Mercer Holdings security chief.
He had worked directly for Charles for seventeen years.
But finding Pike and proving who ordered him were different things.
Pike disappeared.
John's company, meanwhile, was deteriorating.
Two clients suspended contracts.
A lender demanded additional collateral.
Rumors appeared online that Walker Systems was insolvent.
John knew where they came from.
Olivia blamed herself.
He refused to let her.
“You didn't attack my company.”
“But knowing me caused it.”
“No. Evan and Charles caused it.”
“You could lose everything.”
John looked around his office.
“Everything?”
She understood what he meant.
His company mattered.
But it wasn't everything.
The distinction terrified her.
She had spent four years constructing a life that required no one.
Noah.
Her job.
Their small apartment.
Enough.
Then John Walker had appeared with an expensive shirt, terrible dinosaur hat, and an irritating refusal to leave when things became difficult.
She loved him.
The realization arrived so simply that she hated it.
She didn't tell him.
Not yet.
That afternoon, Noah disappeared.
Olivia arrived at preschool at 3:20.
His teacher met her outside.
“Your mother-in-law picked him up.”
Olivia's blood turned cold.
“What?”
“A woman named Margaret Mercer.”
“Margaret wouldn't—”
Her phone rang.
Margaret.
Olivia answered.
“Where is Noah?”
“What are you talking about?”
The world tilted.
Police arrived within minutes.
Security footage showed a woman resembling Margaret entering with identification and paperwork.
But it wasn't Margaret.
The documents were forged.
John reached the school while Olivia was giving officers Noah's clothing description.
She saw him and broke.
“They took him.”
John held her.
“We're getting him back.”
“How?”
Before he could answer, her phone buzzed.
A video.
Noah sat on a couch.
He wasn't crying.
Sir Chomp-a-Lot was in his lap.
A man's voice spoke from behind the camera.
“Bring Daniel's evidence to the Mercer estate. Olivia alone. No police.”
Then Noah looked at the camera.
“Mommy?”
The video ended.
Olivia stopped functioning.
John took the phone.
He watched it again.
Then again.
“What are you doing?”
“Looking.”
“For what?”
“The room.”
He paused the video.
Behind Noah was a window.
Outside, barely visible, stood a red-and-white water tower.
John knew it.
Mercer Holdings owned a private rehabilitation center north of the city.
He had visited years earlier during a software contract pitch.
The tower stood beside it.
He called police.
The FBI became involved because Noah had been taken across county lines.
Olivia wanted to go there herself.
John refused.
“If you walk in with that evidence, you're giving them exactly what they want.”
“My son is there.”
“And getting yourself killed won't help him.”
She slapped him.
The sound stunned both of them.
Olivia immediately covered her mouth.
“John—”
He didn't move.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I'm sorry.”
“I know.”
“I don't know what to do.”
“Yes, you do.”
He took her hands.
“You let people help you.”
Federal agents surrounded the facility after midnight.
They found Noah in a private residential wing.
Alive.
Unhurt.
Raymond Pike was there.
Charles Mercer wasn't.
Pike was arrested trying to escape through a service corridor.
Olivia reached Noah outside.
He ran into her arms.
She fell to her knees.
“Mommy!”
She held him so tightly he complained.
“You're squishing me.”
“I know.”
John stood several feet away.
Noah spotted him.
“John!”
John crouched.
Noah ran into him too.
For one dangerous second, John couldn't speak.
Then Noah whispered into his neck.
“I knew you'd come.”
John closed his eyes.
“Always.”
Olivia heard it.
So did one of the federal agents.
But Pike's arrest brought an unexpected revelation.
He hadn't been working for Charles recently.
Charles had been hospitalized privately for nearly a week after a second stroke.
He couldn't have ordered Noah's kidnapping.
Investigators searched Pike's phone.
The instructions came from another number.
When agents traced it, everyone went silent.
The number belonged to Evan Mercer.
Olivia stared at the report.
“No.”
John's jaw tightened.
Margaret sank into a chair.
Evan had told them Charles killed Daniel.
Evan had given Olivia the documents.
Evan had pointed them toward the storage unit.
Because he had needed them to find Daniel's evidence for him.
And when they found it, he tried to burn them alive.
Charles had been guilty of fraud.
Perhaps much more.
But Evan had been orchestrating the terror around Olivia.
The threat.
The motorcycle.
The fire.
And now Noah.
John looked toward the interrogation room where Pike sat.
“We've been manipulated from the beginning.”
Then an agent entered.
“There's something else.”
He placed a photograph on the table.
It had been recovered from Pike's phone.
Daniel Mercer stood beside his car on the night he died.
May you like
Behind him stood Evan.
And according to the timestamp, the photograph had been taken only nineteen minutes before Daniel's fatal crash.
