Chapter 6 - The Man Everyone Blamed

Olivia didn't believe Evan.

Not completely.

But doubt was enough.

She called John.

He answered on the first ring.

“Are you okay?”

Not hello.

Not why are you calling.

Just that.

Her chest tightened.

“I need to see you.”

Thirty minutes later, John arrived at a coffee shop near Noah's preschool.

Olivia pushed Evan's documents across the table.

John read everything twice.

“This could be fabricated.”

“I know.”

“But?”

“But Daniel's letter said he'd found irregularities. It never actually said Evan created them.”

John leaned back.

“So we've been looking at the wrong Mercer.”

They contacted Margaret.

She refused to discuss Charles over the phone.

That evening they met at John's apartment.

Margaret arrived pale.

When Olivia showed her the documents, she sat without speaking for almost a minute.

Finally she said, “Daniel confronted Charles two days before he died.”

Olivia's eyes filled.

“You knew?”

“I heard them arguing.”

“About what?”

“Daniel said Charles had been stealing from the trusts for years.”

Margaret explained.

Charles had built Mercer Holdings into an empire, but the empire was weaker than anyone knew. Bad investments had created enormous hidden liabilities. Charles began borrowing against family trusts and falsifying internal records.

Daniel discovered it.

“He threatened to go to federal authorities,” Margaret said.

“And two days later he died,” John said.

Margaret nodded.

“Why didn't you tell the police?”

The shame on her face answered before she spoke.

“I was afraid.”

Olivia stood.

“You let me believe it was an accident for four years.”

“I had no proof.”

“You had suspicion.”

“I had a husband who controlled every account, every attorney, every person around me.”

“You had a son!”

“So did you.”

Margaret's voice cracked.

“And I have hated myself every day since.”

Silence.

John stepped between the emotional fault lines before they split completely.

“We need evidence.”

Evan unexpectedly provided it.

Daniel had kept an old storage unit in Queens.

Charles never knew about it.

Evan had found the rental receipt among Daniel's belongings but had never located the key.

Olivia knew where it was.

Daniel had given her an old brass key years ago.

She still had it in a jewelry box.

They went that night.

Inside the unit were ordinary pieces of Daniel's life.

Camping gear.

College books.

An old guitar.

Boxes of photographs.

Then John found a fireproof case.

The brass key opened it.

Inside were ledgers, flash drives, copies of contracts, and a voice recorder.

Olivia pressed play.

Daniel's voice filled the storage unit.

“If you're hearing this, something probably happened before I could finish what I started.”

Olivia covered her mouth.

John stood beside her.

Daniel described Charles's financial scheme.

Then he described something worse.

Charles had pressured Daniel to surrender his future voting rights.

Daniel refused.

The final recording was dated the night before his death.

“My father threatened Olivia today.”

Margaret began crying.

Daniel continued.

“He said if I don't cooperate, he'll make sure she and the baby disappear from Mercer life permanently.”

Olivia's knees weakened.

John caught her.

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Then a sound came from outside.

Metal scraping concrete.

John looked toward the entrance.

Smoke rolled underneath the storage-unit door.

“Fire.”

Someone had locked them inside.

Flames climbed the outer corridor.

John slammed against the door.

It wouldn't move.

Margaret coughed.

Olivia grabbed the evidence case.

“There's another exit?”

“No.”

John looked upward.

A narrow ventilation window.

Too small for an adult.

But maybe—

He took out his phone.

No signal.

The smoke thickened.

Olivia's eyes watered.

“John.”

He grabbed a metal shelving bar and smashed the window.

Again.

Again.

Glass shattered.

Outside, sirens became faintly audible.

Someone had seen the smoke.

John pulled his jacket around Olivia's face.

“Stay low.”

Firefighters reached them minutes later.

It felt like an hour.

Outside, coughing beneath flashing emergency lights, Olivia still clutched Daniel's case.

John sat beside her.

She suddenly kissed him.

No warning.

No hesitation.

John froze for half a heartbeat, then kissed her back.

When she pulled away, both were breathless.

“I thought we were going to die.”

“We didn't.”

“I know.”

He touched her cheek.

Across the parking lot, Evan stared at the burning building.

Then he turned toward them.

“My father knows we found it.”

John looked at the fire.

“No.”

He pointed toward the security camera above the entrance.

“Whoever did this knows.”

Evan followed his gaze.

May you like

The camera's indicator light was still blinking.

And that meant there might finally be a recording of the person who had tried to kill them.
