Chapter 7 - When Adrian Vale Walked Away From His Empire

Dominic’s arrest did not solve everything.

It detonated everything.

Federal investigators descended on Vale Meridian.

The board suspended executives.

News vans surrounded headquarters.

Every secret Adrian’s family had buried began rising.

Including Adrian’s.

Elena found him alone in his office three mornings later.

Boxes sat on the floor.

“What are you doing?”

“Leaving.”

She froze.

“Why?”

“The board accepted my resignation.”

“You resigned?”

“Yes.”

“Without telling me?”

Adrian looked at her.

“I didn’t realize I required permission.”

“You don’t.”

She folded her arms.

“But you could have mentioned it to the woman who almost got murdered helping save your company.”

“Fair.”

She walked closer.

“Why resign?”

“Because Dominic wasn’t the only problem.”

Adrian looked around.

“I spent years benefiting from fear. I protected men I knew were dangerous because their loyalty was useful.”

“You didn’t do what Dominic did.”

“No.”

He met her eyes.

“But if I spend the rest of my life measuring myself against the worst man I know, that’s a very low standard.”

Elena went quiet.

“I’m cooperating with investigators.”

“Fully?”

“Yes.”

“You could go to prison.”

“Yes.”

Her face changed.

Adrian approached.

“Elena.”

“You should have told me.”

“I’m telling you.”

“After deciding everything alone.”

His jaw tightened.

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“Stop.”

“Elena—”

“No.”

She stepped back.

“You don’t get to use protection as a prettier word for shutting me out.”

That hit him.

She left.

For four days they did not speak.

Adrian testified before a federal grand jury.

Thomas testified too.

Dominic was charged with racketeering, attempted murder, conspiracy, bribery and multiple financial crimes.

Adrian provided evidence against several remaining criminal alliances.

It made him enemies.

Then, unexpectedly, it gave him freedom.

Prosecutors found that many of Adrian’s most serious suspected crimes had actually been orchestrated by Dominic using Adrian’s reputation as cover.

Adrian was not innocent.

He admitted financial violations and obstruction.

But he had also spent years quietly moving Vale Meridian toward legitimate operations.

His cooperation mattered.

He received probation, financial penalties and strict corporate restrictions rather than prison.

Elena watched the news from her father’s temporary apartment.

Thomas looked at her.

“You love him.”

She glared.

“Everyone has apparently decided to become an expert.”

“I’m your father.”

“You disappeared for seventeen years. Your expertise license expired.”

Thomas winced.

“Fair.”

Elena immediately regretted it.

“Dad.”

“No. You’re allowed to be angry.”

He looked toward the television.

“But don’t punish Adrian for leaving because you’re still angry that I did.”

That silenced her.

Thomas continued.

“Different man. Different mistake.”

Elena looked down.

That evening she went to Adrian’s penthouse.

It was nearly empty.

He had sold it.

“You’re moving?”

He looked surprised to see her.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I haven’t decided.”

“That sounds unlike you.”

“I’m experimenting with uncertainty.”

She almost smiled.

Adrian looked tired.

Human.

“I was wrong,” he said.

Elena blinked.

“That was alarmingly fast.”

“I’ve had four days.”

“Continue.”

“I should have told you before resigning.”

“Yes.”

“I should have trusted you to decide what risk you were willing to accept.”

“Yes.”

“And I should not have assumed loving someone gives me authority over their choices.”

Elena stopped.

“Loving?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Of everything I said, naturally that’s the word you select.”

“Adrian.”

He looked at her.

There was no billionaire.

No feared crime boss.

Just a man standing in a half-empty apartment.

“Yes.”

Her heart raced.

“Yes what?”

“I love you.”

She swallowed.

“You’ve known me three weeks.”

“Twenty-four days.”

“You counted?”

“Unfortunately.”

She laughed.

He smiled.

Then she walked toward him.

“I love you too.”

Adrian stared.

“You could have made me suffer longer.”

“I considered it.”

She kissed him.

This time there was no danger around them.

No guns.

No locked rooms.

No dead executives’ passwords.

Just two complicated people choosing something neither had planned.

Later, Elena found a box on the kitchen counter.

Inside was a stained notebook.

She stopped breathing.

Her mother’s recipe book.

“How?”

Adrian leaned against the doorway.

“Marcus entered your apartment with firefighters before the roof collapsed.”

Elena turned.

“You saved it?”

“Marcus did.”

She hugged the notebook to her chest.

Then looked at Adrian.

“You kept this from me?”

“I was going to give it to you after the investigation.”

She started crying.

Adrian panicked.

“Why are you crying?”

“Because I’m happy.”

“That seems inefficient.”

She laughed and cried harder.

He held her.

Then his phone rang.

Marcus.

Adrian answered.

His expression changed.

“What do you mean, gone?”

Elena looked up.

Adrian lowered the phone.

“Dominic escaped federal transport.”

The warmth vanished.

“How?”

“We don’t know.”

Elena’s phone buzzed.

A photograph appeared from an unknown number.

Thomas.

Bound to a chair.

Below it were six words.

Bring Adrian, or lose him again.
