Chapter 4 - The Photograph in Dominic Vale’s Safe

Dominic Vale disappeared before sunrise.
His mansion was empty.
His private plane remained at Midway.
His accounts appeared untouched.
It was exactly the kind of disappearance that told Adrian his uncle had prepared for this moment years in advance.
Elena sat at Adrian’s dining table surrounded by financial statements.
She had slept four hours in two days.
Adrian placed a plate beside her.
She ignored it.
“Eat.”
“No.”
His eyebrow lifted.
Elena continued typing.
“Now you know how it feels.”
“Feelings are overrated.”
“So is starvation.”
He pushed the plate closer.
She looked down.
Eggs.
Toast.
Bacon.
Fruit.
“Did you make this?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“Why?”
“You don’t strike me as someone who understands a frying pan.”
“I understand firearms.”
“Not transferable.”
Marcus entered.
“Dominic has three known properties under shell companies.”
Adrian stood.
“Search all of them.”
“Already happening.”
Marcus placed a folder down.
“But Elena found a fourth.”
Adrian looked at her.
She smiled faintly.
“Numbers don’t lie.”
The fourth property was an abandoned lakeside hotel in Wisconsin purchased through Ashbourne Trust twelve years earlier.
No guests.
No revenue.
Yet it consumed nearly $400,000 annually in maintenance.
Adrian understood.
“A safe site.”
Elena nodded.
“Or somebody’s very expensive empty hotel.”
They left an hour later.
Adrian wanted Elena to remain behind.
Elena reminded him that his penthouse had already failed to prevent an attempted murder.
He stopped arguing.
The hotel sat beside Lake Geneva beneath a pale winter sky.
Its windows were boarded.
The lobby smelled of dust.
Marcus’s team cleared the building.
No Dominic.
No Thomas Marlowe.
But in an upstairs office they found a hidden safe.
Inside were photographs.
Elena picked up the first.
Her father.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Alive.
She sat down hard.
Adrian crouched beside her.
The photograph was dated four months earlier.
Thomas stood beside a shipping container.
Behind him was a facility code.
Elena’s hand trembled.
“He really is alive.”
Adrian said nothing.
There was nothing useful to say.
A second photograph showed Thomas with Dominic.
They were shaking hands.
Elena’s hope shattered.
“No.”
Adrian examined it.
“Don’t assume.”
“He’s working with him.”
“Photographs show moments, not motives.”
She looked at Adrian.
“That’s surprisingly reasonable.”
“I have occasional episodes.”
Marcus found a recorder.
The audio changed everything.
Dominic’s voice:
“You continue cooperating, your daughter stays untouched.”
Thomas answered.
“If you go near Elena, I expose everything.”
Elena covered her mouth.
Her father had not abandoned her.
He had been protecting her.
For seventeen years.
Adrian turned toward the window.
His uncle had used a daughter as leverage.
There were rules even men like Adrian followed.
Dominic had broken one.
Marcus continued searching.
He found a ledger.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Judges.
Union officials.
Police officers.
Politicians.
Then Adrian saw one entry.
Nathaniel Vale — termination authorized.
His father.
Adrian froze.
His father had died twenty years earlier.
Supposedly from a heart attack.
Elena noticed.
“What?”
He showed her.
The color drained from Marcus’s face.
“Dominic killed your father.”
Adrian did not respond.
He walked outside.
Elena followed.
Snow had begun falling.
Adrian stood near the frozen lake.
“Go back inside.”
“No.”
“Elena.”
“You found out your uncle murdered your father.”
“I know what I found.”
“And you’re pretending you don’t feel anything.”
His eyes turned toward her.
“You have known me less than a week.”
“Long enough to know you get quieter when you’re furious.”
Adrian laughed once.
Without humor.
“He raised me.”
Elena waited.
“After my father died, Dominic raised me.”
The words sounded torn from somewhere deep.
“He taught me everything.”
“Including the wrong things?”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked toward the lake.
“I spent twenty years becoming the man he taught me to be.”
Elena moved beside him.
“Then stop.”
He looked at her.
“That simple?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“But maybe that clear.”
Adrian stared.
Something passed between them.
Then Marcus shouted from the hotel.
“Adrian!”
They ran inside.
A security monitor had activated.
Someone was approaching.
One vehicle.
It stopped outside.
An older man climbed out.
Elena stopped breathing.
The man looked toward the hotel.
Gray hair.
Weathered face.
Same eyes she saw every morning in the mirror.
“Dad.”
She ran.
Adrian caught her.
“Wait.”
“That’s my father!”
“We don’t know who followed him.”
She fought his grip.
“Adrian!”
A gunshot shattered a window.
Adrian threw Elena to the floor.
Marcus’s men returned fire.
Thomas Marlowe ran toward cover.
A second shot struck him.
“Dad!”
Elena screamed.
Adrian moved.
He crossed the lobby under fire with Marcus covering him.
Thomas collapsed beside the entrance.
Adrian reached him.
Dragged him inside.
Blood covered Thomas’s coat.
Elena crawled toward him.
“Dad.”
Thomas stared at her.
Seventeen years disappeared from his face.
“My little Ellie.”
She broke.
He touched her cheek.
“I’m sorry.”
“No. Don’t.”
“I tried to come home.”
“Don’t talk.”
Thomas looked past her.
At Adrian.
His expression changed.
“You look like Nathaniel.”
Adrian knelt.
“You knew my father.”
Thomas laughed weakly.
“Better than Dominic ever did.”
Another shot hit the building.
Marcus shouted that they had to move.
Thomas grabbed Adrian’s sleeve.
“Dominic isn’t stealing from you.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Thomas coughed.
“You don’t.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“He’s buying an army.”
Silence.
Thomas whispered.
“And when he has enough men, he isn’t coming for your company.”
May you like
His eyes moved toward Elena.
“He’s coming for Chicago.”
