Chapter 7 - The Secret Between Their Fathers

Emily wanted to run directly to the address Marcus sent.
Jonathan physically blocked the door.
“You cannot go alone.”
“He has Lily.”
“And if you walk into whatever he planned, he’ll have both of you.”
Emily shoved his chest.
“That is my daughter!”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t!”
Jonathan absorbed the words without reacting.
Emily immediately regretted them.
His wife and unborn son had died in a car accident 9 years earlier.
He rarely spoke about them.
“I’m sorry.”
Jonathan stepped back.
“Don’t be. You’re scared.”
Police traced Marcus’s message to an abandoned Hartwell records facility outside the city.
Before tactical officers moved, Emily demanded answers.
“What did your father do to mine?”
Jonathan looked confused.
“Who was your father?”
“Thomas Carter.”
Jonathan froze.
Emily saw recognition.
“You know that name.”
Jonathan sat slowly.
“My father mentioned him once.”
“When?”
“The night before he died.”
Emily stared.
Jonathan retrieved an old notebook from a locked drawer.
Inside was a handwritten line:
Thomas Carter tried to warn me. I failed him.
Emily’s hands shook.
Her mother had always said Thomas died in a highway accident.
But corporate records revealed something else.
Thomas Carter had been an internal auditor.
At Hartwell.
Twenty years earlier.
He had discovered an off-book investment operation involving Charles Hartwell’s business partner.
That partner was Vanessa Cole’s father.
Richard Cole.
The scandal had been buried.
Thomas left the company.
Six months later, he died.
There was never proof his death was connected.
But suddenly Emily understood why Vanessa had reacted so strongly to her.
She had recognized the surname.
Marcus had too.
Emily had walked into Hartwell believing she was an anonymous applicant.
She had actually stepped into a story that began before she was old enough to understand it.
Police prepared the rescue.
Emily agreed to wear a wire.
Jonathan objected.
She ignored him.
“You hired me because I don’t abandon what becomes my responsibility.”
“This is different.”
“No. It isn’t.”
At the abandoned facility, Emily entered carrying the flash drive.
Marcus waited.
Lily sat nearby.
Unhurt.
“Mommy!”
Emily almost ran to her.
Marcus raised a hand.
“Drive first.”
Emily placed it on the table.
“Let her go.”
Marcus smiled.
“You have your father’s eyes.”
“Don’t talk about him.”
“He was stubborn too.”
Emily’s heartbeat hammered.
“You killed him?”
Marcus laughed.
“No. I was 19.”
“Then who?”
A voice answered behind her.
“My father.”
Emily turned.
Vanessa Cole stepped from the shadows.
The truth unfolded quickly.
Richard Cole had operated a secret embezzlement network through Hartwell decades earlier.
Thomas Carter discovered it.
Charles Hartwell learned part of the truth but protected the company instead of exposing everything.
Thomas intended to go to authorities.
Before he could, his car crashed.
Vanessa claimed her father had arranged it.
Years later, Marcus became her partner.
They resurrected the shell-company network.
But their larger plan was revenge.
Destroy Hartwell.
Take control of Northstar during the collapse.
And erase the evidence connecting their families to the original crimes.
“Why use Ryan?” Emily asked.
“Because weak men are useful,” Vanessa replied.
Emily looked at Lily.
“Let her leave.”
Vanessa smiled.
“You still think you're negotiating.”
Emily touched the necklace at her throat.
It contained the emergency transmitter police had given her.
“I think you talk too much.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Outside, engines roared.
Marcus grabbed Lily.
Emily moved before she thought.
She slammed the table into him.
Lily screamed.
The doors burst open.
Police flooded the warehouse.
Marcus ran.
Vanessa reached for Emily, but officers pulled her back.
Emily dropped to her knees and wrapped Lily in her arms.
“Mommy.”
“I’m here.”
Jonathan appeared behind the officers.
He stopped when he saw them.
Emily looked up.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Then Lily reached one hand toward him.
Jonathan crossed the room.
He knelt beside them.
Emily grabbed him.
The three remained there while chaos unfolded around them.
Later, Vanessa and Marcus were arrested.
The evidence recovered from the facility cleared Jonathan of the recent fraud.
But it did not clear his father.
Charles Hartwell had knowingly concealed Richard Cole’s crimes 20 years earlier.
Jonathan faced a choice.
He could protect the Hartwell name.
Or expose everything.
At a press conference the next morning, he walked toward the microphones.
Emily watched from behind the cameras.
Jonathan opened the folder.
“My father built this company.”
Pause.
“He also made a decision that caused innocent people to pay for crimes they did not commit.”
Reporters erupted.
Jonathan continued.
“I will not protect his reputation at the expense of the truth.”
Emily’s eyes filled.
For the first time, her father’s story would be heard.
But there was still one mystery.

Ryan was missing.
And when police finally located him, the truth he carried threatened to change Emily’s life one more time.
