Chapter 6 - What Jonathan Never Told Her

Emily did not open the files alone.
She took the drive to Jonathan.
They sat inside his office after midnight while a cybersecurity specialist copied it onto an isolated computer.
The first documents appeared.
Emails.
Invoices.
Contracts.
Then Emily saw the date.
Five years earlier.
Her marriage had collapsed around the same time.
Jonathan leaned closer.
Marcus Vale had been moving money through small accounting firms for years.
Emily’s former employer was one of them.
But then another name appeared.
Hartwell Financial Group.
Emily slowly turned toward Jonathan.
“You knew Marcus.”
Jonathan did not answer immediately.
“Yes.”
“How well?”
“He worked here 8 years ago.”
Emily stood.
“You never told me.”
“I didn’t know the connection to your company until recently.”
“But you knew he was connected to Hartwell.”
“Yes.”
Her trust cracked.
“Why hide it?”
Jonathan looked at the screen.
“Because Marcus wasn’t fired for incompetence.”
“What was he fired for?”
“He accused my father of financial misconduct.”
Emily stared.
Jonathan’s father, Charles Hartwell, had founded the company.
He had died 3 years earlier.
“Was Marcus telling the truth?”
“I spent years believing he wasn’t.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Jonathan met her eyes.
“I don’t know.”
The room went quiet.
Emily returned to the computer.
A document caught her attention.
A ledger.
Payments to shell corporations.
Some predated Jonathan’s leadership.
Then she found one made to her former husband.
Ryan Carter.
$85,000.
Five years earlier.
Emily’s knees weakened.
Jonathan moved toward her.
She stepped away.
“No.”
“Emily—”
“My husband didn’t just leave because of gambling.”
She opened another file.
Ryan had been paid to deliver accounting records from Emily’s employer to Marcus.
Her marriage had collapsed because Ryan had become involved in financial crimes.
Perhaps he had left partly to escape them.
That did not excuse him.
But it changed the story.
Emily scrolled.
Then another name appeared.
Vanessa Cole.
The payment was not to Vanessa.
It was from her.
Jonathan went still.
“This can’t be right.”
“Why?”
“Because Vanessa joined Hartwell 4 years ago.”
Emily pointed to the date.
The transfer happened 6 years earlier.
“So she knew Marcus before she worked here.”
Jonathan immediately called security.
Vanessa’s office was empty.
Her computer had been wiped.
Her phone was off.
She had vanished.
The following morning, news broke.
Hartwell Financial Group was under federal investigation for potential accounting irregularities.
The Northstar acquisition was suspended.
Hartwell shares fell sharply.
Reporters surrounded the building.
Someone had leaked documents implicating Jonathan personally.
The board called an emergency meeting.
Emily watched Jonathan enter the conference room alone.
Three hours later, he emerged no longer in operational control.
The board had placed him on temporary leave pending investigation.
Emily found him inside the elevator.
The same elevator where they had met.
For once, he looked tired.
Not CEO tired.
Human tired.
“I suppose this is where you tell me everything happens for a reason,” he said.
Emily leaned against the wall.
“I hate that sentence.”
He laughed quietly.
Then his expression faded.
“I could lose the company.”
“Did you steal the money?”
“No.”
“Did you authorize the payments?”
“No.”
“Then we find who did.”
“You still believe me?”
Emily thought about it.
“I believe evidence.”
“That sounded less comforting than I hoped.”
She looked at him.
“And I believe you.”
Jonathan's eyes lifted.
Neither moved.
The elevator seemed suddenly too small.
He took one step closer.
Emily could hear his breathing.
Then her phone rang.
Lily’s school.
Emily answered.
“Hello?”
Her expression changed instantly.
“What do you mean she isn’t there?”
Jonathan straightened.
Emily’s voice broke.
“She was picked up?”
The school administrator said someone had presented identification and emergency authorization.
A man claiming to be Lily’s father.
Ryan Carter.
Emily’s blood turned cold.
“That’s impossible.”
The administrator hesitated.
“Ms. Carter, the man had documentation.”
Emily looked at Jonathan.
“Ryan has Lily.”
But Jonathan was already reaching for his phone.
Twenty minutes later, police discovered something worse.
The man who had taken Lily was not Ryan.
Security footage showed Marcus Vale walking out of the school holding Lily’s hand.
And 30 seconds later, Emily received a message.
Bring me the flash drive. Come alone.
Underneath it was a photograph of Lily.
Then another sentence appeared.
Ask Jonathan what his father did to yours.
Emily stared at the screen.
May you like
Her father had died when she was 12.
At least, that was what she had always believed.
