Chapter 8 - The Red Thread

The Grand Ballroom was a sea of velvet, black ties, and sparkling diamonds.
A forty-foot polished runway stretched down the center of the hall, illuminated by harsh theatrical spotlights. At the back of the runway, a colossal LED screen displayed the glowing emblem of Cole House: two interlocking gold C's beneath a stylized crown.
Music—a thumping, dramatic orchestral mix—pulsed through the subwoofers, vibrating through the champagne flutes resting on the VIP tables.
Behind the curtain, Gillian Vance was pacing frantically. She held a wireless microphone against her collar, checking her reflection in a handheld mirror.
"Where is the finale piece?" Gillian barked at the backstage coordinator. "The program says the retrospective finale is Margaret's 2004 archive gown! Why isn't it on the primary mannequin?"
The coordinator looked terrified. "Mrs. Vance, Mr. Cole’s personal security team removed the mannequin twenty minutes ago. They said the final piece was being prepped under executive supervision."
Gillian’s heart slammed against her ribs. "What?! Lucas can't do that! I am the Creative Director! Bring it back immediately—"
"Ladies and gentlemen," the booming voice of the gala announcer echoed over the sound system, drowning her out. "Please welcome the Creative Director of Cole House... Mrs. Gillian Vance!"
Applause erupted across the five hundred guests in the ballroom.
Gillian froze. She had no choice. She forced her signature, dazzling smile onto her face, smoothed the lapels of her emerald suit, and strode out onto the stage into the blinding glare of the spotlights.
The audience clapped enthusiastically. In the front row, the board members beamed, ready to sign the multi-million-dollar buyout contracts the moment the lights went down.
"Thank you," Gillian said into the microphone, her voice melodic, filled with faux-humility. "Thank you all. Today, as we honor the eternal memory of our founder, Margaret Cole, we celebrate not just the past, but the future. Margaret taught us that true elegance is timeless. And as I stand before you, preparing to take Cole House onto the global stage with our new European partners, I present to you the crowning jewel of Margaret’s life... the *Midnight Willow*."
Gillian raised her hand toward the back of the stage, expecting a spotlight to hit an empty pedestal so she could announce that the gown had been 'tragically vandalized and withdrawn.'
Instead, the lights throughout the entire ballroom abruptly snapped off.
Pitch blackness swallowed the room.
Gasping whispers rippled through the audience. Gillian blinked into the dark, her smile vanishing. "What is going on? Tech, fix the lighting!"
Then, a single, piercing spotlight ignited from the balcony above.
The beam didn't hit the stage. It hit the towering double mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom.
The doors swung open.
Standing in the blinding beam of light, framed against the marble entrance, was Elena Carter.
The purple silk of the *Midnight Willow* caught the light like liquid amethysts. The gold branches seemed to writhe with electric fire, the pearls glowing softly against the dark fabric. Elena stepped forward, her stride confident, elegant, and completely arresting.
A collective gasp swept through the five hundred guests.
Fashion critics stood up from their chairs. Cameras flashed in a blinding flurry of strobes. The dress wasn't just beautiful—it was an undeniable, historic triumph of design.
Gillian stood frozen on the stage, the microphone trembling in her hand as the color drained completely from her face.
Walking two paces behind Elena, clad in a sharp midnight-blue tuxedo, was Lucas Cole.
He held a remote control in his hand. He clicked it.
Behind Gillian, the giant LED screen flickered. The corporate logo vanished.
In its place, magnified across thirty feet of high-definition glass, appeared the original 2018 memorandum written in Margaret Cole’s hand.

And beside it, displayed in horrifying, crystal-clear detail, was the security camera footage from the Grand Cole basement: Gillian Vance herself, carrying an eight-inch tailor's shear, slicing the waist of the *Midnight Willow* and tossing it into the incinerator chute.
