Chapter 6 - The Stolen Legacy

The night passed in a blur of focused fury.

By 4:00 a.m., the penthouse had been transformed into an elite atelier. Sophie had arrived thirty minutes earlier, escorted by two of Lucas’s most trusted private security personnel. The younger girl had walked in pale and trembling, but the moment she saw Elena sitting beneath the pendant light, safe and holding their mother’s needle, Sophie had collapsed into her sister’s arms, weeping with relief.

"She tried to intimidate me, Elena," Sophie whispered, wiping her red-rimmed eyes as she sat on the leather sofa wrapped in a cashmere blanket. "A man in a gray suit came to the apartment right before Mr. Cole’s car arrived. He said if you didn't hand over a 'family document,' they would revoke my nursing school accreditation. He knew my dean’s name!"

Lucas, who had been reviewing legal filings on his tablet, looked up, his jaw clenched tight. "That was Gillian’s fixer, Vance’s personal attorney. Don't worry, Sophie. Your dean received a personal phone call from the president of the Cole Foundation twenty minutes ago. Your full tuition for the rest of your degree has been permanently endowed. No one touches you."

Sophie looked at Lucas in stunned disbelief, then at Elena. "Elena... what is happening?"

"Justice," Elena replied softly, not breaking the rhythm of her stitching. "Finally."

With every hour that ticked away toward dawn, the transformation of the *Midnight Willow* deepened. Elena hadn't simply repaired the cut Gillian had made; she had unlocked the full potential of the gown that Margaret Cole had been unable to complete before her health failed.

Using the original sketches from the hidden vellum, Elena re-anchored the waist using a bias-cut underlay of reinforced organza. She wove tiny river-pearl beads into the gold thread, creating the illusion of dew clinging to the branches of a willow tree at midnight. The dress was no longer just an archival relic—it was a breathing masterpiece of haute couture.

At 7:30 a.m., Lucas stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the sunrise paint the Chicago skyline in shades of pink and amber. He held two cups of coffee, walking over to Elena’s side and setting one down beside her pincushion.

"You haven't slept a minute," he said quietly.

"I haven't felt this awake in six years," Elena answered, looking up at him with a faint smile. Her fingers were sore, her eyes burned from the strain, but her posture was no longer that of a downtrodden maid. She held her head high.

Lucas looked down at the finished gown on the mannequin form. A long, stunned silence settled between them.

"My mother loved beauty," Lucas said, his voice thick with emotion. "She used to say that true fashion wasn't about vanity—it was about armor. She believed that when a woman put on the right dress, she could withstand any storm in the world."

He looked at Elena, his slate-gray eyes softening with an intensity that sent a quiet shiver through her chest. "Margaret saw that in you six years ago, Elena. And I see it now."

Elena held his gaze, the unspoken connection between them electric and terrifying in its depth. Before she could answer, the double doors of the penthouse suite swung open.

Arthur, Lucas’s chief corporate counsel, walked in, his expression grim.

"Lucas," Arthur said without greeting. "We have a massive complication."

Lucas’s demeanor instantly snapped back to ice-cold executive. "What did Gillian do?"

"She called an emergency board session for 10:30 a.m.—ninety minutes before the press gala," Arthur said, laying a red folder on the table. "She presented a forged non-disclosure and intellectual property assignment agreement dated five years ago, allegedly signed by Rose Carter. It claims Rose sold all Carter family patterns and stitching techniques to Gillian Vance personally for ten thousand dollars."

Elena rose to her feet, horror flashing across her face. "That's impossible! My mother never signed anything! She despised Gillian!"

"It doesn't matter if it’s a forgery right now," Arthur warned. "The board’s corporate compliance officer has flagged the *Midnight Willow* as disputed property. If you bring that dress onto the runway without resolving the ownership dispute, the board has the legal authority to seize it immediately and ban Elena from the premises."

Elena’s heart sank like a stone. "She planned this. Even with Margaret's letter, she’s burying us in legal red tape until the French sale closes."

Lucas stared at the red folder. His hands curled into tight fists.

Then, he looked up at the ceiling, toward the roof of the Grand Cole.

"She thinks she’s playing by corporate rules," Lucas said, a dangerous, razor-sharp smile spreading across his face. "Gillian forgot one very important detail."

"What detail?" Arthur asked.

"This hotel isn't owned by the Cole House board of directors," Lucas said, pulling a golden master keycard from his pocket. "It’s owned by me. Personally. And what happens in my ballroom doesn't belong to the board. It belongs to the audience."
