Chapter 4 - Rocco’s Confession

Sienna wanted to hate him cleanly.
Rocco made that impossible.
Not because his explanation absolved him.
It did not.
But because the truth was worse than simple ambition.
They sat inside an unmarked SUV while firefighters continued working across the street.
Rocco kept both hands visible.
“I lied to Adrian,” he said. “I paid Corrado. I made sure everyone believed he could never have children.”
“You blackmailed a doctor.”
“Yes.”
“You let Adrian believe he was broken for nine years.”
Rocco flinched.
“Yes.”
“And now you expect sympathy?”
“No.”
The answer disarmed her.
“Then explain.”
Rocco looked through the windshield.
“Your husband’s accident was ordered by my older brother.”
Sienna frowned.
“Adrian’s father?”
“Matteo.”
Adrian rarely spoke of him.
Matteo Valente had died seven years earlier of a heart attack.
According to Rocco, Matteo had been obsessed with preserving his own control. When Vittorio’s trust made Adrian the future head of the legitimate Valente empire, Matteo began seeing his own son as competition.
“He ordered the crash to frighten Adrian into leaving the business,” Rocco said.
“But Adrian nearly died.”
“Matteo never understood moderation.”
Rocco had discovered the truth after the crash.
Then he discovered something else.
Matteo had arranged for Adrian to undergo a procedure during surgery that would permanently ensure infertility.
Corrado refused.
Rocco intervened.
“You saved him?”
“I stopped the procedure.”
“Then why fake the diagnosis?”
“Because Matteo told me if Adrian ever produced an heir, he would finish what he started.”
Sienna stared.
“You could have told Adrian.”
“He was twenty-five. Furious. Proud. He would have confronted his father.”
“So instead you stole nine years from him.”
Rocco looked older suddenly.
“Yes.”
“But Matteo is dead.”
“Which is why I intended to tell Adrian.”
“When?”
Rocco said nothing.
Sienna laughed bitterly.
“Exactly.”
He had another reason.
Luca.
Once Matteo died, Rocco realized his own son would inherit if Adrian remained childless.
Fear became convenience.
Protection became greed.
He allowed the lie to continue.
Then Sienna entered the family.
“I chose you because you had no connections to our world,” Rocco admitted.
“You chose me because my family was desperate.”
“Yes.”
“And because you believed Adrian and I couldn't have children.”
“Yes.”
Sienna’s hand curled.
“You're despicable.”
Rocco accepted that without protest.
“But I did not burn your bakery.”
“Who did?”
“I think Matteo left people behind.”
Her phone rang.
Adrian.
She answered instantly.
“Did you find Luca?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Something in his voice was wrong.
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
She closed her eyes.
“Adrian, Rocco is here.”
Silence.
“Get away from him.”
“He says—”
“I know what he says.”
Sienna froze.
“You know?”
“We found Luca. And the ledger.”
Adrian returned twenty minutes later.
Luca was with him, blood staining one sleeve but otherwise upright.
When Luca saw his father, he stopped.
“You lied to me.”
Rocco stood.
“Luca—”
“You told me Adrian hated me because I was next.”
“I was protecting you.”
“From what? Having a cousin?”
Rocco looked at Adrian.
Adrian approached slowly.
“You knew my father ordered the crash.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I recovered.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me believe I would never have a family.”
Rocco’s voice cracked.
“I kept you alive.”
Adrian punched him.
One blow.
Rocco hit the pavement.
Nobody moved.
Adrian stood over him, breathing hard.
Then Sienna touched his arm.
He stepped back.
That mattered.
Rocco wiped blood from his mouth.
“I deserved that.”
“You deserve more.”
“Yes.”
Luca produced the ledger.
“But we have another problem.”
The payments continued after Matteo’s death.
Large transfers went to a shell company called Vesper Holdings.
The authorized initials were not Rocco’s.
A.V.
Adrian Valente?
Impossible.
Then Sienna remembered another Valente.
Adrian’s aunt.
Alessandra Valente.
Vittorio’s only daughter.
Elegant, quiet Alessandra had been sitting at breakfast when Sienna dropped the coffee cup.
She had been the only person who did not look shocked.
Adrian flipped through the ledger.
Payments to Enzo Marchetti.
Payments to Bellini Bakery’s landlord.
A payment issued two days before the fire.
Sienna felt sick.
“Alessandra.”
Rocco nodded.
“My sister has been controlling what remained of Matteo’s network.”
“Why?”
Luca answered.
“Because Grandfather’s trust has another clause.”
If Adrian died without descendants, ownership passed to Luca.
But if Luca was legally disqualified through criminal conviction or death, control passed to Vittorio’s surviving child.
Alessandra.
Sienna whispered, “She needs Adrian dead.”
“And me,” Luca said.
A terrible realization struck her.
“She doesn't want the baby dead because it changes succession.”
Adrian looked at her.
“She wants all three of us.”
His phone buzzed.
A security alert.
Adrian opened it.
Camera footage from his townhouse.
A woman wearing housekeeping clothes entered the kitchen carrying a grocery bag.
Marco frowned.
“She isn't staff.”
They watched her approach the refrigerator.
She removed a bottle of Sienna’s prenatal juice.
Then poured something into it.
Sienna’s skin went cold.
Adrian called security.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Then the live camera feed went black.
Adrian turned toward Marco.
“Get Sienna out of the city.”
“No.”
“Sienna.”
“I am done running from people who think I'm an object in their inheritance plan.”
“You're carrying our child.”
“Exactly.”
She took the ledger from Luca.
“Your aunt thinks we're frightened and divided.”
Adrian watched her.
“What are you suggesting?”
Sienna looked at Rocco, then Luca, then her husband.
“We let her keep believing that.”
Rocco slowly stood.
Adrian understood first.
“You want to set a trap.”
“No.”
Sienna looked down at the ledger.
“I want her to set one.”
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A woman’s calm voice spoke.
“Sienna, darling.”
Alessandra.
Sienna’s heart hammered.
“I heard about your bakery. Tragic.”
Sienna said nothing.
“I also heard there may be congratulations in order.”
Adrian reached for the phone.
Sienna stopped him.
Alessandra continued.
“The family is gathering tomorrow night. Your pregnancy deserves a proper announcement.”
Sienna looked directly at Adrian.
“And if we don't come?”
Alessandra laughed softly.
“Oh, you’ll come.”
“Why?”
“Because I have something Adrian has spent nine years wanting.”
The line clicked.
A photograph arrived.
Adrian opened it.
Dr. Corrado was tied to a chair.

Beside him stood Sienna’s younger brother.
Theo.
