Chapter 1 - The Impossible Heir

The coffee cup slipped from Sienna Valente’s hand and shattered against the marble floor.
Twelve members of the most feared family in the city went silent.
Then Adrian’s uncle looked at her stomach and asked one question.
“How long?”
Sienna’s blood went cold.
Because eighty-three days earlier, everyone in that room had believed pregnancy was the one thing that could never happen in her marriage.
That belief was the reason Rocco Valente had chosen her.
Sienna had not married Adrian for love.
Her father died owing money to the Valentes.
Rocco made the consequences painfully clear.
Her mother could lose her home.
Her brother’s university tuition would disappear.
And Bellini Bakery—the business Sienna had spent three years dragging out of debt—could be gone before the end of the month.
Then Rocco offered a solution.
“You marry Adrian.”
Adrian Valente was thirty-four, controlled half the city’s legitimate businesses and enough of its darker ones that people lowered their voices when they said his name.
But one rumor followed him everywhere.
He could never father a child.
At the marriage negotiation, Rocco announced it in front of everyone.
“Adrian cannot give you children. This marriage will never create a direct heir.”
Sienna had watched Adrian’s hand close into a fist.
Then Rocco explained why that mattered.
Without Adrian’s child, succession would eventually pass through Rocco’s branch of the family.
His son Luca remained next in line.
That was when Sienna understood why she was so convenient.
She was supposed to be a wife without consequences.
A woman who could settle the Bellini debt without changing the Valente future.
But when Sienna privately asked Adrian about the diagnosis, something bothered her.
“Did you see the tests?”
“The summary.”
“The original laboratory results?”
“No.”
He had been badly injured nine years earlier.
Doctors told him the damage was permanent.
Adrian believed them.
Everyone did.
And for eighty-three days, Sienna slowly learned that the terrifying man she had been forced to marry was not the man Rocco had described.
He protected her bakery without taking it over.
Never entered her bedroom uninvited.
Never treated their contract as permission to touch her.
And when their arranged marriage finally became something neither of them had planned, the choice had been hers.
Now Sienna stood in the hallway with one hand over her mouth while the smell of coffee made her stomach revolt again.
Adrian’s palm rested between her shoulder blades.
Steady.
Protective.
Rocco remained in the dining-room doorway.
His eyes moved from Sienna’s face…
to Adrian…
then back to her stomach.
“How long have you been sick in the mornings?”
Sienna stared at him.
Something about his expression was wrong.
This was not the curiosity of a man hearing impossible news.
It looked much closer to fear.
Adrian noticed it too.
His hand went still against her back.
Rocco took one step forward.
Sienna instinctively moved closer to her husband.
And for the first time, she wondered whether Adrian’s infertility had ever been as certain as the Valente family claimed.
Adrian stepped between them.
“You don’t question my wife.”
Rocco barely seemed to hear him.
His attention remained fixed on Sienna.
“We all know what the doctors said.”
“Enough.”
But Rocco continued.
“If she is pregnant—”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“I said enough.”
The entire room froze.

And Sienna suddenly realized that a baby would not simply make the Valente family happy.
It could destroy the succession plan Rocco had spent years treating as settled.
