Chapter 7 - The Second Name

The flash drive opened at 2:14 the following morning.

Mercer Dominion's forensic team had isolated it on an offline system while Detective Torres obtained the necessary warrant.

Julian stood behind the technician.

Nathaniel beside him.

Nobody spoke.

One encrypted folder appeared.

A.M. — FAILURE CONTINGENCY

Inside were twenty-six files.

Scanned ledgers.

Photographs of checks.

Internal memos.

Audio clips.

Then a folder labeled:

REBECCA

Julian stopped breathing.

“Open it.”

Nathaniel touched his arm.

“You sure?”

“No.”

Julian looked at him.

“Open it anyway.”

The first file was a photograph.

Rebecca.

Pregnant.

Standing outside the Mercer Foundation offices.

Date stamp: seventeen months earlier.

The second showed Eleanor entering the building thirty minutes later.

The third showed a man Julian did not recognize.

Gray suit.

Broad shoulders.

Late forties.

He entered through the employee door.

Julian pointed.

“Who is that?”

Nobody answered.

The technician opened the attached notes.

Arthur's handwriting had been scanned beneath the photo.

MICHAEL VALE — intermediary. Never uses Eleanor's name electronically. Follow payments through Calder.

Julian stared.

“Vale.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“Calder & Vale.”

Torres started typing.

“Michael Thomas Vale. Forty-nine. Corporate restructuring consultant. Former forensic accountant.”

She kept reading.

Then stopped.

“He worked for Mercer Dominion.”

Julian turned.

“When?”

“Twenty years ago.”

“Doing what?”

Nathaniel answered.

“Internal audit.”

Julian looked at him.

“You knew him?”

“I knew the name.”

Nathaniel seemed suddenly uncomfortable.

“Michael Vale was one of your father's protégés.”

“And then?”

“He disappeared from the company.”

“Why?”

Nathaniel looked at the screen.

“Arthur fired him.”

“For what?”

“I was never told.”

The technician opened another document.

A bank ledger.

Calder & Vale received millions from foundation-linked vendors.

Then routed portions elsewhere.

One recipient appeared repeatedly.

NORTHSTAR FAMILY OFFICE LLC

Julian frowned.

“Whose company?”

Torres searched.

“It dissolved four years ago.”

“Owner?”

“Layered.”

“Beneficiary?”

“Working on it.”

The technician spoke.

“There’s an audio file.”

Julian looked over.

Date:

Nine days before Arthur's death.

“Play it.”

Static.

Then Arthur Mercer's voice.

Weak.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

“Michael, this ends now.”

A man's voice answered.

“You're making a mistake.”

“You told Eleanor those transfers couldn't be traced.”

“I told her they were structured badly.”

“You helped her.”

“I cleaned up after both of you.”

Julian froze.

Both.

Arthur continued.

“You worked for me.”

“And learned from you.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

A laugh.

Cold.

“You really want to pretend Eleanor invented this family?”

Silence.

Then Arthur:

“My mistakes are mine.”

“Convenient.”

“I never stole from the foundation.”

“No. You just taught everyone around you that protecting Mercer Dominion mattered more than telling the truth.”

Nathaniel looked down.

Julian stared at the speakers.

Vale continued.

“You want to confess now because you're dying.”

“I want my grandson protected.”

“You don't have a grandson yet.”

“Rebecca is pregnant.”

Another silence.

Then Vale laughed.

“That changes things.”

Arthur's voice hardened.

“Stay away from her.”

The recording ended.

No one moved.

Torres finally said:

“Arthur knew someone might target Leo before he was born.”

Nathaniel nodded.

Julian felt sick.

“And instead of telling me, he built a trust.”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“He may have thought the trust protected you.”

“It painted a target on my son.”

No one argued.

Julian turned back to the screen.

“Rebecca folder. Keep going.”

Another file.

An image of Rebecca's handwritten note.

Eleanor offered me $2 million to leave Julian before Leo is born. She says if I sign, no one ever needs to know why.

Another.

Michael Vale contacted me today. Said I should take the money. He knew the exact amount.

Another.

Arthur begged me not to tell Julian yet. He says Daniel is already carrying too much because of his illness. I told him keeping secrets is what created this.

Julian closed his eyes.

Rebecca had been surrounded by people deciding what he could handle.

His father.

His mother.

Grant.

Even Rebecca herself.

All claiming protection.

All hiding something.

The next file was an audio note recorded by Rebecca.

Julian hesitated.

Then pressed play.

Her voice filled the room.

Alive.

Warm.

A little irritated.

“If Julian ever hears this, he's going to be furious with me.”

Julian covered his mouth.

Rebecca continued.

“And he'll have every right.”

A faint laugh.

His wife's laugh.

For one impossible second, he was back in their kitchen.

Then:

“Eleanor thinks this is about the company. Arthur thinks this is about stopping Eleanor. Grant thinks it's about collecting evidence.”

A pause.

“They're all wrong.”

Julian leaned forward.

“I think it's about Michael Vale.”

Torres looked sharply at the screen.

Rebecca continued.

“He isn't helping Eleanor because he's loyal to her. He's encouraging her to keep going. Every time she starts getting scared, he gives her another way to hide the money.”

Julian looked at Nathaniel.

Rebecca's voice softened.

“I think he wants Eleanor caught eventually.”

Torres frowned.

“Why?”

As if answering her, Rebecca continued.

“Because when she falls, he wants her carrying something much bigger with her.”

The recording clicked off.

Julian stared.

“Something bigger.”

Nathaniel whispered:

“Mercer Dominion.”

Julian turned.

“What?”

Nathaniel's face had gone pale.

“If Eleanor is tied to systematic foundation fraud while serving on company committees, Vale could argue governance failures infected the parent company.”

“So?”

“If he holds the right debt, derivatives, short positions or distressed claims…”

Torres finished the thought.

“He profits when the company collapses.”

Julian looked back at Michael Vale's photograph.

The conspiracy shifted shape.

Eleanor wanted control.

Vale might want destruction.

Different motives.

Temporary alliance.

Much more dangerous.

The technician spoke again.

“There’s one more Rebecca recording.”

Date:

The morning she died.

Julian stopped.

“What time?”

“10:51 a.m.”

Twenty-six minutes before her headache began.

His throat closed.

“Play it.”

Rebecca's voice sounded different.

Breathing faster.

“Grant, I got it.”

Paper moved.

“The Northstar account.”

Julian moved closer.

“It's not Eleanor's.”

A door closed in the background.

Rebecca whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Then footsteps.

“Someone's here.”

Julian gripped the table.

Rebecca's breathing became shallow.

A man's voice sounded far away.

Too muffled to identify.

Rebecca whispered one final sentence.

“I was wrong about Arthur.”

Then the recording cut off.

Julian stared at the black screen.

Nobody spoke.

Torres finally asked:

“What did she think she was wrong about?”

Julian didn't know.

But Nathaniel did something odd.

He stepped backward.

Very slightly.

Julian noticed.

“Nathaniel.”

The lawyer looked at him.

“What?”

“You reacted.”

“No.”

“You did.”

“Julian—”

“Who owned Northstar?”

Nathaniel said nothing.

The room changed.

Torres stepped between them.

“Mr. Ross.”

Nathaniel lowered his eyes.

Julian understood.

“You know.”

Nathaniel whispered:

“I know who Arthur intended it to belong to.”

“Who?”

“His brother.”

Julian frowned.

“My uncle died fifteen years ago.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then who inherited it?”

Nathaniel looked toward the closed conference-room door.

“His son.”

Julian's heart began pounding.

He had only one first cousin on his father's side.

A man who had hugged Julian at Rebecca's funeral.

A man Eleanor called whenever there was a family crisis.

A man who sat on Mercer Dominion's board.

Nathaniel finally said the name.

“Christopher Mercer.”

And at that exact moment, Julian's phone lit up.

May you like

An incoming call.

CHRISTOPHER MERCER
