Chapter 4 - The Backup Nobody Could Erase

Grant Holloway had served the Mercer family for thirteen years.
Former military intelligence.
Head of estate security.
Arthur Mercer trusted him.
Julian trusted him.
Eleanor apparently trusted him enough to give him access to things Julian was never supposed to discover.
His phone had been disconnected.
His apartment was empty.
His company vehicle was found at the Stamford train station.
Cash withdrawals showed twenty thousand dollars removed the previous evening.
To police, it looked like flight.
To Julian, it looked like guilt.
Until Nathaniel asked one question.
“Who designed the security system?”
“My father.”
“Personally?”
“He obsessed over it.”
Nathaniel smiled without humor.
“Then I doubt the only recording was inside the house.”
Julian remembered.
Three years earlier, Arthur had insisted Mercer Dominion maintain an off-site disaster recovery facility.
Corporate records.
Financial archives.
Executive communications.
Security backups.
Julian called the company’s chief information officer.
“Do we mirror residential security footage?”
Silence.
“Mr. Mercer—”
“Yes or no?”
“For certain executive residences.”
“The Connecticut estate?”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
Julian closed his eyes.
“Preserve everything from today.”
“We already have.”
“Why?”
“Because your father placed a permanent legal hold on that residence before he died.”
Julian opened his eyes.
“What?”
“There’s a standing instruction attached to the property.”
“From when?”
“Twenty-three months ago.”
Days before Arthur died.
Julian drove directly to the corporate security center with Detective Torres.
They watched the footage at 6:42 p.m.
Julian wished afterward that he had never seen it.
Leo was crying near the nursery doorway.
Eleanor appeared.
She lifted him.
At first, almost tenderly.
Then her phone rang.
The caller ID showed:
A. MERCER PRIVATE
Julian stood.
“My father’s initials.”
Torres looked at him.
“He's deceased?”
“Two years.”
On-screen, Eleanor answered.
Listened.
Her face changed.
Then she whispered:
“You were supposed to destroy that.”
Julian’s heart began pounding.
A distorted male voice answered.
The microphone barely captured it.
Torres increased the volume.
Four words became audible.
“...the boy... DNA... arrived.”
Eleanor looked toward Leo.
Then carried him toward the staircase.
Julian’s stomach turned.
“Stop.”
Torres paused the recording.
Julian bent over the table.
For several seconds, he couldn't breathe.
Finally:
“Play it.”
The footage continued.
Eleanor placed Leo near the landing.
She said something the microphone captured perfectly.
“If that test survives, everything belongs to you.”
Leo reached toward her.
Eleanor stared down at him.
“You have no idea what you've taken from me.”
Then she shoved him away with her foot.
Torres stopped the video before impact.
Julian turned away.
Nobody spoke.
After nearly a minute, Torres said:
“This changes the case.”
Julian stared at the frozen frame.
“No.”
He pointed toward Eleanor’s phone.
“That changes the case.”
A dead man had supposedly called his mother minutes before she attacked Leo.
Someone had cloned Arthur Mercer’s private number.
Someone knew the DNA result had arrived.
Someone knew Eleanor wanted it destroyed.
May you like
And someone had warned her.
Meaning Eleanor wasn't working alone.
