Chapter 23 - NATHAN’S PROMISE

Grace finally told the truth.
Nathan had not simply investigated Mercer.
He had once helped him.
Early in their careers, both men believed experimental medicine could change trauma care.
Nathan participated in the first trial.
One patient died.
Nathan covered it up.
Clara sat silently.
Her perfect father disappeared again.
Not because he had been replaced by a monster.
Because he had been human.
Grace handed her Nathan’s journal.
“He regretted it for the rest of his life.”
Clara read.
Nathan had promised Mercer they would never expose the original trial because doing so might destroy treatments derived from the research.
Mercer interpreted that promise as permanent silence.
Nathan later changed his mind.
“He broke his word,” Clara whispered.
Grace nodded.
“To stop something worse.”
Victor sat beside Clara.
She looked at him.
“I spent my whole life turning him into the good man in every story.”
“He was a good man.”
“He covered up a death.”
“Yes.”
Clara stared.
“You can say both?”
“I have to.”
Victor’s voice was quiet.
“If one terrible act erased every good thing a person ever did, you couldn’t love me.”
That landed.
Clara closed the journal.
Nathan’s legacy was no longer purity.
It was choice.
He made a terrible one.
Then spent his life trying to repair it.
Clara understood that better than she wanted to.
The original victim was named Margaret Ellis.
Her family had never learned the truth.
Clara found Margaret’s daughter.
She told her everything.
No cameras.
No lawyers.
No excuses.
The woman cried.
Then asked:
“Why tell me now?”
Clara answered:
“Because your mother shouldn’t disappear just to protect my father’s reputation.”
The family filed suit.
The Hayes Medical Center publicly acknowledged Nathan’s role.
Donors threatened to withdraw.
Victor offered money.
Clara refused.
“We survive honestly or we don’t deserve his name.”
Victor smiled.
Nathan would have liked that.
Then federal investigators called.
Mercer wanted to make a deal.
He would reveal every remaining Orpheus facility.
In exchange, he wanted one meeting.
With Clara.
Alone.
Victor said no.
Clara looked at him.
May you like
He sighed.
“I know.”
