Chapter 14 - THE SECOND DEATH OF NATHAN HAYES

The photograph was genuine.

Clara had it analyzed by three independent experts.

No manipulation.

No altered date.

Nathan Hayes had survived the crash.

For at least three years.

Clara did not sleep.

Victor found her sitting in the kitchen at 4:00 a.m.

“You’re angry at him.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

She looked up.

“You expected me to defend him?”

“No.”

“Being dead would have explained not coming home.”

Victor sat beside her.

“Being alive makes it a choice.”

Clara’s eyes filled.

“I waited for him.”

Victor said nothing.

“He missed graduation. Medical school. Residency.”

Her voice broke.

“I used to call his disconnected number just to hear the recording.”

Victor took her hand.

Clara let him.

“I need to know why.”

They found the answer inside Nathan’s archive.

A cassette labeled:

CLARA — DO NOT PLAY UNLESS MERCER RETURNS.

Nathan’s voice filled the room.

“Sweetheart, if you’re hearing this, I failed to keep Mercer buried.”

Clara closed her eyes.

Nathan explained.

He survived the crash because Thomas Arden found him.

But Nathan discovered Elias believed Clara knew where evidence was hidden.

Returning home would have painted a target on his seventeen-year-old daughter.

So Nathan disappeared.

He entered witness protection outside the official federal system because Mercer controlled contacts inside law enforcement.

For three years, Nathan gathered evidence.

Then the recordings stopped.

The final note contained coordinates.

Montana.

Victor immediately arranged a flight.

Clara shook her head.

“No army.”

“Clara.”

“Four people.”

“Eight.”

“Five.”

“Six.”

“Fine.”

Roman muttered, “Marriage is terrifying.”

The coordinates led to a small cemetery outside Helena.

One grave.

No marker.

Rebecca Arden was already there.

“My father told me.”

Clara stared.

“You knew?”

“Only since yesterday.”

A local sheriff brought archived records.

A John Doe had died there twelve years earlier.

Cancer.

Clara read the medical details.

Pancreatic.

Terminal.

Nathan had survived Elias.

He had survived Mercer.

He had not survived biology.

Clara stood beside the unmarked grave for a long time.

Victor remained twenty feet away.

He knew some grief required company.

Other grief required space.

Finally Clara knelt.

“You idiot.”

Her voice trembled.

“You absolute idiot.”

She touched the frozen earth.

“You should have come home.”

Wind moved through the pine trees.

No answer came.

“I would have rather been scared with you.”

Victor looked away.

Clara cried until there was nothing graceful left in it.

When she finally stood, Victor approached.

“He loved you.”

“I know.”

“That doesn’t mean you can’t be angry.”

“I know.”

She leaned against him.

Behind them, Roman’s phone rang.

His expression changed.

“Victor.”

“What?”

“Mercer Memorial.”

Roman turned the screen.

Fire.

The entire archival wing was burning.

Then another message arrived.

Nathan Hayes Community Medical Center.

Evacuated.

Bomb threat.

Victor’s face became hard.

Mercer had made his move.

Clara wiped her tears.

“No.”

Victor looked at her.

“He doesn’t get to turn hospitals into battlefields again.”

“What do you want to do?”

Clara stared at her father’s grave.

May you like

Then she looked toward the horizon.

“Take me home.”
