Chapter 8 - The Boardroom TrapDaniel called the police while driving toward Emily’s apartment.

By the time he arrived, two patrol cars were outside.

Emily was safe.

Whoever had knocked had disappeared.

But he had left something behind.

A white envelope.

Inside was a single sentence.

9:00 A.M. ENDS THIS.

Daniel read it twice.

Emily stood beside him.

“They're scared.”

“So am I.”

She looked surprised.

Daniel folded the note.

“You admit that?”

“Being rich doesn't cure fear.”

“No. Apparently it just gives fear better tailoring.”

He smiled.

“I'm going to deserve those jokes for a while, aren't I?”

“Absolutely.”

At 6:30 the next morning, Daniel, Emily, Richard, and Elaine met privately.

Emily presented the recovered server logs.

Every fraudulent approval attributed to Richard Mercer had been generated through an administrative credential attached to Vanessa’s executive office.

But there was a problem.

Elaine pointed at the screen.

“This proves the credentials were used. It doesn't prove Vanessa personally used them.”

“Then we need her to admit it,” Daniel said.

Richard shook his head.

“She won't.”

“Not intentionally.”

Emily understood first.

“You want to trap her.”

Daniel nodded.

At 8:55, twelve board members entered the executive conference room on the forty-second floor.

Vanessa sat beside Andrew Pierce.

She wore white.

Perfectly composed.

Richard entered slowly.

Whispers followed him.

Daniel walked behind his father.

Vanessa’s expression changed when she saw him.

Then Emily entered.

That changed everything.

Andrew leaned toward Vanessa.

She whispered something.

The meeting began.

Vanessa spoke for twenty minutes.

She described financial irregularities.

Unauthorized payments.

Leadership failures.

Richard’s health.

She carefully avoided saying Parkinson’s was equivalent to cognitive impairment, but the implication was obvious.

Then she displayed Richard’s electronic signature.

“Millions disappeared under Chairman Mercer’s authorization.”

Daniel watched the board members.

Several looked disturbed.

Vanessa continued.

“For the protection of shareholders and employees, I reluctantly recommend immediate removal.”

Reluctantly.

Daniel almost admired the performance.

The board chair asked Richard if he wished to respond.

Richard stood.

His hand trembled slightly.

Vanessa noticed.

So did everyone else.

Richard placed both hands on the table.

“Yes.”

He looked around.

“I have Parkinson’s disease.”

Silence.

“I was diagnosed six months ago. My doctors have confirmed that my cognitive function remains unaffected.”

He paused.

“But I made another mistake.”

Vanessa watched carefully.

“I stopped paying attention.”

Daniel looked at his father.

Richard continued.

“I built a company large enough that I convinced myself leadership meant reading reports instead of knowing people.”

His voice strengthened.

“I trusted systems more than character.”

Vanessa’s confidence began fading.

Richard sat.

Daniel stood.

“My father did authorize those transactions.”

Vanessa smiled faintly.

Andrew relaxed.

Daniel continued.

“At least, that's what the records were designed to show.”

He connected Emily’s laptop to the display.

Server logs appeared.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“These are the original authentication records.”

Daniel explained the credential trail.

Vanessa interrupted.

“Those records could have been manipulated.”

“Correct.”

She looked surprised.

Daniel nodded.

“Which is why we need something else.”

He turned toward Emily.

She placed a small recorder on the table.

Vanessa stared at it.

Emily pressed play.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

People like you should know your place.

Vanessa’s face reddened.

“That has nothing to do with financial misconduct.”

“No,” Daniel agreed.

“It establishes character.”

Andrew stood.

“This is theater.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Sit down.”

“I don't work for you.”

“No.”

Daniel glanced toward the door.

“But the two federal investigators outside aren't here for me.”

Andrew froze.

Vanessa turned toward him.

For the first time, Daniel saw panic between them.

Then something unexpected happened.

Andrew laughed.

“Federal investigators?”

He looked at Vanessa.

“What did you do?”

Vanessa stared at him.

“What did I do?”

Andrew turned toward the board.

“I had nothing to do with those transactions.”

Vanessa’s face went white.

“You approved them!”

“I approved what you sent me.”

“You created Northbridge!”

The room went silent.

Daniel felt Emily look at him.

Vanessa realized her mistake.

Too late.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Interesting.”

Vanessa said nothing.

“You told me two days ago you knew nothing about Northbridge.”

She stared at him.

Andrew backed away from the table.

“You said nobody could trace it.”

Vanessa turned.

“Shut up.”

“You told me Richard’s authorization would protect us!”

“Andrew!”

“Enough!”

Richard’s voice filled the room.

Everyone stopped.

But Daniel noticed something.

Andrew had said us.

Vanessa had said you created Northbridge.

They were both involved.

Yet neither sounded like the person in control.

Daniel remembered the mysterious caller.

You think this is Andrew Pierce?

There was someone else.

The conference-room door opened.

Elaine entered with two federal agents.

Vanessa stood.

“You cannot detain me without—”

One agent approached.

“We'd like to ask you some questions.”

Andrew immediately pointed at Vanessa.

“She designed the entire thing.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You coward.”

The boardroom dissolved into chaos.

Daniel should have felt victorious.

He didn't.

Because Emily was staring at her laptop.

“Daniel.”

He approached.

“What?”

She showed him a transaction.

A payment from Northbridge Equity.

Not to Vanessa.

Not Andrew.

To another company.

BROOKS FACILITIES MANAGEMENT.

Daniel frowned.

Brooks.

He knew that surname.

Then he remembered.

Samuel Brooks.

The janitor.

The man who had worked at Global Tech for twenty-seven years.

The man who had known Daniel’s mother.

Daniel looked toward the windows.

Far below, the sidewalk was visible.

His shoe stand sat abandoned near the entrance.

And beside it stood Samuel.

Looking up.

Directly toward the forty-second floor.

Daniel’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Samuel’s voice came through.

“You finally started looking in the right direction.”

Daniel went cold.

“Samuel?”

“You wanted to know who people really are.”

Daniel moved toward the window.

Samuel remained below.

“Now you know.”

“What do you want?”

Samuel was silent for a moment.

Then he said:

“Ask your father what happened to my son.”

The call ended.

Daniel turned toward Richard.

His father’s face had gone pale.

May you like

And Daniel immediately understood.

Richard knew exactly what Samuel was talking about.
