Chapter 7 - “You Let Me Believe You Had Nothing”Emily was waiting outside the hospital when Daniel arrived.

She held the photograph.

Daniel stopped several feet away.

Neither spoke.

Finally Emily lifted it.

“You're Daniel Mercer.”

“Yes.”

“Richard Mercer’s son.”

“Yes.”

“The Richard Mercer.”

Daniel nodded.

Emily laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Billionaire Richard Mercer.”

“Yes.”

She stared at his expensive car.

Then his clean shirt.

Then his face.

“You let me buy you lunch.”

Daniel almost smiled, but her expression stopped him.

“Emily—”

“I told you I couldn't afford my mother’s treatment.”

“I know.”

“I told you I was terrified of losing my insurance.”

“I know.”

“And the entire time you were what? Playing poor?”

“No.”

“That is exactly what you were doing.”

Daniel absorbed it.

She was right.

“I was testing the company.”

“And me?”

“No.”

“How would I know?”

“You weren't part of it.”

“I sat beside you and told you things I wouldn't have told Daniel Mercer.”

“That's why I didn't tell you.”

Emily stared at him.

“Do you hear yourself?”

Daniel fell silent.

She wiped tears from her eyes.

“You had the luxury of pretending to be powerless.”

That sentence hit harder than anything Vanessa had said.

Emily continued.

“When you got tired, you could go home. When you got hungry, you could buy a restaurant. When someone humiliated you, you knew that somewhere underneath those dirty clothes you were still the billionaire’s son.”

Daniel looked down.

“For people like me, Daniel, there isn't a mansion waiting when the experiment ends.”

“I know.”

“No. You don't.”

He nodded slowly.

“You're right.”

That stopped her.

He did not defend himself.

“I wanted to understand something I had never experienced. But pretending to have no power isn't the same as actually having none.”

Emily’s anger softened slightly.

“I should have told you sooner.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at the photograph.

“Did you pay Mom’s bill?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

“I don't know.”

Daniel explained the investigation.

Andrew.

Vanessa.

The fraudulent authorizations.

The mysterious caller.

By the time he finished, Emily’s anger had been replaced by concern.

“You think someone besides Vanessa and Andrew is involved.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Emily handed him the photograph.

“Then maybe we should figure it out.”

Daniel looked at her.

“We?”

“I'm still angry.”

“Understandably.”

“I might remain angry for a while.”

“Also understandable.”

“But they broke into my apartment and threatened my mother.”

Her expression hardened.

“I want them caught.”

For the first time that day, Daniel smiled.

They returned to Emily’s backup files.

For six hours they traced payments.

At 9:17 p.m., Emily noticed a pattern.

“Look.”

Daniel leaned closer.

The fraudulent vendors changed names every six months.

But their bank routing information repeatedly connected to the same financial institution in Delaware.

Emily searched corporate records.

One holding company appeared repeatedly.

Northbridge Equity Partners.

Daniel knew the name.

His stomach tightened.

“What?”

“My father almost sold them twenty percent of Global Tech last year.”

“Why didn't he?”

“Someone convinced him not to.”

“Who?”

Daniel tried to remember.

Then he did.

“Andrew.”

Emily frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.”

Exactly.

If Andrew were stealing money, why stop a transaction with a company connected to the theft?

Unless Andrew wasn't the person controlling Northbridge.

Daniel called Elaine.

She answered immediately.

“I need everything you have on Northbridge Equity.”

“Why?”

“Just find it.”

Twenty minutes later she called back.

“Daniel.”

Her voice sounded wrong.

“What?”

“Northbridge has been buying Global Tech shares through intermediaries.”

“How much?”

“Almost eight percent.”

Daniel stood.

“That's impossible.”

“It was spread across several entities.”

“Who controls them?”

“We're tracing it.”

Emily watched him.

Daniel put the call on speaker.

Elaine continued.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“Vanessa submitted an emergency board proposal twenty minutes ago.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“For what?”

“To remove your father as chairman.”

Silence.

“On what grounds?”

“Cognitive incapacity and financial misconduct.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

The fraudulent signatures.

His father’s authorizations.

Suddenly the structure became visible.

The stolen money had never been only about money.

Someone had used Richard’s electronic signature to approve fraudulent transactions.

Then created a paper trail making him responsible.

And now they intended to use that evidence to remove him.

“When’s the vote?”

“Tomorrow morning.”

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

Emily stood.

“What are you doing?”

“Stopping it.”

Elaine interrupted.

“Daniel, there's more.”

He froze.

“What?”

“The board package includes medical records.”

“Whose?”

“Your father’s.”

Daniel felt cold.

“What medical records?”

Elaine hesitated.

“Richard was diagnosed with early-stage Parkinson’s six months ago.”

Daniel stopped moving.

He had not known.

Emily touched his arm.

Elaine continued.

“The symptoms are mild. His doctors say his cognitive function is completely normal. But Vanessa is using the diagnosis to suggest he is no longer competent.”

Daniel could barely speak.

“My father hid this from me?”

“Apparently.”

He ended the call.

For several seconds, he stared at nothing.

Emily spoke softly.

“Daniel.”

“He should have told me.”

“Yes.”

“I’m his son.”

“I know.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Apparently everyone in my life has decided secrets are a form of protection.”

Emily raised an eyebrow.

He looked at her.

“Fair.”

Despite herself, she smiled.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A message from his father.

Come home. Now.

Daniel drove to the estate.

The front door was open.

He entered.

“Dad?”

No answer.

The library was empty.

A glass lay shattered beside the desk.

Daniel’s pulse jumped.

“Dad!”

He heard movement upstairs.

He ran.

Richard was sitting on the floor beside his bedroom door.

Daniel dropped beside him.

“Dad!”

“I’m fine.”

“You're not fine.”

Richard’s right hand trembled.

Daniel stared at it.

His father saw the realization.

“So you know.”

Daniel helped him sit.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Richard looked away.

“Because I didn't want my son looking at me the way you're looking at me now.”

“How am I looking at you?”

“Like I'm disappearing.”

Daniel’s anger vanished.

He sat beside his father.

“You're not.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“Vanessa called.”

Daniel became still.

“What did she say?”

“She wants me to resign before tomorrow’s meeting.”

“Or?”

Richard looked at him.

“She releases evidence showing I stole from my own charity programs.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You didn't.”

“Can you prove that by nine tomorrow morning?”

Daniel did not answer.

Richard gave a tired smile.

“That's what I thought.”

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Emily.

He answered.

Her voice was breathless.

“Daniel, I found something.”

“What?”

“The original authorization logs.”

He stood.

“And?”

“The signatures weren't submitted from your father’s account.”

Daniel’s heart began pounding.

“Whose account?”

Emily paused.

“Vanessa’s.”

Daniel looked at his father.

But Emily wasn't finished.

“And Daniel?”

“Yes?”

“Someone just tried to delete the files remotely.”

“Disconnect everything.”

“I already did.”

“Good.”

There was a knock at Emily’s apartment door.

She stopped speaking.

Daniel heard it through the phone.

Three slow knocks.

“Emily?”

Another knock.

Then a man’s voice.

“Ms. Carter?”

Daniel stood.

“Don't open it.”

The voice came again.

“We know you have the files.”

May you like

Emily whispered:

“Daniel... they found me.”
