Chapter 9 - The Last Ghost

Rachel recognized the handwriting.
Not because she had seen it recently.
Because she had seen it inside her mother's storage boxes.
The letters.
Daniel's old letters to Elizabeth.
Rachel ran upstairs and returned carrying one.
She placed both beside each other.
Daniel's face changed.
“No.”
Caleb stared.
“The handwriting is yours.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I didn't send that.”
Rachel believed him.
Then she noticed something.
Daniel's old letter had not actually been written by Daniel.
Elizabeth had labeled it:
Message delivered from Daniel through Thomas.
“Who's Thomas?”
Daniel sat down.
“Thomas Vane.”
Russell's younger brother.
Caleb looked stunned.
“He died.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“So did I.”
Thomas Vane had supposedly died overseas 6 years earlier.
No body had been returned.
Rachel followed the money.
Again.
A security company receiving D.M. Holdings funds had continued paying a consultant called T. Vale.
Not Vane.
Vale.
One letter different.
The address led to a suburban property outside Chicago.
Federal investigators were notified.
Caleb was furious when Rachel insisted on going.
“I am not locking myself in an apartment while men decide what happens to my family.”
“You were shot last time.”
“And you were poisoned.”
“Drugged.”
“Don't become technical when I'm winning.”
Caleb stared at her.
Then kissed her forehead.
“I hate you.”
“No, you don't.”
“No.”
He smiled faintly.
“I really don't.”
Thomas was found before dawn.
He surrendered without resistance.
That surprised everyone.
Then he asked to speak with Rachel.
Alone.
Caleb refused.
Rachel accepted.
They compromised with Caleb behind mirrored glass.
Thomas looked older than Russell.
Tired.
“What do you want?”
Rachel asked.
“To finish something.”
Thomas revealed that Russell's conspiracy had begun far earlier than Daniel knew.
Their father had worked for Caleb's father.
He believed the Marsh family destroyed him.
Russell wanted power.
Thomas wanted revenge.
But years earlier, Thomas changed his mind.
He secretly helped Daniel keep Lucy's medical funding active.
“You?”
Rachel whispered.
“Daniel signed the money. I made sure Russell couldn't stop it.”
“Why?”
Thomas looked through the glass toward where Caleb stood unseen.
“Because eventually you realize revenge doesn't resurrect anyone.”
He had sent the photograph as a warning.
One final account remained.
Russell had arranged payments to assassinate Caleb after his trial.
Thomas provided the evidence.
The threat ended.
Not with another gunfight.
With records.
Signatures.
Numbers.
The things Rachel understood better than any of them.
Russell received additional charges.
His remaining network collapsed.
Thomas entered protective custody after cooperating.
When Rachel left the federal building, Caleb waited outside.
Snow fell softly over Chicago.
“It’s over,” she said.
Caleb looked toward the skyline.
“For the first time, I think it might be.”
Rachel slipped her hand into his.
“What are you going to do now that nobody is trying to kill you?”
“I've been thinking.”
“That’s dangerous.”
He ignored her.
“I sold the club.”
Rachel stopped.
“The club?”
“The one where you worked.”
“Why?”
“I hated the service.”
She punched his arm.
Caleb smiled.
“The real reason?”
He looked at her.
“Because I want to build something that doesn't require people to fear me.”
Rachel squeezed his hand.
“That sounds suspiciously healthy.”
“Don't tell anyone.”
They walked toward the car.
Lucy and Daniel waited inside.
Lucy pressed her face against the window and made exaggerated kissing motions.
Rachel laughed.
Caleb sighed.
“I donated a kidney to that child.”
“And?”
“Nothing. Just reconsidering the investment.”
They entered the car.
For the first time, Caleb sat beside his brother without silence feeling hostile.
Daniel looked at him.
“Dinner Sunday?”
Caleb considered.
“Yes.”
A tiny word.
A large forgiveness.
Not complete.
But beginning.
As the car crossed the river, Caleb looked at Rachel.
There were things he still had not said.
Rachel could tell.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Caleb.”
“Sunday.”
“What happens Sunday?”
He looked away.
Lucy giggled.
Daniel suddenly became fascinated by the window.
Rachel narrowed her eyes.
“What did you three do?”
May you like
Nobody answered.
And for once, the secret surrounding Caleb Marsh did not frighten her.
