Chapter 4 - The Child Caleb Never Knew

Rachel slapped Caleb.

The sound echoed through the storage unit.

He did not move.

Rachel immediately regretted it, but anger overwhelmed fear.

“No.”

Caleb's cheek reddened.

“You think I wanted this?”

“My mother would have told me.”

“Maybe she was protecting Lucy.”

“From you?”

Caleb met her eyes.

“Probably.”

That answer silenced her.

Caleb had never pretended to be innocent.

They searched until sunrise.

A bundle of letters finally gave them the truth.

Daniel Marsh had met Elizabeth Brennan while hiding from Russell's surveillance. Elizabeth helped him after he was injured.

They fell in love.

But Elizabeth was married.

Rachel’s father knew.

The relationship had happened during a separation Rachel had been too young to understand. When Elizabeth discovered she was pregnant, she and her husband reconciled. He chose to raise Lucy as his daughter.

Daniel accepted it under one condition.

Lucy must never enter his dangerous world.

Then Daniel discovered Russell stealing from Caleb.

Before Daniel could expose him, he disappeared.

Elizabeth believed he had been killed.

Years later, an anonymous foundation began paying Lucy's medical expenses.

Rachel cried while reading her mother's final letter.

Her father had known Lucy wasn't biologically his.

He loved her anyway.

That mattered more than blood.

Caleb sat opposite Rachel.

“So Lucy is my niece.”

Rachel wiped her face.

“She’s my sister.”

“I didn't say she wasn't.”

“She stays out of your world.”

Caleb's expression changed.

“You think I would bring her into it?”

“I don't know what you would do.”

Caleb leaned forward.

“I lost Daniel because I failed to protect him. I will not lose his daughter.”

The words carried no threat.

They carried a promise.

For the first time, Rachel saw what Caleb might have been before grief hollowed him out.

They returned home.

Lucy was drawing at the kitchen table under Marcus's supervision.

She held up a picture.

Three stick figures.

Rachel.

Lucy.

Caleb.

Caleb stared at it.

“Why am I that tall?”

Lucy shrugged. “Because you're scary.”

Rachel almost laughed.

Lucy pointed to a tiny smile on Caleb's stick figure.

“But not all the time.”

Caleb looked away.

That afternoon, Rachel discovered another problem.

Russell had frozen Caleb's legitimate accounts and circulated a story that Caleb was suffering a psychiatric breakdown after an overdose.

News outlets repeated it.

The council meeting had been moved forward.

They had 48 hours.

Caleb needed Daniel.

Rachel needed proof.

And Lucy needed dialysis in 2 days.

Then the hospital called.

Lucy’s treatment authorization had been canceled.

Rachel understood immediately.

Russell.

She nearly dropped the phone.

Caleb heard everything.

“How much?”

“No.”

“How much, Rachel?”

“That's not the point.”

“How much?”

She told him.

Caleb reached for his phone.

She grabbed his wrist.

“Your accounts are frozen.”

“I have cash.”

“I don't want your money.”

Caleb stared at her.

“This isn't charity.”

“It feels like it.”

His voice lowered.

“Rachel, that child is my family.”

“So am I.”

“Yes.”

The answer came instantly.

Rachel froze.

Caleb seemed equally surprised.

He released his wrist from her hand but did not step away.

“I meant—”

“I know.”

Neither actually knew.

Marcus interrupted.

They had located the Lake Geneva estate.

The plan was simple.

Rachel hated simple plans because they usually concealed complicated disasters.

Marcus would create a security diversion.

Caleb and Rachel would enter through the service wing.

“I'm coming,” Rachel said.

“No.”

Caleb's refusal was immediate.

“You need someone who recognizes Daniel.”

“I recognize my brother.”

“After 9 years?”

Caleb said nothing.

“And you need someone Russell doesn't expect.”

“No.”

Rachel stepped closer.

“You told me my life stopped belonging only to me when I saved you.”

Caleb's eyes narrowed.

“I was drugged.”

“Still counts.”

Despite himself, his mouth almost smiled.

That night they drove north.

The estate overlooked the lake behind iron gates.

Marcus disabled the outer cameras.

Rachel and Caleb entered through a greenhouse.

Inside, everything was silent.

Too silent.

They found medical equipment upstairs.

An empty bed.

Restraints.

Caleb touched one.

His hands began trembling.

Rachel covered his hand with hers.

“Caleb.”

Footsteps sounded.

He pulled Rachel behind him.

A thin man appeared in the doorway.

Gray streaked his hair. A scar crossed his jaw. One leg dragged slightly.

Caleb stopped breathing.

The stranger stared at him.

For several seconds, neither man moved.

Then the stranger whispered:

“Cal?”

Caleb's knees nearly failed.

“Daniel.”

The brothers crossed the room.

Caleb caught him before he fell.

Nine years of grief collapsed in a single embrace.

Rachel turned away, crying.

Then Daniel saw her.

His expression changed.

“Elizabeth?”

Rachel shook her head.

“I'm Rachel.”

Daniel stared.

“Lucy?”

“She’s alive.”

Daniel began sobbing.

“My daughter?”

Rachel nodded.

“Your daughter is alive.”

Before another word could be spoken, red lights illuminated the windows.

Marcus shouted through Caleb's earpiece.

“Move! Russell knew!”

Daniel grabbed Caleb's coat.

“No. Listen to me.”

“What?”

Daniel looked toward Rachel.

“He doesn't want the organization.”

Gunfire erupted downstairs.

May you like

Daniel finished:

“He wants Lucy.”
