Chapter 7 - THE FAMILY THAT BUILT THE LIE

By dawn, the old estate was surrounded by police, firefighters, and Moretti security.

Dominic had spent the night in a private hospital room beside Isabella, who was receiving treatment for exhaustion and a dangerously irregular heartbeat. Lily slept curled against her mother's side, one hand wrapped around Isabella's fingers.

Dominic sat by the window, staring at the city beyond the glass.

He had spent years believing his family was protected by loyalty. Now he wondered whether loyalty had been the very weapon used against him.

Michael arrived at nine in the morning.

He entered the room wearing a dark overcoat, carrying a paper bag from a bakery Lily had once mentioned. His expression was carefully arranged into concern.

“Dominic. I heard about the fire. Are you all right?”

Dominic didn't stand.

“Where were you last night?”

Michael's eyes moved toward Isabella, then Lily.

“Home. Why?”

“Your car was seen leaving the estate.”

“Lots of people use that road.”

“Your license plate was recorded.”

Michael sighed as if Dominic were being unreasonable.

“Someone is trying to turn us against each other. Don't let this become another one of Vanessa's games.”

Dominic rose.

“Funny. You knew about Vanessa before I mentioned her.”

Michael's face changed, just slightly.

“Everyone knows you're engaged to her.”

“Not anymore.”

The words landed hard.

Michael glanced at Isabella.

“So it's true. She's alive.”

Isabella's eyes narrowed.

“You knew I survived.”

He didn't answer.

Dominic stepped closer.

“Tell me why.”

Michael lowered his voice.

“Because Victor was protecting the family.”

“By making me believe the woman I loved was dead?”

“By keeping you alive. You were reckless then. You wanted to dismantle everything your father built. Victor believed you would destroy the family if you discovered what was happening.”

“What was happening?”

Michael looked toward the door.

“Not here.”

“That's what everyone keeps saying. Not here. Not now. Not yet. I'm finished waiting.”

Michael's composure cracked.

“Victor was stealing money, yes. But he wasn't doing it alone. Your father knew more than he admitted. Vanessa helped manage the records. I helped keep the companies running. We all told ourselves it was temporary.”

Dominic felt sick.

“You let me mourn Isabella.”

Michael's voice sharpened.

“Victor said she would be safer if you believed she was dead. He promised she would receive money and medical care. I didn't know she was living in poverty.”

Isabella pushed herself upright.

“You knew enough to stop asking questions.”

Michael looked at her, shame flickering across his face.

“I was twenty-six. I thought I could keep the worst from happening.”

“You kept the worst from becoming inconvenient.”

The words silenced him.

Dominic took out the photograph from the ballroom.

“Why did Vanessa tell Isabella I'd abandoned her?”

Michael's jaw tightened.

“Because she wanted you. She had wanted you long before the engagement. Victor promised her she could marry into the family if she helped remove Isabella from your life.”

“And you?”

“I thought once the accounts were settled, we'd tell you the truth.”

“Seven years later?”

Michael lowered his eyes.

Before Dominic could respond, Marcus entered with a tablet.

“We recovered the audio from Room Seventeen. The specialist isolated the voices.”

He played a short clip.

Victor's voice came through first. Then Vanessa's.

Finally, another man spoke.

A voice Dominic recognized immediately.

His father's.

Antonio said, “If Dominic finds out, he'll never forgive me.”

Dominic went still.

Michael closed his eyes.

Isabella whispered, “No.”

Marcus stopped the recording.

Dominic's mind raced. Had his father helped Victor? Had he known Isabella was alive? Had the man who had raised him allowed his family to be destroyed to protect the Moretti name?

He left the hospital without saying a word.

At the mansion, Antonio was waiting in his study.

Dominic placed the tablet on the desk and played the recording.

His father listened with his eyes shut.

When it ended, Antonio didn't deny his voice.

“Tell me,” Dominic said. “What did you do?”

Antonio's shoulders sagged.

“I made a bargain.”

“With Victor?”

“With the people who financed him. I believed I could recover the money without exposing the family. When Isabella discovered the accounts, I ordered her to bring the evidence to me.”

“But she never reached you.”

“No.”

“Did you know she survived the crash?”

Antonio's eyes filled.

“I was told she died.”

Dominic leaned forward.

“That's not what I asked.”

Antonio looked at his son.

For a long moment, the old man seemed unable to speak.

Then he whispered, “I received a letter from her three months after the crash.”

Dominic's blood turned to ice.

“What did it say?”

Antonio reached into a drawer and removed a folded envelope, its edges yellowed with age.

“I never answered.”

Dominic took it.

The letter was short. Isabella had written that she was alive, that she had given birth to a daughter, and that she was afraid of the people hunting her.

At the bottom, she had added one sentence.

If you cannot protect me, please protect my child.

Dominic looked up.

“Why didn't you help her?”

Antonio's voice broke.

“Because Victor told me that if I did, he would destroy you.”

“And you believed him.”

“I was a coward.”

For the first time, Dominic saw his father not as a legend or a patriarch, but as a frightened old man who had chosen his reputation over the people he loved.

Dominic turned toward the door.

“Where are you going?” Antonio asked.

“To bring my daughter home.”

“And Vanessa?”

Dominic paused.

“She's going to tell me everything.”

His phone rang before he reached the hallway.

Vanessa's number appeared on the screen.

He answered.

Her voice was shaking.

“Dominic, I need to see you.”

“Why?”

“Because Michael wasn't the only one who helped Victor.”

A sharp breath.

“There's someone else. Someone you trust more than anyone.”

The line went dead.

Then a message arrived with a photograph attached.

It showed Lily sleeping beside Isabella in the hospital.

A red circle had been drawn around the little girl's face.
