Chapter 1 - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO PLAYED THE DEAD WOMAN’S SONG

"“PLEASE, SIR… CAN I PLAY YOUR PIANO FOR ONE PLATE OF FOOD?”
A barefoot little girl was humiliated by wealthy guests when she begged to play a billionaire's piano in exchange for dinner. But when she played a secret melody belonging to the woman he believed had died years ago, the most feared man in New York fell to his knees. And the photograph hidden inside her torn dress revealed a betrayal nobody saw coming.
My name is Lily. I'm seven years old, and that night, I was so hungry my stomach hurt every time I moved.
I'd wandered into a beautiful Manhattan ballroom filled with sparkling chandeliers, fancy dresses, and more food than I'd ever seen.
But nobody offered me a bite.
Instead, they stared at my bare feet and ripped princess dress.
“Please,” I whispered, pointing toward the grand piano. “Could I play a song for some chicken?”
A woman wearing a gold necklace laughed.
“Honey, that piano is worth more than everything your family owns.”
I looked at her carefully.
“Then it must sound really beautiful.”
Everyone laughed again.
Except one man.
He was enormous, dressed in black, with cold eyes that made everyone around him nervous.
I walked over and tugged his sleeve.
“Excuse me, Mr. Grumpy. Can I play?”
He stared at me.
Then he nodded.
“Go ahead.”
I climbed onto the bench, closed my eyes, and remembered Mommy's fingers guiding mine across our old keyboard.
I began playing our special song.
The room grew quiet.
I didn't notice the man's glass slipping from his hand until it shattered against the marble floor.
Then he shouted.
“STOP!”
My fingers froze.
“Did I do something wrong?”
He hurried toward me and knelt beside the bench.
“Little girl,” he whispered, his face suddenly pale. “Who taught you that melody?”
“My mommy.”
His breathing changed.
“What's her name?”
“Isabella.”
He grabbed the edge of the piano as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.
“Isabella what?”
“Isabella Bennett.”
His eyes filled with tears.
I didn't understand why.
So I reached into my pocket and pulled out the photograph Mommy always told me to protect.
“Look! That's her.”
He took it with shaking hands.
In the picture, Mommy was smiling beside this very piano.
And standing next to her was the man kneeling before me.
He covered his mouth.
“Where did you get this?”
“Mommy gave it to me.”
He stared at me.
“Your mother is alive?”
I nodded.
“Of course. But she's really sick.”
His face crumpled.
Then I remembered something important.
“Mommy said if I ever found the man in this picture, I should tell him something.”
He gripped my little hands.
“What, sweetheart?”
I leaned closer.
“She said you didn't abandon us.”
His eyes widened.
“Us?”
I swallowed.
“She said someone made you believe we were both dead.”
Behind him, the woman in the gold necklace suddenly dropped her champagne glass.
And when I pointed at her, the billionaire stopped breathing.
May you like
“That's the lady who told Mommy you'd never come looking for us.”
