Chapter 3 - The Dead Man’s Daughter

Declan Gallagher owned a townhouse overlooking the river, though "townhouse" was an absurdly polite word for a fortress with limestone walls, bullet-resistant windows, and enough cameras to make a federal building jealous.

Mave hated it immediately.

She hated the armed guards.

She hated the locked gates.

Most of all, she hated that Brutus followed her inside instead of Declan.

"Traitor," Declan muttered.

Mave glanced down.

Brutus pressed against her knee.

"Maybe he has standards."

Scar-Eyebrow coughed to hide a laugh.

Declan looked at him.

"Something funny, Finn?"

"No."

So Scar-Eyebrow had a name.

Finn Mercer.

Mave filed it away.

Declan's men had already moved her mother from St. Vincent's Hospital to a private medical facility under guard. Mave had protested until Declan showed her security footage of a man in scrubs entering her mother's floor twenty minutes after they received the photograph.

The man had disappeared when he saw Gallagher's people.

That ended the argument.

For now.

Mave sat at Declan's kitchen island while Finn placed the electronic device from Brutus's collar inside a clear evidence bag.

A second man entered.

"Vet's here."

Dr. Hannah Price examined Brutus while Mave remained beside him.

The dog refused to let anyone else near his neck.

Blood tests confirmed a sedative mixed with a stimulant.

Hannah frowned at the results.

"This combination doesn't make sense medically."

"It wasn't medical," Mave said.

"No. It was designed to create disorientation, panic, and aggression."

Declan leaned against the counter.

"Could it kill him?"

"At a higher dose."

His jaw flexed.

Mave noticed.

For all the stories surrounding Declan Gallagher, his reaction to that possibility was painfully ordinary.

He loved his dog.

Hannah left with instructions to call immediately when the complete toxicology report returned.

Silence followed.

Then Declan placed an old photograph on the counter.

Mave stared at it.

Her father.

Elias Hart.

Younger.

Smiling.

Beside him stood Declan's father, Patrick Gallagher.

And between them sat a black German shepherd wearing a tactical harness.

Mave looked up.

"Where did you get this?"

"My father's safe."

"You knew my dad?"

"No. I knew his name."

Declan pulled out another photograph.

This one showed six men outside a warehouse.

Elias Hart.

Patrick Gallagher.

Caleb Voss.

Three others Mave didn't recognize.

Written on the back were two words.

PROJECT CERBERUS.

Mave's skin prickled.

"My father never mentioned this."

"Mine didn't either."

"Convenient."

Declan's expression tightened.

"You think I drugged my own dog and staged an attack in a restaurant?"

"I think men like you call terrible things strategy."

Finn shifted uncomfortably.

Declan, surprisingly, did not become angry.

"Fair."

That answer unsettled her more.

Mave picked up the photograph.

"My father died when I was seventeen."

"Car accident."

She looked at him sharply.

"How do you know?"

"Because Patrick Gallagher died three weeks later."

Silence.

Declan continued.

"Brake failure."

Mave stared.

"My father's car went through a barrier because the brakes failed."

"I know."

"And you never thought that was strange?"

"I was twenty-four and inheriting a war. I thought everything was strange."

Mave's fingers trembled around the photograph.

"What was Cerberus?"

"We're finding out."

A laptop opened on the counter.

Finn displayed records recovered from an encrypted drive belonging to Patrick Gallagher.

The files were incomplete.

Most had been deleted.

But one document remained.

CERBERUS BEHAVIORAL SECURITY PROGRAM.

The project had trained protection dogs to recognize specific scents, commands, routes, and individuals. Nothing extraordinary at first.

Then Mave saw her father's notes.

Dogs could be trained to locate hidden compartments.

Recognize chemical markers.

Respond to coded verbal sequences.

Carry information without understanding it.

Mave frowned.

"Carry information?"

Finn zoomed in.

"Your father designed a sequence of commands. Each behavior represented a number."

Declan understood first.

"A living cipher."

Mave felt sick.

Brutus was asleep near her feet.

"That's insane."

Finn nodded.

"Also clever. You can't hack a dog's memory."

Declan looked at Brutus.

"Patrick bought him as a puppy eight years ago."

Mave's head snapped up.

"My father died nine years ago."

"Exactly."

A chill crawled down her arms.

Someone had continued Elias Hart's work.

Someone who knew the commands.

Someone who had access to Brutus.

Caleb.

Mave pushed away from the island.

"I want to see my mother."

Declan nodded.

"No argument?"

"She's your mother."

Twenty minutes later they were inside an armored SUV.

Brutus occupied nearly the entire rear bench between them.

Rain streaked the windows.

Mave kept staring outside.

Declan finally spoke.

"You recognized Voss instantly."

"He was my father's partner."

"You liked him?"

"I was a kid."

"That's not an answer."

She turned.

"He used to bring me birthday presents. He taught me to drive. When Dad worked late, Caleb stayed for dinner."

"And after your father died?"

"He disappeared."

"Until tonight."

Mave nodded.

Declan's gaze fell to her hands.

She had twisted them together so tightly her knuckles were white.

"Your mother know about Cerberus?"

"No."

"You sure?"

Mave started to answer.

Then stopped.

There was one memory.

Her mother burning boxes in the backyard three days after Elias's funeral.

Mave had asked what they were.

"Things that should have died with your father."

At the time, grief had made everything strange.

Now the sentence returned with terrible clarity.

When they arrived at the private clinic, Mave hurried toward her mother's room.

Two Gallagher guards stood outside.

Inside, Evelyn Hart slept beneath a thin blanket.

Mave sat beside her.

"Mom."

Evelyn stirred.

Her eyes opened.

"Mave?"

"I'm here."

Relief flooded her face.

Then she saw Declan standing in the doorway.

Every trace of weakness vanished.

Evelyn sat upright.

"You."

Declan stopped.

"You know me?"

"I know exactly who you are."

Mave looked between them.

"Mom?"

Evelyn grabbed her daughter's wrist.

"Listen to me. You need to leave him."

"Why?"

"Because Gallaghers destroy everything they touch."

Declan's expression hardened.

"My father worked with your husband."

"I know what Patrick Gallagher did."

Mave leaned closer.

"What did he do?"

Evelyn's eyes filled with fear.

"He got your father killed."

Silence swallowed the room.

Declan's face became stone.

Mave slowly released her mother's hand.

"What?"

"Your father discovered Cerberus wasn't being used for security anymore. Someone was using his system to move information—bank accounts, witness identities, police names. Elias wanted out."

"Who?"

Evelyn looked toward Declan.

"Patrick Gallagher."

Declan shook his head.

"My father was murdered too."

"Because somebody cleaned up both sides."

Mave stared at her mother.

"Caleb?"

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"I thought so."

"Thought?"

"Until three months ago."

She reached toward the bedside drawer.

Inside was an envelope.

She handed it to Mave.

"I received this after my diagnosis."

Mave opened it.

One sentence had been typed on white paper.

ELIAS IS ALIVE.

Mave stopped breathing.

Declan stepped closer.

"What?"

Evelyn looked at her daughter.

"That's why the bills suddenly became impossible, sweetheart."

Mave frowned.

"The bills?"

"I refused their offer."

"What offer?"

"Treatment. Everything paid. Every debt erased."

May you like

Evelyn began crying.

"All they wanted in exchange was you."
