Chapter 9 - The Betrayal That Started Before My Marriage

I listened to the recording six times.

Each time, the same words made my skin crawl.

Victor Moretti's voice was unmistakable.

“The Bennett inheritance depends on a direct descendant. If Claire has a child, the trust becomes much harder to challenge.”

A woman answered.

“Then make sure the marriage survives long enough.”

Victor laughed.

“Alexander is sentimental. He'll do whatever he thinks protects his family.”

The recording ended.

I sat motionless.

Daniel watched me carefully.

“Claire?”

I looked up.

“My father.”

“What about him?”

“He created the Bennett family trust before I married Alexander.”

Daniel nodded.

“And he added provisions protecting future descendants.”

“Yes.”

“Did Alexander know the details?”

“Only some.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Then someone may have been trying to manipulate the trust through your marriage.”

I felt sick.

For years, I had believed my marriage was built on love.

Now I wondered whether someone had been calculating its financial value from the beginning.

Daniel continued.

“We've identified the woman on the recording.”

I held my breath.

“Who?”

“Margaret Vale.”

The name meant nothing.

Then he added, “She worked as a consultant for your father's estate planning firm.”

I stared at him.

“My father died three years ago.”

“I know.”

“Was she involved in his trust?”

“Yes.”

I stood so quickly my chair scraped the floor.

“Then she had access to everything.”

“Potentially.”

“Where is she now?”

Daniel hesitated.

“That's the problem.”

“What problem?”

“Margaret Vale disappeared fourteen months ago.”

I stared at him.

“Disappeared?”

“Her last known address was vacated. Her professional license lapsed. Her bank accounts became inactive.”

“Is she dead?”

“We don't know.”

I sank back into the chair.

The conspiracy was larger than Victor.

Larger than Alexander.

And possibly older than my marriage.

That afternoon, I received an unexpected visitor.

Alexander.

He stood outside my house without security, without his usual confidence.

He looked thinner.

Older.

“Daniel said you found something,” he said.

I let him into the study.

He saw the recording transcript on the desk.

His face changed.

“Where did you get this?”

“Ethan.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

“Victor gave him the drive?”

“Yes.”

He sat down heavily.

“Then Victor was planning this for years.”

I watched him.

“Did you know my inheritance could be affected by having a child?”

He looked genuinely confused.

“What?”

“Answer me.”

“No.”

I placed the trust documents in front of him.

He read them slowly.

Then looked up.

“Claire, I never married you for money.”

“I know you didn't need mine.”

“That isn't what I said.”

He stood.

“I married you because you were the only person who ever looked at me and saw something other than the Moretti name.”

My throat tightened.

He continued.

“I loved you before I knew what your family owned. I loved you when you argued with me over dinner. I loved you when you refused to let me buy your affection.”

His voice broke.

“And I loved you when you told me we were having a baby.”

I looked away.

“Then why did you let Olivia come between us?”

Alexander swallowed.

“Because I thought I could protect everyone without telling anyone the truth.”

“And you protected everyone except me.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

For a long moment, silence filled the room.

Then he said, “I can't undo what I did.”

“No.”

“But I can stop making excuses.”

I looked at him.

“Then help Daniel find Margaret Vale.”

“I will.”

“And cooperate fully with the investigators.”

“I already am.”

“And don't ask me to come back.”

He closed his eyes.

“I won't.”

For the first time, I believed him.

Not because I trusted him again.

Because he finally seemed to understand that loving someone didn't give him the right to control their choices.

Three weeks later, federal investigators charged Victor Moretti with multiple financial crimes.

The evidence from Ethan's drive helped establish that Victor had directed the transfers and manipulated executive credentials.

Alexander was not charged, although the investigation into his corporate oversight continued.

The stolen Bennett funds became the subject of recovery proceedings.

And Olivia entered a cooperation agreement with prosecutors.

For a moment, it seemed the nightmare might finally be ending.

Then Daniel called.

“Claire, we found Margaret Vale.”

I gripped the phone.

“Where?”

“In a private care facility outside Milwaukee.”

“Is she alive?”

“Yes.”

“Can she speak?”

Daniel hesitated.

“She can.”

I closed my eyes.

“Then arrange a meeting.”

A long silence followed.

“Claire,” he said quietly, “there's something you should know before you see her.”

May you like

“What?”

“Margaret says your father didn't die of natural causes.”
