Chapter 1 - The $300,000 Betrayal

My husband spent $300,000 on the diamond necklace he had promised me for months, then called his beautiful assistant onto the stage and fastened it around her neck in front of hundreds of people. I was six months pregnant with his child, and he actually expected me to smile through the humiliation. Instead, I took the microphone, announced our divorce, and told him, “Don’t expect to be a father to this baby anymore.”

My name is Claire Bennett Moretti, and I had been married to Alexander Moretti for five years. To the rest of Chicago, Alexander was a powerful, feared man with money, influence, and a business empire large enough to make entire rooms go silent when he entered.

To me, he had once simply been my husband.

When I found out I was pregnant, Alexander held me tightly and placed his hand against my stomach.

“I’ll protect both of you,” he promised.

I believed him.

Then Olivia Hayes began taking up more and more space in our marriage.

She was Alexander’s young assistant, beautiful, polished, and always somehow in need of his attention. Her calls interrupted our dinners. He left the house when she needed him. He rented her a luxury apartment and bought her expensive gifts.

Whenever I questioned him, Alexander dismissed me.

“She’s just my assistant, Claire.”

I kept trying to believe that.

Then came the charity auction.

The ballroom glittered beneath chandeliers as Chicago’s wealthy elite gathered around linen-covered tables. I wore an elegant gown fitted around my six-month belly while Alexander sat beside me in a black suit, composed and commanding as always.

For months, I had admired one particular diamond necklace in the auction catalog.

Alexander knew.

He had even promised me, “If you love it that much, I’ll get it for you. Consider it a gift for you and our baby.”

So when the bidding began, I reached for his hand.

One hundred thousand.

One hundred eighty thousand.

Two hundred fifty thousand.

Alexander raised his paddle.

“Three hundred thousand.”

The hammer fell.

“Sold!”

I smiled at him, genuinely happy.

Then Alexander stood.

He walked onto the stage, took the microphone, and said, “I’d like to present this gift to someone special.”

My hand instinctively rested on my stomach.

Then he said her name.

“Olivia Hayes.”

My entire body went cold.

Olivia walked onto the stage in a fitted white dress, pretending to be shocked.

Alexander opened the jewelry box.

Then, in front of everyone, my husband personally fastened the necklace around her neck.

The room applauded.

I could barely breathe.

When he returned to our table, I asked quietly, “You knew how much I wanted that necklace.”

He shrugged.

“Claire, it’s just jewelry.”

Then Olivia approached us wearing it.

“I honestly didn’t know you wanted it,” she said.

That was when I noticed the watch on her wrist.

The rose-gold watch Alexander had promised me for my birthday.

Beside it was another expensive bracelet.

Something inside me finally broke.

I stood.

Alexander frowned. “Where are you going?”

I walked straight to the stage and asked for the microphone.

“Claire,” he warned, following me. “Don’t make a scene.”

I turned toward the crowd.

“I only have one announcement.”

The room slowly fell silent.

I looked directly at my husband.

“That necklace? I don’t want it anymore.”

Alexander’s face hardened.

“You can give it to whoever you like,” I continued. “Because from this moment on, you and I are getting divorced.”

His expression vanished.

I placed one hand over my pregnant stomach.

“And as for this baby, don’t expect to be a father to this child anymore.”

The entire ballroom went silent.

Alexander stormed toward me.

“Claire, what the hell did you just say?”

“You heard me.”

“That’s my child.”

“And I don’t want my child growing up believing this is how a husband treats his wife.”

Olivia suddenly rushed forward, crying.

“Claire, please. If you want the necklace, I’ll give it back.”

I looked at her wrist.

“What about the watch?”

Her hand disappeared behind her back.

“And the apartment? The bracelet? The rest of the gifts?”

Whispers spread through the ballroom.

Alexander immediately stepped in front of her.

“Enough, Claire.”

Again, he protected her.

That was all I needed.

I removed my wedding ring and placed it on the table beside the stage.

“Keep protecting her.”

For the first time that night, panic crossed Alexander’s face.

“Claire.”

I walked away.

Outside, I called my attorney.

“Daniel, proceed with the divorce.”

When I reached my car, Alexander burst through the hotel doors behind me.

“CLAIRE!”

I got inside.

He ran after the car.

The man who never lost control was sprinting down the driveway, shouting my name, slamming his palm against the window.

“I’M NOT AGREEING TO A DIVORCE!”

I looked at the driver.

“Keep going.”

The car accelerated.

Alexander kept running.

May you like

But I never looked back.
