Chapter 8 - SIXTY SECONDS

The vault doors slammed shut.

For one impossible second, nobody moved.

Then Ryan shouted.

“Back exit!”

Torres ran toward the keypad.

Dead.

Smoke began pouring through ventilation grates.

Daniel had not planted a bomb.

He had done something more controllable.

A chemical fire inside the electrical system.

Enough heat and smoke to kill us without destroying the entire building.

“Forty-five seconds!” someone shouted.

Ryan grabbed a metal chair and smashed the glass partition beside the manager’s office.

Behind it was a narrow service corridor.

“Move!”

Charles was still recovering and couldn’t run.

Two officers carried him.

I held the flash drive inside my coat.

Torres pushed through a maintenance door.

Locked.

Ryan fired twice at the hinge.

The door kicked open.

Cold air rushed inside.

We spilled into an alley as black smoke erupted from the roof.

Thirty seconds later the front windows exploded.

I turned.

The bank was burning.

But we were alive.

And so was my father’s evidence.

Daniel made his first real mistake that afternoon.

He believed fire destroyed the archive.

So he stopped hiding.

The flash drive contained years of financial records.

Secret recordings.

Internal emails.

Transfers from Daniel to Brandon’s father.

And a video my father recorded six months before his death.

I watched it alone.

My father looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

“If you’re seeing this, Emily, I’m sorry.”

I covered my mouth.

“There are people who look at wealth and see opportunity. Daniel Price became one of them.”

Dad explained that Daniel had manipulated vulnerable businessmen into relationships with wealthy heirs.

Marriage.

Business partnerships.

Personal friendships.

Then he extracted money.

Brandon had been recruited young.

His father was already deeply indebted to Daniel.

Brandon’s assignment was simple.

Meet me.

Marry me.

Gain influence.

But something changed.

According to my father, Brandon had initially tried backing out.

My heart twisted unexpectedly.

Why?

Had he actually loved me once?

I hated myself for wondering.

Dad continued.

“People are rarely entirely one thing, Emily. Brandon may care about you. That does not mean he is safe.”

The video had been recorded before our wedding.

Dad never stopped it.

Why?

Because he lacked proof.

Because I was thirty years old and furious when he questioned Brandon.

Because love made me stubborn.

Daniel exploited that.

The final file contained evidence of embezzlement exceeding ninety million dollars.

Torres smiled grimly.

“We can bury him.”

First we had to find him.

Daniel disappeared.

His passports were flagged.

Airports watched.

Properties searched.

Nothing.

Then Brandon requested another meeting.

This time I almost refused.

But something in my father’s video stayed with me.

Brandon may care about you.

I needed one final answer.

When I entered the interview room, Brandon looked exhausted.

“I heard about the bank.”

“News travels fast in jail.”

“I didn’t know Daniel would try killing you again.”

“That sounds almost concerned.”

He looked down.

“I never wanted the baby to die.”

I stared at him.

“You pushed his mother off a cliff.”

His eyes filled with something that looked dangerously like regret.

“I know.”

“No. You know you got caught.”

He flinched.

Good.

“I saw my father’s files.”

Brandon went still.

“You knew him before you knew me.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Three months.”

“Did Daniel send you to me?”

Silence.

“Answer me.”

“Yes.”

One word.

Seven years of marriage cracked open.

I forced myself to keep breathing.

“The coffee shop?”

“Planned.”

“The charity dinner?”

“Planned.”

“You asking me about the novel I was reading?”

“Daniel had someone review your social media.”

I almost laughed at how pathetic it sounded.

“And the proposal?”

Brandon looked at me.

“That was mine.”

I hated the tiny part of my heart that reacted.

“Why?”

“Because somewhere in the middle, it stopped being a job.”

“Don’t.”

“It’s true.”

“You had an affair.”

“Yes.”

“You tried killing me.”

His eyes closed.

“Yes.”

“Love does not push people off mountains.”

“I know.”

“Then stop using that word.”

He nodded slowly.

For once, he obeyed.

“Why did you do it?”

“Debt.”

“That isn’t enough.”

“Fear.”

“Still not enough.”

“Daniel threatened to expose everything.”

I waited.

“He told me you would discover I had been assigned to meet you. That you’d take the company. That I’d lose everything.”

“So you chose my life instead.”

He began crying.

Real tears this time.

I felt nothing.

“I spent my whole life terrified of being poor,” he said. “My father lost everything when I was young. Daniel came in and fixed it. I thought power meant never being helpless again.”

“And look at you.”

He stared at the handcuffs.

“Yes.”

I stood.

“Why did you ask to see me?”

“Because I know where Daniel is going.”

I stopped.

“Where?”

“He’s not trying to escape.”

“Then what?”

“He wants Noah.”

Every part of me went cold.

Brandon continued quickly.

“Your father changed the trust. If you die, Noah becomes beneficiary.”

“I know.”

“Daniel knows too.”

“He can’t control Noah.”

“If he controls Noah’s guardian, he can.”

My mind raced.

“I’m his mother.”

“That’s why Daniel still needs you dead.”

“And who does he plan to make guardian?”

Brandon looked sick.

“Me.”

I stared at him.

“You’re in prison.”

“He believes he can clear me.”

“How?”

“By making Gretchen look like the mastermind.”

The plan was insane.

But Daniel specialized in creating narratives.

If he killed me and manipulated evidence, Brandon could claim Gretchen planned the mountain incident.

Then Brandon would remain Noah’s biological father.

Legal battles could give him access.

Daniel could control Brandon again.

A cycle.

“No,” I said.

Brandon looked at me.

“No one gets near my son.”

For the first time, a strange expression crossed his face.

Pride.

“You sound like your father.”

“Do not compare yourself to him.”

“I wasn’t.”

I left.

Ryan was waiting outside.

“What did he say?”

I told him.

His expression darkened.

“We move Noah immediately.”

We did.

But Daniel was already ahead.

When we reached the protected residence, the nursery was empty.

My heart stopped.

The nanny assigned by the protection team lay unconscious on the floor.

Noah’s blanket was gone.

On the crib sat a white envelope.

My name was written across it.

I tore it open.

Inside was a photograph taken less than five minutes earlier.

Noah.

Alive.

Wrapped in his blue blanket.

On the back were five words.

YOUR FATHER OWED ME EVERYTHING.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“If you hurt him—”

“I won’t.”

His voice was calm.

That made it worse.

“What do you want?”

“The flash drive.”

“Where is Noah?”

“Safe.”

“Let me hear him.”

A pause.

Then my son cried.

My knees weakened.

“I want him back.”

“And I want your father’s archive.”

“Fine.”

Ryan shook his head violently.

I ignored him.

“Tell me where.”

Daniel laughed.

“You know exactly where.”

My stomach dropped.

Glacier National Park.

The mountain.

May you like

Where Brandon pushed me.

Daniel wanted to finish the story where it began.
