Chapter 7 - THE MAN BEHIND MY HUSBAND

Brandon sat behind thick glass wearing county-issued gray.

He looked smaller without expensive tailoring.

I wished that satisfied me.

It didn’t.

Charles had been missing for three hours.

Every minute mattered.

I picked up the phone.

Brandon smiled.

“I knew you’d come.”

“Where is Charles?”

“No hello?”

“Where is he?”

His smile disappeared.

“I don’t know.”

I stood.

He quickly said, “But I know who took him.”

I sat again.

“Daniel Price.”

Brandon’s eyes flickered.

So Gretchen was right.

“You already know.”

“Keep talking.”

He leaned closer to the glass.

“Daniel isn’t what you think.”

“At this point, nobody is.”

“Your father trusted him.”

“So did I.”

“That’s why he was useful.”

“Useful to whom?”

Brandon hesitated.

I understood.

“This is bigger than you.”

His jaw tightened.

“What did Daniel promise you?”

“Money.”

“Mine.”

“Technically—”

I slammed my hand against the counter.

“Don’t.”

A guard stepped forward.

I lowered my voice.

“You tried murdering me and my son. You do not get to explain technicalities.”

For a moment Brandon looked almost ashamed.

Then the old arrogance returned.

“Daniel said your father had hidden assets.”

“What assets?”

“Over a hundred million held through private partnerships.”

I knew some of them.

Not all.

“Daniel planned to transfer control after you were declared dead.”

“To you?”

Brandon laughed.

“That’s what I thought.”

There it was.

The betrayal.

Daniel had used Brandon too.

“When did you figure it out?”

“After Glacier.”

“How?”

“I found instructions on a secure server. Once the insurance paid, several companies were going to collapse intentionally. Daniel would acquire their debt through proxies.”

“Leaving you with nothing.”

“Leaving me blamed for everything.”

I almost admired the symmetry.

Brandon had planned to destroy me.

Daniel planned to destroy Brandon.

“What does Charles have to do with it?”

“He can stop the transfers.”

“Where would Daniel take him?”

Brandon looked at me.

“What do I get?”

I wanted to reach through the glass.

“A chance to save the man who treated you like family.”

“That isn’t enough.”

I stood.

“Then enjoy prison.”

“Emily.”

I turned.

His voice changed.

Desperate.

“I want protection.”

“From Daniel?”

“You don’t understand.”

“No, Brandon. You don’t understand.”

I leaned toward the glass.

“For years, you taught me to believe I needed you. You made decisions and called it protection. You lied and called it love. You pushed me off a mountain and expected me to disappear.”

I pointed toward him.

“You have nothing left to bargain with.”

His breathing became uneven.

“He has people inside law enforcement.”

That stopped me.

“What?”

“Daniel knew about the safe house.”

The attack.

Only a small group knew that location.

Torres had assumed Brandon obtained it through private surveillance.

Maybe not.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then tell me where Charles is.”

Brandon closed his eyes.

“There’s an abandoned lodge near Whitefish. Your father owned it years ago.”

I knew the property.

Cedar Ridge Lodge.

It had been closed after a fire.

“Daniel uses the underground storage rooms.”

I grabbed the phone tighter.

“If you’re lying—”

“I’m not.”

I left the room.

Torres was waiting.

She had heard everything.

Within twenty minutes, tactical teams headed north.

I wanted to go.

They refused.

This time I didn’t argue.

Ryan stayed with me at the command post.

For nearly an hour we listened to radio traffic.

“Team One approaching east entrance.”

“No movement.”

“Thermal shows two individuals lower level.”

Then gunfire.

My heart stopped.

More shouting.

Then silence.

Finally:

“Hostage located.”

I grabbed Ryan’s arm.

“Condition?”

Static.

Then:

“Hostage alive.”

I started crying.

Charles had been beaten and drugged but survived.

Daniel Price escaped.

That should have felt like victory.

Instead, it made him more dangerous.

Inside the lodge, investigators found files proving the conspiracy reached back five years.

Daniel had manipulated Hale Group’s financing.

He encouraged Brandon’s reckless expansion.

Created hidden loans.

Falsified projections.

Then introduced the insurance idea through an intermediary.

Brandon thought he designed the murder.

In reality, Daniel had spent years pushing him toward desperation.

That did not make Brandon innocent.

He still pushed me.

But someone had quietly loaded the gun.

Later that night, Charles woke at the hospital.

I sat beside him.

“You scared me.”

He managed a weak smile.

“Getting old is embarrassing.”

“You were kidnapped.”

“Still embarrassing.”

Despite everything, I laughed.

Then his expression became serious.

“Emily, your father suspected Daniel.”

“What?”

“Near the end of his life.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“We had suspicions, not proof.”

Charles reached for my hand.

“Your father created a contingency.”

“What contingency?”

“A secure archive.”

“Where?”

“He never told me directly.”

Frustration surged.

“Then how does that help?”

Charles looked toward Noah sleeping nearby.

“He told me something strange shortly before he died.”

“What?”

“If Emily ever has a child, give her the blue book.”

I stared at him.

“What blue book?”

Charles sighed.

“I’ve been trying to remember for six years.”

Then I knew.

My father used to read me bedtime stories when I was little.

One book had a blue leather cover.

The Adventures of Robin Hood.

After Dad died, I packed his personal library into storage.

We went there the next morning under heavy protection.

Hundreds of boxes.

I found the book after forty minutes.

Inside the hollowed cover was a key.

No label.

Only a number.

Ryan examined it.

“Safe-deposit box.”

Charles nodded.

The bank was in Missoula.

Box 317 belonged to a holding company created by my father.

Inside were three things.

A letter.

A flash drive.

And a photograph of Daniel Price meeting a man I recognized immediately.

Brandon’s father.

Taken thirteen years earlier.

Before Brandon ever met me.

My hands began trembling.

I opened the letter.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then Daniel has likely done what I feared he might someday attempt. I made a terrible mistake trusting him with too much.

But the next sentence was worse.

Daniel did not find Brandon by accident.

He selected him.

I stopped breathing.

Ryan leaned closer.

“What does that mean?”

I continued reading.

Your marriage may have begun as part of a plan.

The room tilted.

My entire relationship—

the coffee shop where Brandon “accidentally” met me.

The second meeting at a charity event.

His perfect interest in everything I loved.

His proposal.

Had it all been arranged?

I read the final paragraph.

Trust Charles. Trust evidence. And above all, trust yourself. You were always stronger than the men who wanted you to believe otherwise.

I lowered the letter.

My husband had spent seven years pretending to love me.

Daniel had spent thirteen years preparing to steal my family’s fortune.

And somewhere out there, he knew we had found my father’s archive.

Ryan picked up the flash drive.

“This might end everything.”

Before he could connect it, the bank lights went out.

Emergency alarms began screaming.

Torres drew her weapon.

“Everybody away from the windows!”

Then a voice came through the bank’s security system.

Calm.

Male.

Familiar.

Daniel Price.

“Hello, Emily.”

My blood froze.

“You finally found your father’s little insurance policy.”

A red light blinked above the vault.

Ryan looked toward it.

“What is that?”

Torres’s face changed.

“Everybody out!”

Daniel laughed through the speakers.

May you like

“You have sixty seconds.”

Then we smelled smoke.
