Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN INSIDE THE MANSION

|

Rebecca refused to let me leave the hospital until my doctors approved it.

I hated every minute of waiting.

My son believed I had abandoned him, and somewhere inside Alexander's mansion, someone was preparing to take him away.

The house manager, Patricia Moore, arrived at Rebecca's office the following afternoon. She was a small woman in her sixties who had worked for the Whitmore family for nearly twenty years.

She carried an envelope.

“I should have done this sooner,” she said.

Inside were copies of travel itineraries, a printed email, and several photographs of Vanessa entering Noah's bedroom after midnight.

Patricia explained that Vanessa had begun spending nights at the mansion shortly after my divorce papers were signed. She told the staff she was preparing to become Noah's stepmother.

At first, I had thought Vanessa wanted to replace me socially.

I had underestimated her.

“She told the boy you were sick of being his mother,” Patricia said. “She said you had chosen a new life without him.”

I gripped the edge of the desk.

“Did Alexander know?”

Patricia looked down.

“He heard her say it. He told her to stop upsetting the child, but he didn't correct the lie.”

That hurt more than I expected.

Alexander didn't need to invent every cruelty himself. He only needed to stand nearby while other people carried them out.

Patricia handed Rebecca a copy of the email.

The subject line read: Noah's Departure — Final Arrangements.

The message had been sent from Vanessa's personal account to a private aviation company. It requested a flight to Geneva, with departure scheduled for Friday morning.

The passenger list included Vanessa Collins and Noah Whitmore.

Alexander's name appeared beneath theirs.

My stomach dropped.

“He's taking our son out of the country.”

Rebecca examined the document carefully.

“It appears that way, but we need authentication and confirmation that the flight is still scheduled. We'll give this to the authorities and ask the court to act immediately.”

Patricia began to cry.

“I thought he loved that little boy enough to protect him.”

I wanted to tell her that Alexander did love Noah.

I had seen it in the way he carried him when he fell asleep, in the way he remembered every toy he wanted, and in the rare moments when he forgot to be a powerful businessman and simply became a father.

But love could become something ugly when mixed with possession.

Alexander believed Noah belonged to him because everything else in his life did.

Rebecca asked Patricia about the security footage.

The older woman shook her head.

“Mr. Price controls the system. He told the staff that the cameras in the east wing were being replaced.”

“Were they?” Rebecca asked.

“No.”

“Then where are the recordings?”

Patricia swallowed.

“I think Daniel kept a copy.”

Daniel Price had been Alexander's head of security for eleven years. He had hired the guards who attacked me, and I remembered seeing him outside the bedroom afterward, speaking quietly with Alexander.

I had assumed he was receiving instructions about the ambulance.

Now I wondered what else he had heard.

Rebecca contacted him through a lawyer, requesting a formal interview. He refused.

That evening, my phone rang from a blocked number.

A man's voice spoke before I could ask who it was.

“Mrs. Bennett, my name is Daniel Price.”

I sat upright despite the pain.

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“Did you hear Alexander give the order?”

A long silence followed.

“I heard enough.”

“Then tell the police.”

“I can't.”

“Can't or won't?”

“Both, perhaps.”

I felt anger rise so quickly that it almost eclipsed my fear.

“You stood there while two men beat me.”

“Yes.”

“You let them do it.”

“Yes.”

“Why are you calling me now?”

His breathing grew uneven.

“Because I found something in the footage that changes everything.”

“What?”

“The assault wasn't the only thing recorded that night.”

“Then what else?”

Before he could answer, another voice sounded in the background.

A woman's voice.

Vanessa's.

“Daniel? Who are you talking to?”

The line went dead.

I immediately called Rebecca.

She instructed me not to call the number again. She contacted the police, who began making arrangements to locate Daniel and preserve any available evidence.

For the first time, I allowed myself to imagine that Alexander's money might not be enough to bury the truth.

Then, at 11:06 p.m., Patricia sent Rebecca another message.

It contained a photograph of the mansion's front gate.

A black SUV was parked outside.

Noah stood beside it, wearing a blue coat and holding his stuffed rabbit.

Vanessa was bending toward him, one hand gripping his shoulder.

And in the reflection of the SUV's window, I saw Alexander standing behind them with a passport in his hand.

The departure had been moved forward.

They weren't waiting until Friday.

They were leaving tonight.
