Chapter 1 - THE PRICE OF MY SUFFERING

|
"My husband ordered his bodyguards to beat me so badly that I ended up in intensive care—all because I refused to apologize to his mistress. I had three broken ribs, a ruptured spleen, and a head injury, but he never came to protect me. Instead, at 3:12 a.m., his mistress walked into my hospital room, looked down at my battered body, and smiled. “Still alive?” she asked. And as I lay there helpless, one terrifying thought consumed me: if my husband could do this to me, what would he do to keep me away from our three-year-old son?
My name is Emily Bennett, and three days before that terrible night, I had signed divorce papers ending my marriage to one of the city's most powerful businessmen. I had also signed an agreement giving Alexander custody of our little boy, Noah, because he promised I could visit whenever I wanted. I believed him because, even after everything, I couldn't imagine a father deliberately separating his child from his mother. That was the last mistake I made as Alexander's obedient wife.
Vanessa Collins stood beside my hospital bed wearing expensive heels and carrying a designer handbag. She looked rested, beautiful, and completely pleased with herself, while I could barely sit up without pain. The doctors had told me I had three broken ribs, a ruptured spleen, and a serious head injury. Vanessa glanced at the machines beside me as though she were disappointed they were still working.
""You should be grateful, Emily,"" she said, pulling a chair closer. ""You got three years living in Alexander's mansion, wearing beautiful clothes, and pretending you belonged in his world. Girls who grow up in orphanages don't usually get opportunities like that."" She smiled and added, ""Now it's time to give everything back.""
I stared at her, remembering the bedroom where my life had nearly ended. I had been packing my clothes when Vanessa picked up a photograph of Noah's second birthday and told me to leave it behind. I refused because it was a picture of my child, not something that belonged to the Whitmore family. She called Alexander, cried, and accused me of refusing to accept the divorce.
When Alexander arrived, he didn't ask what had happened. He simply told me to apologize to Vanessa, and for the first time in three years, I said no. He looked at his bodyguards and gave an order that I would hear in my nightmares for a long time. ""Teach her a lesson.""
I remembered calling his name while the men hurt me. I remembered looking toward the doorway, certain my husband would stop them once he realized how serious things had become. But Alexander turned away, leaving me frightened and helpless on the bedroom floor. The next thing I clearly remembered was waking up in intensive care.
Now Vanessa leaned closer and lowered her voice. ""I told Alexander to punish you, and he listened,"" she whispered. ""You see, Emily, he finally understands which woman matters."" She looked at my wedding-ring finger and laughed softly.
Something inside me became strangely calm. I asked Vanessa why Alexander had refused to marry her during the eight years she had pursued him. Her smile disappeared, and I told her the truth I had spent years avoiding: Alexander married me because I was quiet, agreeable, and easier to control. He hadn't chosen a better woman; he had chosen someone he thought would never challenge him.
""Shut up,"" Vanessa snapped, standing beside my bed. I looked at her and asked why she still needed to humiliate me if she had finally won Alexander. Then I said, ""If you need a man to hurt another woman to prove he loves you, what exactly have you won?"" Her hand struck my face before I could say anything else.
The monitor beside me began sounding an alarm, and a nurse hurried into the room. Vanessa immediately stepped backward and began pretending to cry, claiming she had only come to comfort me. I watched her perform the same helpless innocence she had used against me at the mansion. But this time, when the nurse asked whether I wanted Vanessa barred from visiting, I answered without hesitation.
""Yes. Don't let her come back.""
After the nurse left, I lay awake thinking about Noah. He loved scrambled eggs, hated the crust on his toast, and believed orange juice tasted better from his favorite blue cup. Every morning before preschool, he hugged my legs and begged me to pick him up early. I wondered whether he had asked for me that morning and whether Alexander had told him why Mommy hadn't come home.
The thought terrified me because Alexander controlled everything surrounding our son. He had the mansion, the money, the lawyers, and the custody agreement bearing my signature. I had nothing but his promise that Noah would never be taken out of my life. And after what had happened in our bedroom, I no longer knew whether that promise meant anything.
By dawn, I had made a decision. I would never return to Alexander as his wife, no matter how much money he offered or how many apologies he made. But I would fight to remain Noah's mother, even if that meant confronting the man who had nearly killed me. I didn't yet know how I would do it.
Then, at 7:40 that morning, my hospital door opened.

Alexander walked in carrying a bouquet of white roses, the same flowers he had given me when he proposed. He looked handsome, calm, and almost concerned, as though the previous night had been nothing more than an unfortunate argument. He placed the flowers beside my bed and reached into his jacket. What he put on the table next made me realize he had already decided what my suffering was worth.
