Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Morgue

The room began to tilt. The steady beeping of the ICU monitors behind the glass turned into a deafening roar in my ears.
"What did you just say?" My voice was barely a gasp, the words scraping against my dry throat.
Lucas Vance caught me by the elbow before my knees gave out completely. "Sarah, what the hell are you talking about? Emily buried her daughter. I saw the death certificate."
"The death certificate was signed by Dr. Robert Chen," Agent Sarah Vance said, her eyes dead serious as she held out the forensic report. "The chief coroner of Cook County. Do you know whose payroll Dr. Chen has been on for the last eight years? Marcus Hayes. Alexander's late uncle's faction."
I snatched the paper from her hands. My eyes scanned the black-and-white printout, reading the bold letters that felt like a bolt of lightning through my soul:
*ALLELE MATCH: 0.00%*
*SUBJECT: UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE (EST. AGE 4)*
*REFERENCE: HAYES, ALEXANDER / BENNETT, EMILY*
*CONCLUSION: ABSOLUTE GENETIC EXCLUSION.*
"No..." I shook my head violently, tears blurring my vision. "No, no, no! I held her hand! It was cold! She was under the sheet!"
"You saw a child of the same height and build, with severe head trauma, dressed in Grace’s clothes," Agent Vance stated relentlessly. "Olivia Carter didn't hire that driver to stage a minor accident, Emily. That was the cover story she fed to Madison. Olivia hired that driver to create a chaotic scene so Grace could be snatched in the confusion."
Inside the ICU room, the heart monitor suddenly flatlined with a frantic, piercing alarm.
*BEEEEEEEEEP.*
Alexander had ripped the oxygen mask off his face.
He was clawing at the glass with both hands, his chest bandages turning bright scarlet as the surgical sutures tore open under his violent thrashing. His eyes were wide, bulging with a madness that surpassed anything I had ever seen. He had heard every single word through the intercom speaker.
"Grace!" Alexander screamed, his voice a bloody, choked howl through the glass. "GRACE IS ALIVE?!"
Two nurses and an orderly rushed into the ICU room, attempting to pin his arms down, but Alexander fought them like a wounded beast, spraying blood across the white tiles.
"Get off me!" Alexander roared, throwing a two-hundred-pound orderly into the medical cart. He slammed his bloody palm against the observation window, staring directly at Agent Vance. "WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER?! WHERE IS SHE?!"
Agent Vance stepped up to the glass, unfazed by his fury. She pressed the wall intercom button.
"We don't know, Alexander," she said coldly. "Because three hours after the body was swapped in the morgue, Olivia Carter’s personal pilot filed an off-radar flight plan out of Gary, Indiana. The plane landed in Mexico, but the cargo—a four-year-old girl matching Grace’s description—was transferred to an unmarked maritime yacht."
Alexander collapsed against the glass, leaving a sickening trail of blood as he slid to his knees, his forehead resting against the cold surface.
"Olivia didn't want to kill Grace," I whispered, the horrifying realization clicking into place like the tumblers of a vault. "She wanted to destroy me. She wanted Alexander to believe our daughter was dead so I would leave him... and then she could present Grace back to him months later as a 'miraculous rescue' to cement herself as his savior forever."
"Precisely," Agent Vance said. "Except Alexander didn't fall into her arms. He threw Olivia to the feds and gave up his entire empire. And now, the people who have Grace on that yacht have realized that Olivia is in federal custody and cannot pay them."
I dropped the blood-stained papers onto the floor.
The grief that had hollowed me out for weeks didn't disappear—it transformed. It forged itself into an incandescent, terrifying rage.
My baby was out there.
Scared. Alone. Wondering why her mommy and daddy hadn't come for her.
I walked right up to the ICU door, pushed the panicked nurses aside, and stepped into Alexander’s room.
Alexander looked up at me from the floor, his chest bleeding profusely, his breath coming in ragged, tortured gasps. He looked at me not as the Mafia boss of Chicago, but as a broken father begging for salvation.
"Emily..." he sobbed, clutching the hem of my jeans. "Tell me what to do. Tell me to die, tell me to kill... tell me what to do."
I knelt down in the puddle of his blood, grabbed him by the front of his torn hospital gown, and pulled his face inches from mine.
"You're going to survive this surgery, Alexander," I commanded, my voice vibrating with lethal authority. "You're going to pull every string, call every corrupt cop, every cartel contact, and every mercenary on your payroll."
"Yes," he gasped, his eyes wild with devotion. "Anything."
"We are going to find our daughter," I said, my fingernails digging into his collarbone. "And whoever touched a single hair on her head... you and I are going to slaughter them together."
Alexander’s bloody lips twisted into a savage, terrifying smile.

"Yes, Emily," he whispered. "Whatever you command."
