Chapter 3 - The Untouchable Haven

I didn't run. Grief strips away fear until all that remains is a hollow, reckless numbness. If Lucas Vance had come to put a bullet between my eyes to strike a blow against Alexander Hayes, he would only be doing me a favor.

"I don't belong to Alexander anymore, Mr. Vance," I said, my voice steady against the howling wind. "If you're looking for leverage against him, you're looking at the wrong woman."

Lucas chuckled, a low, dry sound. He was forty, taller than Alexander, with silver threading through his dark hair and sharp gray eyes that held none of the chaotic cruelty of Chicago's underworld. He raised two empty, gloved hands to show he carried no weapon.

"I know you don't belong to him," Lucas replied. "If you did, you wouldn't be staying in a high-rise lease under your grandmother's maiden name. And I'm not here to hurt you, Emily. I’m here because your late father once saved my life in Detroit twenty years ago, before you ever laid eyes on Alexander Hayes."

I stared at him, stunned. "My father?"

"Arthur Bennett was an honest union boss," Lucas said softly. "The Hayes family crushed him, forced you into their sphere, and made Alexander look like your savior when he was actually your cage. When I saw your name pop up on the cross-border corporate transfer list at Vance Global Logistics, I realized who you were."

He stepped aside and opened the rear door of the Escalade.

"Your husband's private jet was just grounded at O’Hare by federal marshals, but that won't keep him contained for long. Alexander doesn't accept losing. When he finds you—and he will—he will drag you back to Chicago by your hair if he has to. Get in, Emily. Let me give you real armor."

Ten minutes later, we were sitting in a private office on the top floor of the Vance Financial Tower overlooking the harbor.

"I don't want another mobster in my life," I told him, refusing the glass of water he offered. "I want peace. I want to build a foundation in Grace's name. I want to forget the smell of gunpowder and expensive cologne."

"Vance Logistics is ninety percent legitimate now," Lucas said, leaning against his desk. "I left the gutter behind. And I can make you completely untouchable. I can give you Canadian citizenship expedited under national corporate interest, twenty-four-hour private diplomatic security, and legal immunity against any custody or marital claims Alexander files."

"And what do you want in exchange?" I asked, my eyes narrowing. "Nobody gives anything for free in your world."

Lucas's expression hardened. "Alexander Hayes controls the shipping manifests for the Port of Chicago. Half of those containers carry illicit cargo tied to human trafficking and black-market arms—things even the old-school bosses refused to touch. You were his head of corporate finance for three years before you had Grace. You know the shell companies. You know the ledger keys."

I felt the blood drain from my face. "You want me to destroy him."

"I want you to survive him," Lucas corrected gently. "Because the moment Alexander realizes you aren't coming back willingly, he won't come to Toronto as a grieving husband. He will come as an executioner."

Back in Chicago, inside the dimly lit confines of the Hayes Syndicate headquarters, Alexander was drowning in whiskey.

His phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was an encrypted text from his head of surveillance.

Alexander stared at the screen. The glass of whiskey shattered in his bare hand, amber liquor mixing with crimson blood dripping onto his desk.

"Lucas Vance," Alexander hissed through clenched teeth.

The door to his office burst open. Madison, his twenty-four-year-old sister, rushed inside, visibly shaken.

"Alexander, you need to turn on the news! It's Olivia!"

"I told you never to speak her name in my presence," Alexander warned, his voice shaking with demonic rage.

"No, Alexander, listen to me!" Madison cried, tears streaming down her face. "The police just arrested the driver who hit Grace! The man who ran her over!"

Alexander stopped breathing. "What?"

"The police impounded his phone," Madison sobbed, her knees giving out as she fell against the wall. "He was high on opioids, but Alexander... the money transferred into his offshore account two hours before the crash... it didn't come from a cartel rival."

Alexander grabbed Madison by the shoulders, shaking her violently. "Where did the money come from?!"

May you like

"It came from Olivia's offshore boutique account," Madison screamed. "Olivia paid him to cause a distraction near the school!"
