Chapter 5 - The Man Ethan Trusted Most

Charles Calloway had built his reputation on one sentence.
Family comes first.
Ethan had heard it at dinner tables, shareholder meetings, charity galas, and once beside his mother’s hospital bed.
By noon, he understood what his father had actually meant.
The family name came first.
Everyone else was expendable.
Charles was waiting in the Manhattan boardroom when Ethan arrived.
Seventy-two.
Silver-haired.
Perfectly tailored.
Still intimidating despite the cane he had used since his stroke.
Grace entered behind Ethan.
Declan followed.
Charles looked at Grace as though she had betrayed him personally.
“You sold the shares.”
Grace removed her coat.
“They were mine.”
“They belonged with this family.”
“I am this family.”
Charles’s jaw tightened.
“No. You married into it.”
Ethan felt something shift inside him.
“Dad.”
Charles ignored him.
The meeting began.
Lawyers presented the transfers.
Sixty-three million dollars had moved through shell companies during eighteen months.
Vanessa had facilitated several payments.
But the beneficiary behind them was Charles.
He denied everything.
Until Declan displayed an audio recording.
Vanessa’s voice filled the room.
“If Ethan discovers the trust amendment, we’re finished.”
Then Charles:
“He won’t. My son sees what he wants to see.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
Charles looked toward the speakers.
The recording continued.
“When the baby is born, the voting shares move into the new family vehicle. Grace loses authority. Ethan remains CEO. We control everything.”
Vanessa asked:
“And me?”
Charles answered:
“You keep Ethan distracted.”
Silence.
Ethan stared at his father.
Vanessa had been recruited before the affair.
Before the first dinner.
Before the first hotel room.
His betrayal remained his choice.
But someone had deliberately placed temptation in his path because they knew exactly what kind of man he had become.
“You used her,” Ethan whispered.
Charles leaned back.
“I used your weakness.”
Grace closed her eyes.
Ethan looked at her.
That distinction mattered.
He knew it did.
Charles had manipulated him.
But Charles had not forced him to kiss Vanessa.
Had not forced him to lie.
Had not forced him to leave his pregnant wife alone.
Ethan stood.
“I vote to remove Charles Calloway from all positions within Calloway Maritime.”
His father laughed.
“You don’t have the votes.”
Declan raised his hand.
“Pierce Global votes yes.”
Grace looked at Ethan.
Then raised hers.
“Yes.”
One minority director followed.
Then another.
Charles’s smile disappeared.
The corporate counsel counted.
Motion passed.
Charles looked at his son.
“You would destroy your own father for her?”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
He glanced at Grace.
“I’m finally refusing to destroy her for you.”
Charles was escorted from the room.
But the victory lasted less than a minute.
Grace suddenly gripped the edge of the table.
Declan noticed first.
“Grace?”
“I’m fine.”
Then she gasped.
Ethan crossed the room.
A dark stain appeared beneath her chair.
His entire body went cold.
“Grace.”
She looked down.
Her eyes widened.
“No.”
Ethan dropped beside her.
“Call an ambulance!”
The boardroom exploded into motion.
Grace caught his sleeve.
“Ethan.”
“I’m here.”
“The baby.”
“She’s going to be okay.”
“You don’t know that.”
“No.”
His voice shook.
“But I’m staying.”
The ambulance arrived within minutes.
At the hospital, doctors rushed Grace upstairs.
Ethan followed until a nurse stopped him.
“Immediate family?”
He looked through the doors.
Grace was disappearing down the corridor.
“My wife.”
The word felt undeserved.
But Grace looked back.
For one second, their eyes met.
May you like
Then she said something Ethan never expected.
“Let him come.”
