Chapter 2 - The Signature at 5:48

Grace looked at Vanessa’s left wrist.

At the bracelet.

A thin platinum chain with three emerald stones.

Ethan recognized it immediately.

He had bought it in Manhattan two months earlier and charged it to a corporate hospitality account.

He had told Grace the expense was for a client.

Grace raised her eyes.

“So that’s where it went.”

Vanessa instinctively covered the bracelet.

Ethan felt something inside his chest drop.

“Grace, listen to me.”

“No.”

Her answer was quiet.

That made it worse.

“You’ve had seven years to speak to me, Ethan. Tonight you get to listen.”

The elevator chimed.

Declan reached toward the open doors, but Ethan stepped forward.

“What are you doing with Pierce?”

Declan’s expression barely changed.

Grace’s did.

For the first time, Ethan saw something behind her calm.

Not heartbreak.

Resolve.

“Business.”

“What business?”

“My business.”

“You’re my wife.”

Grace stared at him.

Then she looked toward Vanessa.

“You might want to reconsider using that sentence tonight.”

Declan almost smiled.

Ethan noticed.

“You think this is funny?”

“No,” Declan said. “I think it’s overdue.”

“Stay out of my marriage.”

Declan’s eyes cooled.

“I am.”

That answer confused Ethan more than an insult would have.

Grace entered the elevator.

Ethan caught the door.

“Where are you going?”

“To finish something.”

“What?”

Grace looked directly at him.

“The part of my life you never bothered to ask about.”

The doors closed.

Ethan stood motionless.

Vanessa approached him carefully.

“Ethan.”

He turned.

“What did she mean?”

“I don’t know.”

But Vanessa looked frightened.

And Ethan knew her too well not to notice.

“What do you know?”

“Nothing.”

“Vanessa.”

She glanced toward the elevator display.

Twenty-eight.

The private conference floor.

Ethan immediately headed toward the second bank of elevators.

Vanessa caught his arm.

“Don’t.”

That single word stopped him.

He looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Why not?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I just think chasing your pregnant wife through a hotel after she caught us together is going to make things worse.”

It was a reasonable answer.

Too reasonable.

“What’s on twenty-eight?”

“I don’t know.”

He pulled away.

“You’re lying.”

The elevator doors opened.

Ethan stepped inside.

Vanessa followed.

Neither spoke during the ascent.

On the twenty-eighth floor, two men in dark suits stood outside a pair of carved doors.

Beyond them was the Halcyon Crown’s private Atlantic Boardroom.

Ethan recognized one of the men standing inside through the glass.

Martin Keller.

Calloway Maritime’s senior outside counsel.

His lawyer.

Ethan pushed toward the doors.

One security guard stepped in front of him.

“Private meeting, sir.”

“That’s my attorney in there.”

“And he’s attending on behalf of another party.”

Ethan stared through the glass.

Grace sat at the conference table.

Declan was beside her.

Martin Keller sat across from them.

So did three bankers Ethan recognized.

And at the center of the table lay the black leather folder.

Grace opened it.

Ethan watched her remove a document.

She signed.

Then another.

And another.

Vanessa reached the hallway behind him.

The color disappeared from her face.

“No.”

Ethan turned.

“What?”

Vanessa stared through the glass.

“Ethan, we need to leave.”

“What did she sign?”

“I don’t know.”

“You obviously know something.”

Vanessa backed away.

Inside the room, Declan signed the final page.

Martin Keller checked his watch.

“Five forty-eight,” he announced.

One banker extended his hand toward Grace.

“Congratulations, Mrs. Calloway.”

Grace shook it.

Declan rose.

The doors opened.

Ethan pushed forward.

“What the hell did you just sign?”

Silence filled the room.

Grace closed her pen.

Martin Keller looked uncomfortable.

Declan did not.

Grace slid the documents into the folder.

“I sold something.”

“What?”

“Something that belonged to me.”

Ethan laughed once in disbelief.

“You flew to an island seven months pregnant to sell something with Declan Pierce?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

Grace looked toward Martin.

“Tell him.”

Martin removed his glasses.

“Ethan, perhaps we should discuss this privately.”

“Tell me now.”

Grace answered instead.

“Forty-one percent.”

Ethan froze.

“Forty-one percent of what?”

“Calloway Maritime.”

Nobody moved.

Then Ethan laughed.

It sounded almost desperate.

“That’s impossible.”

“No,” Martin said softly. “It isn’t.”

Ethan looked at him.

“My family owns Calloway Maritime.”

“Your family owns fifty-nine percent.”

Ethan’s mouth went dry.

“And the rest?”

Martin looked at Grace.

“She did.”

Ethan stared at his wife.

Grace had never held an executive position in his company.

She had never attended shareholder meetings.

She had never even argued when Ethan described the company as the Calloway family legacy.

“That makes no sense.”

Grace rested both hands over her belly.

“My father’s trust held thirty percent. My grandmother’s estate held eleven. When I turned thirty-five last month, both transferred to me.”

Ethan remembered her birthday.

He had sent flowers from Chicago.

He had been with Vanessa.

Declan stepped forward.

“Pierce Global purchased Grace’s entire position at 5:48 p.m.”

Ethan’s heart began pounding.

“You sold forty-one percent of my company to him?”

Grace’s expression hardened.

“No, Ethan.”

She stepped closer.

“I sold forty-one percent of my company.”

Vanessa suddenly turned toward the elevator.

Grace noticed.

“So soon?”

Vanessa stopped.

Grace opened the folder again.

“There’s something else.”

She removed a photograph.

Ethan expected evidence of the affair.

Instead, Grace placed an image of a bank transfer on the table.

$18,600,000.

Recipient:

Reed Strategic Holdings LLC.

Ethan slowly looked at Vanessa.

Grace did too.

“I came here because my husband was cheating on me.”

She paused.

“But that isn’t why I sold my shares.”

Vanessa’s lips parted.

Grace’s voice became almost a whisper.

“I sold them because somebody has been stealing from Calloway Maritime.”

May you like

Then she looked straight at Vanessa.

“And I think she knows exactly who.”
