Chapter 9 - The Sins of the Fathers

The aftermath in the cathedral was swift and merciless.

Don Corrado and the council elders immediately voted to strip Dominic of his name, his rank, and his assets. The traitor was dragged out into the rain by his own former mercenaries, destined for a federal penitentiary facility where syndicate justice would ensure he spent the remainder of his days in a cold, windowless box, stripped of every ounce of power he had ever dreamed of possessing.

By midnight, the cathedral had emptied. The capos had returned to their territories with clear, non-negotiable instructions: the Moretti-Stone alliance was restored, and any dissent would be met with absolute annihilation.

Only Lazero and Callie remained beneath the high vaulted arches of the nave.

Lazero stood by the iron gate of the sanctuary, holding an old leather-bound journal he had retrieved from the cathedral’s historical archives—the private records kept by his own late father. He flipped through the aged parchment pages, his brow furrowed with deep emotion.

"You need to read this," Lazero said quietly, handing the journal to Callie.

Callie took the book with cautious fingers. Her eyes scanned the faded cursive ink written in the steady hand of Lazero’s father, dating back twenty years:

“Marco Moretti came to me tonight with his daughter, Callista. The girl has the eyes of a falcon and the mind of a master strategist. If anything should happen to our generation in this war, my son Lazero must be bound by oath to protect her with his life, even if he does not know her name. The bloodline must endure.”

Callie looked up from the page, her amber eyes shimmering with unshed tears. For eight years, she had believed she was utterly alone in the world—a feral ghost hunting down vengeance in the shadows, trusting no one, hiding behind oversized cardigans and fake glasses.

"He knew," she whispered, her voice catching.

"My father died before he could tell me the full truth," Lazero said, stepping close to her. He reached out, his rough, tattooed fingers gently brushing a stray lock of honey-brown hair behind her ear. "For three years, you sat outside my office watching my every move. You thought you were hunting me."

"I was," she said, leaning slightly into the warmth of his touch. "And every single day, you proved that you weren't the monster I thought you were."

"And you," Lazero smiled, a genuine, breathtaking smile that transformed his rugged, intimidating face. "You played the clumsy secretary who dropped file folders and asked for grammar corrections, while you were quietly balancing my entire empire and keeping my enemies at bay."

"Nobody pays attention to the secretary," Callie murmured, a faint smirk returning to her lips.

"I did," Lazero whispered, his voice dropping into an intimate, velvet tone. "Even when you wore those ridiculous glasses and oversized sweaters... I noticed you every single day, Callista. I just couldn't figure out why my heart raced whenever you walked into the room."

The rain pounded against the stained glass high above, washing away eight years of blood, deceit, and ghosts. In the quiet sanctuary, surrounded by candlelight, the last Don of the Stone family and the rightful Queen of the Moretti bloodline stood together, no longer separated by lies, ledgers, or shadows.
