Chapter 8 - THE LEDGER OF THE DAMNED

Damian refused to let Elena go alone.

She refused to let him decide for her.

For nearly twenty minutes, they argued in the library while Rosalind prepared a secure vehicle and Damian's attorney verified the location of the meeting.

"Your mother specifically told you to stay away from me," Damian said.

"She also told me not to trust anyone who claimed to have saved my life. That could mean you."

"It could."

The answer surprised her.

Damian stepped closer.

"I'm not asking you to believe I'm innocent. I'm asking you to give me a chance to prove what I am."

Elena searched his face.

"And if I discover your family destroyed mine?"

"Then you deserve to know the truth, even if it destroys me."

They agreed to go together, with a security team positioned beyond sight.

The meeting point was an abandoned train station near the river.

Maria waited beneath a broken clock.

She was older, thinner, and carried herself like a woman who had spent years expecting someone to appear behind her.

When Elena stepped into the light, Maria began to cry.

"My baby."

Elena stopped several feet away.

"Don't call me that."

Maria's face crumpled.

"You have every right to hate me."

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I thought it was the only way to keep you alive."

"You could have called."

"I did. Every time I tried, someone intercepted the message."

"Who?"

Maria looked at Damian.

"His father. My employer. The man who ordered me to hide the ledger."

Damian's expression hardened.

"My father said you helped him survive."

"I did. And then I discovered what he had done."

Maria opened her bag and removed a thick envelope.

"The ledger doesn't just identify the people who financed the bombing. It contains the original ownership records for the Reyes businesses."

Damian took the envelope.

"Why would that matter now?"

"Because your father didn't build the empire alone. Your mother inherited half of it from her family. After her death, Rafael transferred those assets without the family's consent."

Damian stared at the documents.

The financial records were real.

The signatures matched.

His mother had owned a controlling interest in several companies. The assets had been moved through a maze of shell corporations and eventually placed under Damian's name.

Someone had used his inheritance to conceal the original theft.

Maria continued.

"Your father discovered the scheme too late. He wanted to expose it, but he was afraid the people involved would kill you. So he disappeared and let Rafael take the blame."

"And you?" Elena asked. "Why did you vanish?"

"Because I found out who ordered the bombing."

"Who?"

Maria's eyes filled with fear.

"Isabella's mother."

Damian shook his head.

"That woman died twenty years ago."

"No," Maria said. "A woman died under her name. The real woman escaped, changed her identity, and continued operating through the foundation."

"Where is she now?"

Maria looked at the station entrance.

"Closer than you think."

A vehicle appeared beyond the tracks.

Then another.

Damian's security team signaled an approaching threat.

Maria grabbed Elena's hand.

"There's something else. Your father wasn't a victim of the bombing. He was the man who helped design the operation."

Elena pulled away.

"You're lying."

"He worked as an accountant for the people who financed it. He discovered they planned to kill everyone involved, and he tried to stop them. They killed him before he could expose the conspiracy."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I wanted you to have a life that wasn't built on blood."

The first gunshot rang out.

Damian pulled both women behind a concrete barrier as his security team returned fire.

Through the smoke, a figure approached the platform.

Isabella.

She held a pistol in one hand and a small black case in the other.

"Give me the ledger," she shouted.

Damian stood, keeping Elena behind him.

"You're going to have to explain a great deal."

Isabella's eyes were wet.

"I've spent my entire life cleaning up after people who should never have been allowed to hold power."

"Did you arrange the bombing?"

"No."

"Did you know Maria was alive?"

"Yes."

"Did you send Victor to threaten Elena?"

Isabella lowered the gun.

"Yes."

Elena stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because Victor told me your mother was preparing to expose everyone. I believed he was trying to prevent a massacre."

"You threatened my brother."

"I made sure he was safe."

"You used him to control me!"

Isabella's face twisted with shame.

"I know."

Damian took a step toward her.

"Then put the gun down."

Isabella looked at Elena.

"There's one thing you need to understand. I didn't bring you here to kill you."

She opened the black case.

Inside lay a second ledger.

"This is the original."

Maria went pale.

"That's impossible."

Isabella looked at Damian.

"Your father gave it to me six months ago. He told me to destroy it."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because I discovered a name in the final pages."

She turned the book toward them.

The last entry had been written in fresh ink.

ELENA CRUZ — BENEFICIARY, 51% OWNERSHIP.

Beneath it was a signature.

Damian recognized it.

His mother's.

Then Isabella whispered, "Elena isn't just the key to exposing the conspiracy. She's the legal heir to everything your family stole."

A red laser appeared on her chest.

Damian turned.

A sniper was aiming from the roof of the station.

The shot rang out.

Isabella fell.

And as Damian rushed toward her, she grabbed his wrist and gasped:

"Your father ordered it. Not the bombing. The second attempt."

May you like

Then her hand went limp.
