Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN ELENA HAD BURIED

Rafael survived the shooting, but the bullet had lodged dangerously close to his spine.

As surgeons worked, Damian ordered the estate sealed and every employee questioned. The shooter had entered through a service passage that should have been accessible only to members of the household.

Someone inside had helped.

Elena sat alone in the library, staring at Rafael's blood on her sleeve.

She had not seen the shooter.

But she had heard the voice.

A woman's voice.

One that had haunted her dreams since childhood.

Damian entered quietly.

"Tell me what you remember."

Elena shook her head.

"I can't."

"You can tell me anything."

"No, I can't!" Her voice broke. "Because if it's true, everything I believed about my mother is a lie."

Damian sat across from her.

"Then we'll find out what is true."

She looked at him.

"You don't understand what it means to lose someone twice."

He didn't argue.

Instead, he placed a glass of water on the table and waited until she was ready.

Finally, Elena spoke.

"When I was twelve, my mother used to sing when she cooked. She had a small scar near her left eyebrow. She always wore a silver ring. The police showed us photographs of the burned apartment and told us she hadn't suffered."

She swallowed.

"But I never saw her body."

Damian thought of the ring found at the warehouse.

The ring engraved with the Cruz name.

He retrieved it from his pocket and placed it in front of her.

Elena stared.

"This is hers."

"Are you sure?"

She nodded.

"My mother never took it off."

Damian turned the ring over.

A tiny seam ran along the inside edge. He pressed it with his thumbnail.

A narrow compartment opened.

Inside was a miniature memory card.

They retrieved a secure reader from Damian's office and loaded the contents onto an isolated computer.

The card contained a video.

A woman appeared on the screen, older than Elena remembered, her dark hair streaked with gray. A scar marked her left eyebrow.

Elena stopped breathing.

"Mom?"

The woman looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, my daughter, then someone has finally found the truth I spent years trying to hide."

Elena covered her mouth.

"I never wanted you involved. I believed distance would protect you and Mateo. But the people who arranged the bombing were never satisfied with what they took from us."

The woman lifted a folder.

"The ledger identifies the people who financed the operation. It also proves that the Reyes fortune was built on money stolen from innocent families."

Damian's face tightened.

His father had told him about the conspiracy, but not this.

Maria continued.

"One person helped me survive. Another sold me out. I don't know which of them is still alive."

She leaned closer to the camera.

"Elena, if you have found this recording, do not trust the person who claims to have saved your life."

The video ended.

Elena was crying too hard to speak.

Damian paused the recording and examined the file information.

The video had been recorded six months earlier.

Maria was alive when Isabella met Damian's father.

"She knew where your mother was," he said.

Elena wiped her cheeks.

"Then we find her."

They traced the memory card's last access to a private storage facility outside Chicago. The facility belonged to a company registered under a false name, but the property taxes were paid through one of Isabella's foundations.

Inside a locked unit, they found a suitcase, several photographs, and a stack of medical records.

One photograph showed Maria standing beside Isabella.

Another showed Maria with a man Damian recognized immediately.

Victor Hale.

On the back, someone had written:

THE WOMAN WHO SAVED ELENA WAS NEVER HER MOTHER.

Elena stared at the words.

"What does that mean?"

Damian had no answer.

Then a phone rang inside the suitcase.

It was an old burner phone.

A woman's voice came through.

"Elena, sweetheart. You found my things."

Elena gripped the table.

"Mom?"

"Listen carefully. You have less than an hour before they reach you."

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you that yet."

"Why did you leave me?"

A long silence followed.

Then Maria whispered, "Because I knew what you would become if you learned the truth."

"What truth?"

Her mother's voice trembled.

"Your father wasn't the man you were told he was."

Elena went completely still.

"My father died before I was born."

"No," Maria said. "He was killed because of who he was."

A door slammed somewhere near the caller.

Maria gasped.

"Elena, if Damian is with you, get away from him."

The line went dead.

Damian stared at the phone.

Elena looked at him, torn between the man who had protected her and the mother who had finally returned.

Then another message appeared.
