Chapter 6 - The House Where Secrets Were Kept

The Connecticut property stood behind iron gates at the end of a wooded road.

It looked less like a medical facility than a forgotten country estate.

Damian arrived with Vincent, Caitlyn, two security specialists, and a physician experienced in transporting neurologically impaired patients.

He had refused Caitlyn's request to stay behind.

Not because he wanted her in danger.

Because he had finally understood something important.

Noah was her family.

She deserved to be present when they found him.

“Stay close,” Damian told her.

“I will.”

“And if anything feels wrong—”

“I know.”

He looked at her.

“You don't have to pretend you're not afraid.”

She swallowed.

“Neither do you.”

For a moment, Damian almost smiled.

Then the gates opened.

A woman in a navy cardigan stepped onto the front porch.

She appeared to be in her early sixties, with dark eyes and silver-streaked hair.

Damian stopped walking.

Something about her face struck him.

Not familiarity exactly.

Recognition without memory.

“Damian,” she whispered.

He stared.

“Eleanor?”

Her eyes filled.

“My son.”

Caitlyn felt Damian go rigid beside her.

Eleanor took one step forward.

Then stopped.

She seemed to understand that twenty years of silence couldn't be erased by an embrace.

“I know you have questions.”

Damian's voice was flat.

“Where's Noah?”

“Inside. He's safe.”

“Why did you take him?”

“I didn't.”

Vincent moved closer.

“Then who brought him here?”

“Arthur Mercer.”

Damian's jaw tightened.

“Where is he?”

“Gone.”

Eleanor led them into a medical suite.

Noah lay in a hospital bed near a large window.

His chest rose and fell steadily.

A nurse checked his vital signs.

Caitlyn ran to him.

“Noah.”

She touched his face.

“Hey, sweetheart. It's me.”

His eyes shifted.

She took his hand.

“I'm here.”

His fingers moved weakly around hers.

Caitlyn began crying.

Damian turned away, giving her privacy.

But he couldn't escape the sound of her relief.

It reached somewhere inside him that he had kept sealed for years.

After the physician confirmed Noah was stable, Eleanor explained.

Mercer had arrived claiming Noah's life was in danger.

He had provided medical records and a transfer authorization.

Eleanor believed he was acting under an emergency protection arrangement.

“Why would you trust him?” Damian asked.

“Because Arthur helped your father hide me.”

Damian stared.

“Hide you from whom?”

Eleanor looked toward Vincent.

“From the people who killed Thomas.”

Silence settled.

“Names,” Damian said.

Eleanor shook her head.

“I don't know all of them.”

“Then tell me the ones you do.”

“Your father discovered a criminal financial network operating through shipping companies, charities, and offshore trusts. He helped build parts of it before he realized what it had become.”

Damian's face tightened.

“He tried to leave.”

“Yes.”

“And they killed him.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Your father made copies of the financial records. Michael and Rebecca Elmore were helping him preserve evidence.”

Caitlyn looked up.

“My parents?”

“They believed the archive could protect witnesses and expose the people responsible.”

“Where is it?” Damian asked.

Eleanor looked toward Caitlyn.

“Your mother knew.”

Caitlyn frowned.

“She never told me.”

“She may have left you something.”

Caitlyn shook her head.

“We lost almost everything after the accident.”

“Not everything,” Eleanor said.

She reached into a drawer.

Inside was a photograph of Rebecca Elmore wearing a small silver necklace.

Caitlyn froze.

“I have that necklace.”

Damian turned.

“Where?”

“At home.”

Eleanor pointed to the pendant.

“Your mother designed the hiding place herself.”

Caitlyn touched her throat.

She had worn the necklace for three years.

Every birthday.

Every hospital visit.

Every lonely Christmas.

She had never imagined it held anything more than a memory.

Damian's phone rang.

Vincent answered.

His expression darkened.

“Boss, we have a problem.”

“What?”

“Someone leaked photographs of you entering this property.”

Damian frowned.

“To whom?”

“Federal investigators.”

A second message arrived.

Vincent read it.

Then looked at Damian.

“They've issued a warrant for your arrest.”

Caitlyn stood.

“For what?”

Vincent swallowed.

“Conspiracy, financial fraud, and obstruction connected to Thomas Hamilton's old companies.”

Damian looked toward Eleanor.

Then at the pendant in Caitlyn's photograph.

May you like

Someone had spent decades keeping those records hidden.

And now that someone was prepared to destroy him before he could find them.
