Chapter 5 - The Woman in the Photograph

Damian had never questioned who his mother was.
Evelyn Hamilton had raised him in a mansion overlooking the Hudson River.
She had attended his school ceremonies, chosen his tutors, and taught him that weakness was something other people exploited.
She had also buried his father without shedding a visible tear.
Now a letter suggested the foundation of his childhood was a lie.
“Read it again,” Damian said.
Vincent obeyed.
If anything happens to me, protect the boy. Damian must never learn who his real mother is.
Caitlyn watched Damian's expression.
For the first time since she had met him, he looked genuinely lost.
“Maybe your father meant someone else,” she said.
Damian shook his head.
“He wrote my name.”
Vincent examined the rest of the letter.
“There's more.”
The letter referred to a woman named Eleanor Vale.
According to Thomas, Eleanor had been placed under a protected identity after witnessing a violent confrontation involving several powerful families.
Thomas had believed exposing her would put both Eleanor and Damian in danger.
Damian looked toward the windows.
“Eleanor Vale.”
He repeated the name as though it might awaken a memory.
Caitlyn gently touched his wrist.
“Do you remember her?”
“No.”
“Then maybe your mother can explain.”
Damian's expression hardened.
“Evelyn doesn't explain things. She decides which truths other people deserve.”
An hour later, they drove to the Hamilton family estate.
Evelyn was waiting in the library.
At sixty-four, she remained elegant and intimidating, with silver-blonde hair and the posture of a woman who considered apologies a form of surrender.
She looked at Caitlyn first.
“Your secretary?”
Damian didn't answer.
Evelyn raised an eyebrow.
“How unusual.”
“Who is Eleanor Vale?” Damian asked.
Evelyn's expression didn't change.
But her hand stopped moving over the rim of her teacup.
“Where did you hear that name?”
“Answer me.”
“Lower your voice.”
Damian stepped closer.
“Who is she?”
Evelyn placed the cup down.
“A mistake your father made.”
“My mother?”
Silence.
Caitlyn felt the air leave the room.
Evelyn looked toward the fireplace.
“Your father had an affair before we married.”
Damian stared at her.
“You told me you were my mother.”
“I raised you.”
“That wasn't my question.”
Evelyn's voice sharpened.
“I fed you when you were sick. I sat outside operating rooms. I protected you from men who would have used you to destroy this family.”
“Where is Eleanor?”
“I don't know.”
“Is she alive?”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I don't know.”
Damian stepped back.
Twenty years of certainty had vanished in less than a minute.
Caitlyn watched him struggle not to show it.
Then Evelyn turned toward her.
“And you,” she said.
Caitlyn stiffened.
“Excuse me?”
“You should never have come into this house.”
Damian's eyes narrowed.
“Careful.”
Evelyn ignored him.
“Your parents were warned to stay away from Hamilton business.”
Caitlyn's face went pale.
“You knew my parents?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know they were killed?”
Evelyn hesitated.
That hesitation was answer enough to change the room.
Damian moved between them.
“Tell us what you know.”
Evelyn stood.
“Michael Elmore was a decent man who became involved in something he didn't understand.”
“What?”
“A financial structure your father created to protect people.”
“Which people?” Caitlyn demanded.
Evelyn looked at Damian.
“People who would be killed if their names became public.”
Vincent's phone rang.
He stepped aside.
A moment later, his face changed.
“Boss.”
Damian turned.
“What now?”
“We have a location on Noah.”
Caitlyn grabbed the edge of a chair.
“Where?”
“A private medical property in Connecticut.”
“Is he alive?”
“Yes. Our surveillance confirms he's there.”
Caitlyn began crying with relief.
But Vincent wasn't finished.
“There's a complication.”
Damian waited.
“The property belongs to Eleanor Vale.”
Evelyn went white.
For the first time that evening, fear broke through her composure.
“No,” she whispered.
Damian turned toward her.
“What?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“If Eleanor is alive, then Arthur Mercer isn't trying to steal your father's archive.”
“What is he doing?”
May you like
Evelyn looked directly at Caitlyn.
“He's trying to make you open it.”
