Chapter 10 - The Door Was Open

One year later, Khloe stood beneath another chandelier.

For several seconds, she simply looked upward.

Crystal lights scattered across the ballroom ceiling.

A jazz quartet played.

Champagne moved through the crowd.

The similarities should have hurt.

They didn't.

This ballroom belonged to another memory now.

“Mommy!”

Khloe turned.

Elena toddled across the carpet wearing a tiny emerald-green dress.

Dominic followed two steps behind with both hands hovering dramatically around her.

“Don't run.”

Elena ran faster.

“Khloe.”

“She'll survive.”

“She has no sense of danger.”

“She learned walking three months ago.”

“Exactly. She's inexperienced.”

Khloe laughed.

Dominic scooped Elena up before she collided with a waiter.

He wore a midnight-blue tuxedo.

Khloe had teased him when he chose it.

“Trying to recreate our first kiss?”

“No.”

“Liar.”

“Possibly.”

Tonight's event was the first annual Elena Bennett Foundation gala.

The foundation provided emergency housing, legal assistance and financial counseling to women leaving controlling relationships.

Khloe had built it with recovered funds from the Hale litigation.

Not Dominic's money.

Hers.

That mattered to her.

Dominic understood why.

Hale Development no longer existed.

Its legitimate assets had been sold.

Money recovered through civil proceedings was distributed among defrauded investors and victims.

Khloe's divorce had been finalized months earlier.

She had reclaimed her maiden name legally.

She had also completed the graduate degree Derek once convinced her to abandon.

On her office wall hung a framed master's diploma.

Beside it was something she valued more.

A crayon drawing from Elena.

Three figures holding hands.

Khloe.

Elena.

Dominic.

Sofia approached carrying champagne.

“You're staring at him again.”

Khloe smiled.

“I am not.”

“You absolutely are.”

Across the ballroom, Dominic was allowing Elena to pull his bow tie crooked.

Nobody else in Chicago would dare touch Dominic Moretti's tie.

Elena apparently considered it public property.

“Still strange?” Sofia asked.

“What?”

“Being happy.”

Khloe considered the question.

“Sometimes.”

Sofia nodded.

“Good strange?”

“The best kind.”

Vanessa arrived moments later.

Her life had changed too.

She had cooperated fully with investigators, completed probation connected to lesser financial offenses, and started working for a nonprofit financial transparency group.

She and Khloe weren't best friends.

Life didn't need to become that tidy.

But they had become something more realistic.

Two women who understood exactly how the same man had manipulated their weaknesses differently.

Vanessa hugged Khloe.

“You look beautiful.”

“So do you.”

Vanessa glanced toward Dominic.

“He's been touching his jacket pocket every thirty seconds.”

Khloe frowned.

“What?”

Sofia immediately grabbed Vanessa's arm.

“Stop talking.”

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“Oh.”

Khloe looked between them.

“What is happening?”

“Nothing,” Sofia said.

“Terrible liars.”

Dominic approached.

Elena was now in Sofia's arms.

“Walk with me?”

Khloe studied him suspiciously.

“Why?”

“Because apparently asking my girlfriend to walk with me now requires a federal investigation.”

She smiled.

“Occupational hazard.”

He offered his hand.

Khloe took it.

They walked into the hallway.

The same hotel.

Khloe realized it only after seeing the antique mirrors.

Her steps slowed.

“Dominic.”

“Yes.”

“This is where—”

“I know.”

The hallway where Derek grabbed her.

Where Vanessa humiliated her.

Where Dominic appeared.

Where everything ended.

And began.

Dominic stopped beside the same marble console table.

Khloe stared.

“You planned this.”

“Yes.”

He reached into his jacket.

Khloe immediately understood.

Her breath caught.

“Dominic…”

“Before you panic, I'm not asking you to need me.”

That nearly broke her.

He lowered himself onto one knee.

The most feared man in the room.

Kneeling.

Not commanding.

Asking.

He opened a small box.

Inside was a simple diamond ring.

“Khloe Harper Bennett, the first time I kissed you, it was because I thought you needed someone standing beside you.”

His voice tightened.

“I was wrong.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“You didn't need someone to save you. You needed enough space to remember you could save yourself.”

Khloe covered her mouth.

Dominic continued.

“I don't want to own your house.”

She laughed through tears.

“I don't want your accounts.”

More laughter.

“I don't want to decide where you go, what you wear, who you become, or how loudly you speak.”

His eyes remained on hers.

“I want to spend my life discovering those things with you.”

Khloe cried openly now.

“So I'm not asking you to belong to me.”

He held up the ring.

“I'm asking whether I can belong beside you.”

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then a tiny voice came from behind the curtain.

“Say yes!”

Khloe turned.

Sofia stood there holding Elena.

Vanessa covered her face.

“You were supposed to stay hidden!”

Elena clapped.

“Yes! Yes! Yes!”

Dominic sighed.

“I had a considerably more elegant ending planned.”

Khloe laughed.

Then looked down at him.

“Yes.”

Dominic stopped.

“What?”

“Yes.”

His expression changed completely.

“You're certain?”

“Dominic.”

“Yes?”

“If you ask again, I'm changing my answer.”

He stood immediately.

She laughed as he slid the ring onto her finger.

Then he kissed her.

Softly.

The first time Dominic Moretti kissed Khloe in that hotel, hundreds of people watched.

It had been scandal.

Rebellion.

A declaration neither understood.

This time only the people who mattered were there.

When they returned to the ballroom, applause erupted.

Dominic looked horrified.

“You told everyone?”

Sofia shrugged.

“Contingency planning.”

“You're fired.”

“I don't work for you.”

“Then you're hired and immediately fired.”

Elena squealed.

Khloe laughed until her cheeks hurt.

Later that night, after the ballroom emptied, they returned home.

Their home.

Not Derek's.

Not Dominic's.

The house Khloe had eventually chosen to share with him.

Dominic carried sleeping Elena upstairs.

Khloe followed.

He placed the child inside her crib and carefully pulled the blanket to her chest.

Then they stood together in the doorway.

“She looks like you,” Dominic whispered.

“Poor child.”

“Fishing for compliments?”

“Always.”

“You're beautiful.”

“I know.”

Dominic smiled.

“That confidence is becoming dangerous.”

Khloe looked toward the hallway.

There were no cameras watching her.

No footsteps she feared.

No husband checking whether a door had been locked.

No accounts she couldn't access.

No permission required.

She walked toward her bedroom.

Dominic remained behind.

Khloe noticed.

“Aren't you coming?”

He smiled.

“Waiting to be invited.”

Even after all this time.

Choice.

Always choice.

Khloe extended her hand.

“Come home.”

Dominic took it.

Before entering, Khloe glanced toward the nursery.

Elena slept peacefully.

The night-light painted tiny stars across the ceiling.

Once, Khloe had believed happiness would arrive dramatically.

A perfect marriage.

A beautiful house.

Enough money.

Someone powerful enough to protect her.

She had been wrong.

Happiness was quieter.

It was her own bank card inside her wallet.

Her name on her diploma.

Her daughter's laughter downstairs.

A bedroom she could lock whenever she wanted.

A man who knocked even when he possessed the key.

And the knowledge that if everything disappeared tomorrow, she would still have herself.

Dominic touched her engagement ring.

“Regretting it already?”

Khloe pretended to consider.

“Ask me after you change Elena's diaper tomorrow morning.”

“Done.”

“Six a.m.”

His confidence weakened.

“Six?”

She laughed.

“You survived being shot.”

“That was different.”

“How?”

“I was unconscious for the worst part.”

Khloe laughed again.

Then Dominic pulled her gently into his arms.

“Khloe?”

“Hmm?”

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For choosing me.”

She looked at him.

“No.”

He frowned.

Khloe touched his face.

“Thank you for understanding that I had a choice.”

His expression softened.

She kissed him once.

Then walked into the bedroom.

Dominic followed.

Behind them, the door remained slightly open.

Not because Khloe was afraid to close it.

Not because someone had forbidden her from locking it.

But because, finally, it didn't matter.

She could close it.

She could lock it.

She could open it.

She could leave.

She could stay.

And tonight, with her daughter sleeping safely down the hall and the man she loved walking beside her rather than ahead of her, Khloe made the simplest decision of her new life.

May you like

She stayed.

Because this time, staying was freedom.
