Chapter 1 - The Kiss That Silenced the Ballroom

A marriage was supposed to end in recognizable ways: screaming matches, shattered plates, perhaps the quiet signing of papers across a lawyer’s desk.

Khloe had never imagined hers would end inside a crowded ballroom with her husband’s hand resting on his mistress’s waist while she stood only a few feet away, 6 months pregnant and choking on humiliation.

Derek wanted to break her in front of the city’s elite.

He nearly succeeded.

Then the most dangerous man in the room walked toward her, pulled her close, and kissed her.

The baby kicked hard against Khloe’s ribs.

She winced and pressed 1 hand against the tight emerald silk of her maternity gown. It was a beautiful dress, purchased 3 months earlier when Derek still made an effort to pretend he cared about her.

Tonight, it felt like a straitjacket.

The charity gala was in full swing around them. Tuxedos and shimmering gowns moved beneath chandeliers while a jazz quartet played softly in the background. The ballroom air felt heavy with expensive perfume, gin, and recycled oxygen.

Khloe took a shallow breath, trying to control the persistent nausea that had followed her through the second trimester.

Derek stood approximately 2 feet away.

Physically, the distance was nothing.

Emotionally, it was a canyon.

He held a glass of scotch and laughed at something a city councilman had said. His hair was perfectly styled, his jaw sharp, his tuxedo immaculate.

He had not looked at Khloe in more than 1 hour.

“Derek.”

She moved slightly closer.

Her lower back had tightened into a knot of pain.

“My feet are swelling. Can we find a table?”

Derek did not turn.

He shifted his shoulder instead, effectively blocking her from the councilman’s view.

“Not right now, Khloe. I’m working.”

“You’re drinking.”

That earned her a glance.

His blue eyes were cold and irritated.

“I’m networking, which pays for this lifestyle. If you’re tired, go sit in the corner.”

Then he walked away and disappeared into a cluster of investors near the bar.

Khloe remained beside an enormous floral arrangement, aware of the way people’s eyes moved over her.

She knew what they saw.

The ignored wife.

Pregnant.

Guarded.

An obligation her husband had already mentally discarded.

Then she saw Vanessa.

Vanessa wore red.

The dress plunged at the front and left her back almost completely bare. Vanessa had joined Derek’s real estate company as an associate, then became his assistant, and eventually became the poorly concealed secret the entire city seemed to know.

Khloe had known for 2 months.

She found hotel receipts inside Derek’s coat.

When she confronted him, Derek calmly poured himself a drink, sat on the edge of their bed, and told her she was hormonal and imagining things.

He said she was suffocating him.

Then he told her that if she tried to leave, he would keep her tied up in court until she did not have enough money to buy diapers.

So Khloe stayed.

She stayed because she was pregnant.

She stayed because Derek had made leaving feel impossible.

Vanessa crossed the ballroom carrying a champagne flute and headed directly toward Derek.

Khloe watched a cold dread settle into her stomach.

Vanessa stopped beside him.

There was no professional distance.

She leaned close.

Her hand brushed his bicep.

Derek did not step away.

He smiled.

Not the tight social smile he gave Khloe.

A genuine, easy smile she had not seen directed toward her in almost 1 year.

Khloe felt her chest tighten.

The baby rolled again, pressing against her bladder.

Physical discomfort merged with betrayal.

People had begun watching.

Wives of Derek’s investors glanced toward Khloe, then toward Derek and Vanessa, whispering behind raised hands.

The humiliation had become something physical.

It tasted like ash.

Khloe needed to leave.

She could not remain there as the punchline to a joke everyone else already understood.

She tightened her grip around her clutch and moved toward the heavy ballroom doors.

Her heels struck the marble with every painful step.

Each movement sent a jolt through her calves.

She kept her chin up.

Make it to the car.

Reach the valet.

Cry somewhere dark and private.

“Khloe, wait.”

She froze in the hallway.

For 1 second, she closed her eyes and gathered whatever dignity remained.

Then she turned.

Derek was coming toward her.

Vanessa walked beside him.

The corridor outside the ballroom was quieter, lined with antique mirrors and heavy velvet curtains. The space made the confrontation feel more enclosed.

“Where are you going?”

Derek caught up with her.

He did not look worried.

He looked inconvenienced.

“Home. I’m tired, Derek. I asked you to let me sit down. You told me to go away, so I’m leaving.”

“You don’t just walk out of an event like this without telling me.”

His voice dropped.

“It looks bad. People are asking where my wife is.”

“Are they?”

Khloe looked deliberately toward Vanessa.

“I think you have that covered.”

Vanessa sighed with exaggerated patience.

“Khloe, please don’t be difficult. Derek is under a lot of pressure with the new development deal. He needs a supportive partner tonight.”

Khloe stared at her.

Vanessa’s skin was flawless.

Her stomach flat.

She looked like money, freedom, and everything Khloe felt she had lost.

“Do not speak to me.”

The words were quiet, but rage trembled beneath them.

Derek scoffed.

“Oh, stop it. Don’t do this dramatic act right now. Vanessa is a colleague. She’s helping me court the Moretti account. You’re being ridiculous.”

“I saw the way you were looking at her. I see the way everyone in there looks at me. You brought her here to humiliate me. You wanted me to stand in a corner while you paraded your mistress around just to prove you could.”

Derek stepped closer.

Scotch was heavy on his breath.

His public charm disappeared.

“Listen to me very carefully.”

He grabbed Khloe’s elbow.

Too hard.

“You are embarrassing yourself. You look huge. You’re sweating, and you’re acting like a paranoid lunatic. Go back into that ballroom, sit at table 4, and smile. Or I swear to God, Khloe, I will freeze the joint accounts tomorrow.”

Khloe stared at him.

This was the man she married.

The same man who once held her hand when the ultrasound technician found their baby’s heartbeat.

Now he looked at her with contempt.

Vanessa placed a manicured hand on Derek’s arm.

“Derek, leave it. She’s hormonal. You know how women get in this state. It’s not her fault she can’t handle the pressure.”

Khloe’s anger finally became larger than her fear.

She tore her arm out of Derek’s grip.

“Don’t touch me.”

Her voice echoed along the hallway.

“Both of you. Stay away from me.”

Derek hardened.

He stepped toward her again.

He intended to intimidate her back into the small space he had spent years building around her.

“I don’t think she is.”

The voice came from near the coat check.

Deep.

Gravelly.

It did not ask for anyone’s attention.

It took it.

Derek stopped.

His entire body changed.

The aggressive husband vanished.

In his place stood a frightened subordinate.

A man emerged from the shadows.

Khloe knew very little about the city’s underworld, but she knew Dominic Moretti.

Everyone did.
