Chapter 9 - THREE YEARS

Six months later, Ferrara Holdings looked nothing like Domenico's empire.

That was intentional.

Illegal operations were dismantled.

Front companies were closed.

Shipping routes were audited.

Raffaele spent countless hours with attorneys separating legitimate businesses from the organization his family had built in darkness.

Some men called him weak.

Those men generally discovered weakness and restraint were not the same thing.

Sera became chairwoman.

The announcement caused chaos.

Financial newspapers wanted photographs.

Society pages wanted the mysterious Mrs. Ferrara.

Former associates wanted to know how the quiet girl from the library had ended up controlling billions.

Sera ignored all of them.

Mostly.

At a charity gala in Manhattan, a reporter finally asked the question everyone apparently considered fascinating.

"Mrs. Ferrara, people say your husband didn't notice you before the marriage. Is that true?"

Sera looked toward Raffaele.

He stood ten feet away speaking to Lorenzo.

He immediately sensed trouble.

"What did you tell her?" he asked later.

"The truth."

His eyes narrowed.

"Which version?"

"That you were visually impaired."

"Sera."

"And emotionally underdeveloped."

"Sera."

"And tragically arrogant."

He pulled her closer.

"You enjoy being married far too much."

"Immensely."

He kissed her.

Cameras flashed.

Neither cared anymore.

One year became two.

The estate was rebuilt.

Antonio's name was added to the family memorial.

Raffaele established a foundation in his name for families of witnesses forced into protective relocation.

Sera never asked him to.

That mattered more.

On the anniversary of Antonio's death, she found Raffaele at the cemetery placing flowers beside the grave.

"You came without me."

"I wanted to talk to him."

"About?"

Raffaele looked uncomfortable.

Sera became suspicious.

"What did you do?"

"Nothing."

"You have the face."

"What face?"

"The one you make before announcing something unreasonable."

He reached into his coat.

Sera's eyes widened.

"No."

Raffaele stopped.

"You don't even know what I'm doing."

"You're kneeling."

"I was planning to."

"We're already married."

"I'm aware."

"Raffaele."

"Can I finish?"

She covered her mouth.

He lowered himself onto one knee.

The first wedding had been forced by a dead man's will.

No choice.

No courtship.

No love.

This would be different.

Raffaele opened a small box.

Inside was not an enormous diamond.

Sera hated enormous diamonds.

It was an antique sapphire ring that had belonged to her mother.

Sera stopped breathing.

"How?"

"Your father kept it."

Tears filled her eyes.

"Lorenzo found it among his belongings."

Raffaele took her hand.

"The first time I married you, I did it because I thought I had no choice."

Sera laughed through tears.

"You were charming."

"I was an idiot."

"Correct."

"I thought you were a condition standing between me and everything I wanted."

His expression softened.

"Then you became everything I wanted."

Sera cried harder.

"So I'm asking properly."

He held up the ring.

"Sera Conti Ferrara, when the contract ends, will you marry me again?"

She stared at him.

Then glanced toward her father's grave.

"You asked him first?"

Raffaele looked almost embarrassed.

"Yes."

"What did he say?"

"Nothing. He's difficult to negotiate with."

She laughed.

Then she dropped to her knees in front of him.

"Yes."

He exhaled.

"You made me wait."

"Seven seconds."

"Longest seven seconds of my life."

She kissed him.

But happiness did not erase consequences.

Two months before the original three-year marriage term expired, federal prosecutors approached them.

Vault Seven had implicated judges, executives, police officers, and organized-crime figures across three states.

Sera and Raffaele had surrendered evidence voluntarily.

Now prosecutors wanted testimony.

Raffaele agreed.

Lorenzo warned him.

"You'll make enemies."

"I already have enemies."

"You'll make new ones."

Raffaele looked toward Sera through the office glass.

She was arguing with three executives simultaneously and winning.

"I have something I didn't have before."

"What?"

"A reason to survive them."

The testimony lasted seventeen days.

Luca accepted a plea agreement and received decades in federal prison.

Alessandra faced conspiracy, attempted murder, financial crimes, and obstruction charges.

She refused to look at Raffaele during sentencing.

He watched anyway.

Not with hatred.

Not anymore.

Just closure.

When they exited the courthouse, reporters surrounded them.

Sera took his hand.

"Ready?"

"No."

"Good."

They walked out together.

On the final night of their contractual marriage, Sera found Raffaele in the library.

The restored room looked almost identical to Domenico's original.

Except one thing.

The seventh star remained missing from the ceiling.

Sera had refused to repaint it.

Some scars deserved to remain visible.

Raffaele poured two glasses of wine.

"Midnight in four minutes."

Sera took one.

"Then you're almost free."

"Terrifying."

"You could run."

"Where?"

"Somewhere without me."

Raffaele considered.

"Sounds awful."

She smiled.

At 11:59, they stood beneath the ceiling where Vault Seven had once been hidden.

Sera watched the clock.

"Ten seconds."

Raffaele took her hand.

"Nine."

"You're counting?"

"Eight."

"Sera."

"Seven."

He pulled her closer.

"Six."

"Five."

She smiled.

"Four."

He kissed her.

The clock struck midnight.

The three-year condition ended.

Their marriage could legally dissolve.

Raffaele looked into her eyes.

"Well?"

Sera pretended to consider.

"You're still irritating."

"So are you."

"Arrogant."

"Occasionally."

"Controlling."

"Improving."

She touched his face.

"But I think I'll keep you."

Raffaele smiled.

Then the library door opened.

Lorenzo stood there holding an envelope.

His expression was strange.

"Sera."

She turned.

"What?"

"This arrived today."

The handwriting on the envelope belonged to Domenico.

Sera and Raffaele exchanged a look.

Domenico had been dead for three years.

She opened it.

Inside was a single card.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU BOTH CHOSE TO STAY.

GOOD.

NOW YOU ARE READY FOR THE LAST THING I LEFT YOU.

Sera stared at Raffaele.

"What last thing?"

May you like

Lorenzo slowly smiled.

"You're going to want to sit down."
