Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN IN BLACK

Alessandra Ferrara arrived in New York wearing black.

She walked into the family estate as though she had never left.

Elegant.

Silver-haired.

Untouchable.

Raffaele met her in the drawing room.

Sera remained beside him.

Alessandra looked her over.

"So."

One word.

Sera understood immediately.

This woman had perfected the art of making people feel inadequate without technically insulting them.

"So," Sera replied.

Alessandra's eyes sharpened.

"You've changed my son."

Raffaele said, "Why did you pay Luca?"

His mother removed her gloves.

"No greeting?"

"Why?"

"Because Domenico was destroying our family."

"He was legitimizing it."

"He was weakening it."

Raffaele placed photographs from Vault Seven on the table.

"And killing Antonio Conti strengthened us?"

Alessandra's composure cracked.

Only slightly.

Sera saw it.

"You murdered my father."

"I didn't pull the trigger."

"You paid the man who did."

"Your father knew too much."

Sera stepped forward.

Raffaele caught her hand.

Not to restrain.

To remind her she wasn't alone.

Alessandra noticed.

Her expression changed.

"You're in love with her."

Raffaele's jaw tightened.

Sera looked at him.

Again.

The question.

Again he didn't answer.

Alessandra smiled sadly.

"Then Domenico won."

"What does that mean?" Sera asked.

"Domenico never cared about a marriage."

Alessandra sat.

"He cared about succession."

Raffaele stared.

"The will."

"Was a test."

She looked at Sera.

"Domenico believed Raffaele had inherited too much of Vittorio. Pride. Control. Suspicion. He thought power without someone capable of challenging him would eventually turn him into his father."

Sera looked at Raffaele.

"And me?"

Alessandra laughed softly.

"You were never the condition."

Raffaele frowned.

"What?"

"The original will is in Geneva."

Silence.

"Domenico changed it three months before he died."

"Why?"

"Because Sera discovered the Naples transfers."

Raffaele turned toward her.

"You knew?"

Sera looked genuinely surprised.

"No."

Alessandra continued.

"Domenico realized she had identified Luca's theft before his own advisers had. So he changed the succession."

She smiled.

"Raffaele inherited the empire."

Then looked at Sera.

"But you inherited the controlling shares."

The room went completely silent.

Sera whispered, "What?"

"Fifty-one percent."

Raffaele stared at his wife.

Alessandra enjoyed every second.

"The marriage never gave Raffaele control."

She stood.

"It gave you control together."

Lorenzo verified it.

The hidden corporate trust named Sera Conti as controlling shareholder.

Domenico had concealed it because announcing it before the wedding would have made Sera a target.

Now she was one anyway.

Raffaele stood at the library window after midnight.

Sera entered.

"You've been avoiding me."

"No."

"You're standing in a dark room alone."

"I do that recreationally."

She came closer.

"Are you angry?"

"That you own my company?"

"Our company."

His eyes moved to hers.

"That sounded disturbingly married."

"We are disturbingly married."

Silence.

Then she asked, "Why didn't you answer?"

He knew what she meant.

"Luca."

"Yes."

Raffaele turned toward her fully.

"Because saying it while someone had a gun pointed at you seemed inadequate."

Her breath caught.

He stepped closer.

"And saying it because my mother used it as a weapon seemed worse."

"Saying what?"

He stopped inches away.

"You're going to make me work for this?"

"Absolutely."

His hand rose to her cheek.

"Sera."

Her eyes softened.

"I spent years walking past you."

"I noticed."

"I spent weeks telling myself I was only protecting you because of the arrangement."

"I noticed that too."

"And then someone aimed a rifle at you in Naples, and I understood something."

"What?"

"I would have taken the bullet even if there were no will."

She stopped breathing.

"No company."

His thumb moved against her cheek.

"No inheritance."

He leaned closer.

"No three-year contract."

Her voice was barely audible.

"Raffaele..."

"I love you."

Sera closed her eyes.

He kissed her.

Slowly.

Nothing like the controlled man she knew.

There was hesitation in it.

Almost vulnerability.

Sera's hands moved against his chest.

When they separated, Raffaele rested his forehead against hers.

"You didn't answer."

She smiled.

"I was enjoying making you nervous."

"I don't get nervous."

"Your heartbeat disagrees."

Then she kissed him again.

A phone rang.

Raffaele ignored it.

It rang again.

Sera laughed against his mouth.

"You should answer."

"I disagree."

Third ring.

Raffaele cursed and picked up.

His expression changed immediately.

"What?"

Sera watched his face become cold.

He lowered the phone.

"Luca escaped police custody."

"How?"

"My mother's attorney arranged the transfer."

Sera turned.

"Where's Alessandra?"

Raffaele already knew.

Gone.

On the table where she had been sitting was a single envelope.

Inside was a photograph of the Ferrara estate.

And beneath it:

MIDNIGHT TOMORROW.
