Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE ADRIAN NEVER GAVE HER

Adrian remembered.
"The blue house."
Marcus looked at him.
"What blue house?"
"Gloucester."
Adrian was already moving.
Twenty minutes later, three vehicles headed north.
Not Adrian's usual security team.
Men Marcus trusted personally.
Adrian had ordered Owen kept unaware.
But as Boston disappeared behind them, one thought refused to leave him.
Claire had remembered the house.
He remembered why he bought it.
Their fifth anniversary.
She had been laughing in the passenger seat when they passed the faded colonial overlooking the Atlantic.
"If I ever disappear," she'd said, "that's where I'll go."
Adrian bought it the next week.
He planned to restore it for her.
Then work became complicated.
Months became years.
He never told her.
Another promise trapped in tomorrow.
At 2:13 a.m., they reached the property.
Dark.
Empty.
Adrian entered first.
Dust covered the floors.
No Claire.
Marcus found fresh tire tracks behind the house.
"They were here."
Adrian saw a broken chair.
A syringe.
Blood.
His world narrowed.
"Claire?"
"No idea whose."
Then Marcus found a button.
Cream-colored.
Adrian recognized Claire's coat.
He closed his fist around it.
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
Weapons rose.
Vanessa Reed emerged from the darkness.
Her face was bruised.
"Don't shoot."
Adrian crossed the room.
"Where is Claire?"
"Owen moved her."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
Adrian grabbed Vanessa's shoulders.
"Think."
"They separated us after the phone call."
"Is she hurt?"
"No. She was okay when I saw her."
Adrian released her.
"Why did you help her leave?"
Vanessa stared at him.
"Because she asked."
"You should have called me."
"She spent years calling you, Adrian."
That silenced him.
Vanessa's eyes filled with anger.
"Maybe not literally. But every dinner she ate alone was a call. Every time she asked whether you'd be home and you said 'soon' was a call."
"This isn't the time."
"It's exactly the time, because you still think someone stole your wife tonight."
Vanessa stepped closer.
"She left months ago. Tonight was just when you noticed."
Adrian looked away.
Marcus found a laptop hidden beneath a cabinet.
"Got something."
Security footage.
A vehicle leaving forty minutes earlier.
Owen was visible.
Claire beside him.
She was walking under her own power.
Adrian exhaled.
Then another man appeared.
Vanessa froze.
"No."
Adrian looked at her.
"Who?"
"My brother."
"Elliot?"
Vanessa nodded.
"You told me he disappeared."
"He did."
Onscreen, Elliot Reed opened the vehicle door for Claire.
Alive.
Working with Owen.
Vanessa sat down heavily.
Adrian understood.
Owen's operation was larger than betrayal.
It was personal.
His phone rang.
Owen.
Adrian answered.
"Where is she?"
"Straight to business."
"Where?"
"Your wife is perfectly safe."
"If you hurt her—"
"You'll what? Kill me?"
Owen laughed.
"You trained me, Adrian."
Adrian's voice lowered.
"No. I employed you."
The distinction silenced Owen briefly.
Then he said, "Pier 19. Four a.m. Come alone."
The call ended.
Marcus immediately shook his head.
"No."
Adrian checked his watch.
3:01.
"Prepare the car."
"That's a trap."
"Obviously."
"Then don't walk into it."
"My wife is there."
"And your child."
Adrian stared at him.
Marcus continued quietly.
"Which means you don't get to behave like a man with nothing to lose."
For years, Adrian had rewarded obedience.
Tonight everyone seemed determined to tell him the truth.
Perhaps that was what happened when fear stopped working.
Vanessa approached.
"Owen doesn't just need the shipping codes. He needs you."
"For what?"
"Your biometric authorization."
Adrian understood.
A secured warehouse beneath Pier 19 contained records connecting dozens of powerful people to illicit shipments.
He had been collecting them to dismantle the network without starting a war.
Owen wanted them erased.
Vanessa looked at the screen.
"If you give him access, he destroys the evidence."
"And Claire?"
"He'll kill both of you."
Marcus said, "Police."
Adrian shook his head.
"Half the names on those records have friends in law enforcement."
"Then federal authorities."
Vanessa looked at him.
"I know someone."
Adrian studied her.
"Who?"
"My brother's former contact."
"Your brother is standing beside Owen."
"Which means either he betrayed us..."
Vanessa looked at the frozen image.
"...or he's been pretending."
At 3:26 a.m., Adrian received another message.
A live photograph.
Claire sat in a chair.
Her hands were free.
Her face was pale but defiant.
On the wall behind her was a clock.
3:25.
Underneath:
COME ALONE OR SHE LEAVES BOSTON IN A BODY BAG.
Adrian stared at the image.
Then something caught his eye.
Claire's right hand rested against her stomach.
Two fingers extended.
Then four.
Then one.
It looked accidental.
It wasn't.
Claire had once designed a warehouse renovation at Pier 19.
Section 241.
A secondary loading tunnel.
Adrian almost smiled.
His wife was giving him the entrance.
He looked at Marcus.
"Call everyone you trust."
Then at Vanessa.
"Call your federal contact."
May you like
He slipped Claire's coat button into his pocket.
"And this time, nobody makes a decision for Claire except Claire."
