Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN IN THE BASEMENT

Claire had made one mistake.
She had believed Vanessa.
The Range Rover had appeared exactly where Vanessa promised.
Claire remembered standing beside her Mercedes, suitcase in hand, freezing wind cutting through her coat.
Vanessa stepped out.
"Get in. Adrian's men are watching your apartment."
Claire hesitated.
"How do you know about the apartment?"
Vanessa's expression tightened.
"Because someone inside Adrian's organization knows you've been preparing to leave."
That had been enough.
Claire got in.
Twenty minutes later, she smelled something sweet from the ventilation system.
Then darkness.
Now she woke on a narrow cot beneath a bare lightbulb.
Her first thought was the baby.
Her hand flew to her stomach.
No pain.
No blood.
She breathed again.
A door opened.
Vanessa entered.
Claire backed against the wall.
"You drugged me."
"I didn't."
"You were driving."
"I wasn't driving."
Claire remembered.
There had been a partition between them and the driver.
Vanessa sat opposite her.
"I was taken too."
Claire stared.
Vanessa's wrists were bruised.
"What is happening?"
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Owen Price."
The name meant little to Claire beyond Adrian's security chief.
"Why?"
"Because Adrian is trying to dismantle something he helped build."
Claire laughed bitterly.
"That sounds exactly like Adrian. Tell everyone nothing, then expect them to trust him."
Vanessa looked at her carefully.
"You think I'm sleeping with your husband."
Claire's face hardened.
"I saw you kissing him."
"Yes."
At least she did not deny it.
Vanessa leaned forward.
"That kiss happened once."
"How comforting."
"He pushed me away."
Claire looked at her.
Vanessa continued.
"I had been drinking. My brother had disappeared. Adrian had spent weeks helping me find him. I confused gratitude with something else."
"The photograph showed his hand around your waist."
"Because I nearly fell when he pushed me back."
Claire wanted not to believe her.
Four months of pain demanded that Vanessa be lying.
"Hotel receipts?"
"Meetings."
"The handwritten note?"
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"What did it say?"
Claire remembered every word.
If things were different, maybe we wouldn't have to hide. — V
Vanessa's face changed.
"That wasn't romantic."
"Then what was it?"
"A warning."
She looked toward the door.
"My brother discovered Owen was moving weapons through Cole Logistics under Adrian's name."
Claire went cold.
"Adrian knew?"
"No. Adrian discovered irregularities last winter. He asked me to audit everything quietly."
"And you met secretly."
"Because Owen controls security."
Claire looked away.
All those nights.
All those canceled dinners.
Maybe Adrian had not been having an affair.
It should have brought relief.
Instead, anger rose hotter.
Even if he had never betrayed her body, he had still shut her outside his life until suspicion had become easier than trust.
"Why didn't Adrian tell me?"
"Because Adrian thinks protecting people means making decisions for them."
Claire gave a humorless smile.
"That sounds more believable."
Footsteps approached.
Vanessa moved closer.
"If Owen realizes Adrian knows—"
The door opened.
Owen entered.
Claire had seen him at Christmas dinners.
At charity events.
Standing behind Adrian with quiet professionalism.
Tonight his smile looked different.
"Mrs. Cole."
Claire stood.
"Let us go."
Owen ignored her.
He looked at Vanessa.
"You always were bad at following instructions."
"What do you want?"
"Adrian's shipping access."
Claire frowned.
Owen turned to her.
"Your husband has spent the last year quietly closing routes that made powerful people very rich."
"So this is about money?"
"It's always about money."
Owen placed a phone on the table.
"You'll call Adrian."
Claire stared at it.
"And say what?"
"That you're safe. That you left voluntarily. That you want him to sign the separation agreement immediately."
Claire laughed.
"You kidnapped me so he'll give me a divorce?"
"Not quite."
Owen leaned down.
"The separation transfers several jointly controlled properties temporarily into legal review. One of those properties contains the server authorization I need."
Vanessa's face drained.
"You planned this months ago."
Owen smiled.
"Finally."
Claire understood.
Her lawyer.
Her apartment.
Her private plans.
Someone had been watching all of it.
"You wanted me to leave Adrian."
"I needed you angry enough to do it."
Claire looked at Vanessa.
"The photographs."
Vanessa whispered, "Owen."
Owen's smile widened.
Claire's stomach dropped.
The images had not been discovered by accident.
They had been planted.
Her marriage had been deliberately cracked open.
But Owen had not created everything.
He had not made Adrian miss dinners.
He had not made him lie.
He had simply found the fractures.
Then widened them.
Owen pushed the phone toward her.
"Call him."
"No."
He stared at her stomach.
Claire instinctively covered it.
Owen noticed.
"Congratulations, by the way."
Her blood turned cold.
Vanessa stood.
"Don't."
Owen's eyes remained on Claire.
"Nine weeks, isn't it?"
Claire's fear became something sharper.
"You stay away from my child."
"Then make the call."
Claire picked up the phone.
Owen relaxed.
She dialed.
Adrian answered before the first ring finished.
"Claire?"
Her throat tightened.
Hearing his voice nearly broke her.
Owen watched.
Claire forced herself to breathe.
"I'm safe."
"Where are you?"
"I left voluntarily."
A pause.
Then Adrian said softly, "Claire, listen to me."
She closed her eyes.
"I want you to sign the papers."
"Are you alone?"
"Yes."
Owen smiled.
Adrian went silent.
Claire knew her husband.
Silence meant he had noticed something.
"Do you remember Nantucket?" Adrian asked.
Claire frowned.
They had never been to Nantucket together.
"No."
"Neither do I."
Owen's smile disappeared.
Adrian continued.
"So whoever is listening should know my wife would never answer that question incorrectly."
Owen lunged for the phone.
Claire screamed one sentence before he ripped it away.
"THE BLUE HOUSE!"
Owen struck the phone against the wall.
It shattered.
He grabbed Claire's arm.
"What does that mean?"
Claire said nothing.
But three years earlier, while driving through Gloucester, she and Adrian had passed an abandoned blue colonial house.
Claire had joked that it looked like the perfect place to hide from the world.
Adrian had bought it secretly six months later.
Nobody knew.
May you like
Nobody except them.
And as Owen dragged Claire toward the door, she prayed Adrian remembered.
