Chapter 9 - The Birthday He Almost MissedPaige's second birthday was approaching.

Claire wanted something simple.
Cake.
Balloons.
Family.
Nothing extravagant.
Owen wanted dinosaurs.
Lily wanted butterflies.
Paige wanted whatever everyone else was holding.
Grant promised he would come.
The night before the party, Claire received a message.
I won't miss it. I promise.
She smiled.
The next morning, the house filled with laughter.
Owen decorated the living room.
Lily hung paper butterflies.
Paige crawled after balloons.
Claire carried a tray of cupcakes.
Then the doorbell rang.
Grant stood outside.
He held a wrapped gift.
“I made it.”
Owen ran to him.
“I knew you would!”
Grant hugged him.
Lily followed.
Claire watched.
Then Grant handed her the gift.
“For Paige.”
“Thank you.”
She opened it later.
Inside was a children's book.
On the first page, Grant had written:
For Paige — May you always grow up knowing you are loved.
Claire stared at the words.
Something inside her softened.
Not because of the gift.
Because of what it represented.
Grant had finally understood what mattered.
Not the mansion.
Not money.
Not control.
Love.
That afternoon, they took photographs.
Claire stood with Paige.
Grant stood beside them.
Owen and Lily stood in front.
For the first time in years, there was no performance.
No pretending.
No carefully arranged image.
Just a family that had survived something difficult.
When the candles were lit, everyone sang.
Paige stared at the flames.
Then clapped.
Lily laughed.
Owen shouted:
“Make a wish!”
Claire smiled.
Paige blew as hard as she could.
The candles flickered.
Everyone cheered.
Later, Claire stepped outside.
Grant followed.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
He leaned against the porch railing.
“I used to think that night at the mansion was the worst night of my life.”
Claire looked at him.
“And now?”
“Now I think it was the night everything finally became honest.”
Claire nodded.
He looked at her.
“I know we won't go back.”
“No.”
“I don't want to pressure you.”
“Thank you.”
“I just want you to know that I'm grateful.”
“For what?”
“For leaving.”
Claire frowned.
He smiled sadly.
“If you had stayed, I might never have realized what I'd become.”
Claire looked toward the window.
Inside, Owen was chasing Lily around the couch.
Paige was laughing.
“You had to realize it yourself,” Claire said.
“I know.”
He nodded.
“I finally did.”
They stood in silence.
Then Grant said:
“Happy birthday, Paige.”
Claire smiled.
“Happy birthday.”
The door opened.
Owen shouted:
“Mom! Dad! Come inside!”
They looked at each other.
Claire laughed.
“Duty calls.”
Grant smiled.
“Always.”
They went inside.
Not as husband and wife.
May you like
Not pretending.
Just two parents who had finally learned how to put their children first.
