Chapter 4 - The Children Hear EverythingThe apartment was smaller than the mansion.

Much smaller.
There was no sweeping staircase.
No chandelier.
No formal dining room.
But there was something Claire had not realized she had been missing.
Silence.
Not the frightening silence of waiting for Grant's mood.
Real silence.
Owen could play with his cars without asking permission.
Lily could spill cereal without hearing a lecture about stains.
Claire could sit on the couch at night without wondering whether Grant would come home angry.
The children began changing within days.
Owen laughed more.
Lily slept better.
Claire noticed everything.
One evening, Owen sat beside her.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Are we poor now?”
Claire's heart tightened.
“Why would you think that?”
“Daddy said you don't have money.”
Claire took a breath.
“We have enough.”
“For toys?”
Claire smiled.
“For groceries, school, medicine, and a few toys.”
Owen thought about that.
“Do we still have a family?”
Claire's eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“Even without Daddy?”
Claire looked at him.
“We're still a family.”
Owen nodded.
Then he leaned against her.
That night, Claire sat beside the children's beds long after they fell asleep.
She touched Owen's hair.
Then Lily's.
And wondered what kind of woman she would have become if she had stayed.
The answer frightened her.
A woman who smiled less.
A woman who apologized constantly.
A woman who taught her daughter that love meant endurance.
She couldn't allow that.
Three days later, the children had their first supervised visit with Grant.
Claire hated the arrangement.
But she understood that Owen and Lily loved their father.
Their love was not something she wanted to punish.
Grant arrived on time.
He brought gifts.
Owen ran to him.
“Daddy!”
Grant hugged him tightly.
Lily followed.
Claire watched from a distance.
For a moment, she remembered why she had loved him.
That was the hardest part.
Grant could be kind.
He could be funny.
He could make the children laugh.
And yet he had still built a life around controlling her.
Both things could be true.
After the visit, Owen asked Claire something unexpected.
“Daddy said we might go back home.”
Claire knelt.
“What did you say?”
“I said I wanted you too.”
Claire hugged him.
“That's enough.”
That night, Grant sent a message.
The children need their home.
Claire stared at it.
She typed:
They need safety.
Then she put down the phone.
The legal process moved quickly.
Natalie filed additional documents.
Financial experts reviewed Grant's business records.
The investigation expanded.
Grant's company began losing clients.
Tessa disappeared from social media.
Then one morning, Grant's mother called.
Claire almost didn't answer.
“Hello?”
Her voice sounded older than before.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
“I owe you an apology.”
Claire said nothing.
“I should have stopped him.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“You knew?”
“I knew he was seeing Tessa.”
The words hurt.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I thought it was temporary.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“An affair was temporary?”
His mother began crying.
“I was afraid.”
Claire softened slightly.
“Of him?”
“Yes.”
That answer surprised her.
“He controls everyone,” the older woman whispered. “He has for years.”
Claire looked down.
“I thought it was only me.”
“No.”
A long silence followed.
Then Grant's mother said:
“I found something.”
“What?”
“A box in his office.”
Claire's heart beat faster.
“What kind of box?”
“Documents.”
“What documents?”
“I don't know.”
“Where is it?”
“He moved it after you left.”
“Where?”
His mother hesitated.
“I think he gave it to Tessa.”
Claire felt a cold wave move through her.
Tessa.
The woman Grant had brought into their home.
The woman he had believed would replace Claire.
The woman who might now possess documents Grant desperately wanted hidden.
That afternoon, Tessa called.
Her voice trembled.
“I need to see you.”
Claire almost refused.
Then Tessa said:
“It’s about Grant.”
Claire agreed.
They met at a quiet park.
Tessa looked nothing like the confident woman from the dining room.
Her eyes were tired.
“I didn't know.”
Claire folded her arms.
“Didn't know what?”
“That he was hiding money.”
Claire studied her.
“You knew he was married.”
Tessa looked down.
“Yes.”
“That was enough.”
“I know.”
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Tessa opened her purse.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this in the guest suite.”
Claire took it.
Inside was a copy of an agreement between Grant and one of his business partners.
The date was two weeks before Grant announced Tessa was moving in.
Claire stared.
“What am I looking at?”
Tessa swallowed.
“An agreement that transferred ownership of several properties.”
Claire looked up.
“To whom?”
Tessa's voice dropped.
“To me.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“Grant told me they were gifts.”
Claire read the document again.
“He transferred assets to you?”
“I didn't know they were connected to his company.”
Claire stared at the papers.
Suddenly the pieces began fitting together.
Tessa had not simply been the mistress.
Grant had been using her as part of a financial plan.
Claire looked at her.
“Why are you giving me this?”
Tessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I finally realized I wasn't moving into your home.”
May you like
She swallowed.
“I was being moved into his trap.”
